Six-Decade-Old Lynching Case Is Investigated
July 3rd, 2008Two Black sharecropper couples died in a notoriously gruesome race murder
Federal and state investigators and lawmakers are hoping that, after 62 years, they can bring to justice the dozen or so men who riddled four Black sharecroppers with bullets and cut the unborn baby from one of the victims in the last recorded mass lynching in America. It was July 26, 1945 when a mob, armed with shotguns, rifles and machine guns, took the foursome to the Moore’s Ford Bridge and shot them hundreds of times. One of the men had been accused of killing a White man two weeks earlier. A Klansman bootlegger bailed the suspect out of jail, and drove him, his wife, her brother and her brother’s wife to the bridge, where they were massacred. This week, officials from the FBI and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation retrieved boxes of evidence from a home in a rural Georgia community of Walton County. “The FBI and GBI had gotten some information that we couldn’t ignore with respect to this case,” GBI spokesman John Bankhead told CNN. For the past several years, Tyrone Brooks, a member of the Georgia state House, has been pressing for justice in this 1946 case. “We just hope and pray they can bring some of these suspects to the bar of justice before they die, because they’re all getting up in age,” said Brooks, the president of the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials. At the national level, Rep. John Lewis, who represents Georgia in the U.S. House, sponsored a bill that provides $10 million a year over the next decade to investigate lynch cases from the ‘50s and ‘60s. Although a lone Oklahoma senator, Tom Coburn, has been blocking the legislation – he almost never supports measures that require federal dollars – but his recently indicated that he might be willing to allow the legislation to go through.
Iam pretty sure that the people who have done this have cursed lives, In the bible it says that the Lord will punish the wicked to the third and fourth generation. But hey it would be extra special if they were caught and spent the rest of their lives in jail.
THIS IS AMERICA PEOPLE. IF A BLACK PERSON COMMITS A CRIME AGAINST A WHITE PERSON, “JUSTICE” IS ALWAYS SWIFT. WHEN WHITES COMMITS CRIMES AGAINST BLACKS OR ANY MINORITY, YOU’D BE LUCKY TO SEE JUSTICE AT ALL. INTIMIDATION IS THE WAY THEY RUN YOUR LIFE. WHILE DAVID DUKE RAN FOR OFFICE IN LOUISIANA, I SHOOK HIS HAND. IT SHOCKED HIM AND HIS BODYGUARDS. WHEN ASKED WHY I DID IT, I SAID THAT THEY DIDN’T SCARE ME. I DON’T INTIMIDATE EASY. MY FOREFATHERS PAID THE UNFAIR DEBT FOR ME AND I’M NOT PAYING IT ANYMORE. FOR THIS CASE, THE MEDIA WILL PROBABLY SWEEP THIS UNDER THE RUG OR FIND A BETTER STORY TO PASTE OVER IT.
THIS IS PRECISELY THE HISTORY THAT BLOGGERS LIKE UMLAW WANT US TO FORGET AND MOVE ON!!! THEY WANT US TO SWALLOW IT AND ACT LIKE IT DID NOT HAPPEN. THIS IS JUST ONE STORY!!!THERE ARE MANY,MANY, MANY OTHER INJUSTICES DONE TO BLACKS THAT ARE NOT EVEN REPORTED BECAUSE THE LAW (WHITE) WERE THE CULPRITS AND BLACK LIFE WAS OF ZERO VALUE!!! 62 YEARS AFTER THE MASACRE AND NOW THEY HAVE SOME EVIDENCE…WERE THE POLICE THAT INCOMPETENT BACK THEN OR JUST THAT RACIST!!!!!!! LYNCHING WAS A REGULAR OCCURRENCE BACK THEN BUT NOW THEY HAVE LESS OBVIOUS WAYS TO HURT US…
Wow! how many years after the fact. Are the people who hanged these to even still alive? and if so what will be there punishment. How many times have this happen and no one was punished. I only hope with this case being reopened something good comes out of it, for any family members that are left. Jeff Lewis Detroit.
Oklahoma senator, Tom Coburn….Ok..this Senator better get with it!!…justice must be served for the black families that this horrific crime happened to. I could hardly get through reading this article. How in the devil can there be so much hatred in this world against an innocent people. Lord!!! ..how much more can we endure and how much have we endured at this point. I can’t see for the life of me why is this senator Tom Coburn holding up legislation to prevent justice from being served in this case..though he say he might be willing to allow it to go through. To me this is just as any other cold case…and there’s no of statue of limitations on murder. I feel this is more than MURDER…FOR IT IS SO NASTY …VENDICTIVE AND FULL OF EVIL..HATREAD…JUST TOO MUCH.
