Sports: Serena Williams Memoirs To Be Published In 2009; NBA’s Josh Howard Disses ‘Star Spangled Banner’
September 17th, 2008Serena Williams memoirs to be published in 2009. Grand Central Publishing will release the currently untitled life story of tennis phenom Serena Williams in 2009. A reported $1.3 million deal gave Grand Central the rights to Williams’ memoirs after a bidding war. A company spokesperson says: “Serena Williams is one of the world’s most remarkable athletes. We’ve watched her rise to number one, despite physical and emotional setbacks, and her hard work and determination have inspired legions of fans, young and old. Serena will give her memoir a strong motivational slant.” Williams recently won an Olympic gold medal and the women’s U.S. Open title.
NBA’s Josh Howard disses “Star Spangled Banner.” Josh Howard’s best move yet may be off the basketball court – when he decides to hire a new publicist. Having admitted to smoking weed, getting arrested for driving nearly 100 in a 55 mile-per-hour zone and throwing a party the night before a playoff game, the Dallas player recently made an announcement: He doesn’t like the national anthem. Howard is caught on YouTube at Allen Iverson’s recent celebrity flag football game telling the camera: “The Star Spangled Banner’s going on right now. I don’t celebrate that sh**. I’m Black.” He mutters something about Sen. Barack Obama before the camera is aimed a different way. Not that Howard isn’t entitled to free speech, but soldiers in Iraq and a looming presidential election might signal less than ideal timing on this one.

Now we know why J. Howard wasn’t picked to play on the USA Olympic Team! This dude just loves controversy. Now, I don’t recognize the Pledge of Allegiance or The Star Spangled Banner either because I know what this country has done and continues to do to people of color. The difference is I’m not a multi million dolar athelete who is always in the public eye. He has to realize that he can’t say things like that without consequence, especially without fully explaining the reason he said it. You can’t just say “I’m Black” and leave it at that. The last NBA player that did that, Chris Jackson, got blackballed from the league. He must be smokin’ some government grown G-13 because he definitely does not think before he speaks.
THE NBA STAR HAS POINT LOL, ATLEAST HE KNOWS WERE HIS ANCESTORS COME FROM… … … i’M GOING TO STOP DOING IT MYSELF… … …LMFAO
What about prayer in Public School now that’s a joke.
Yes, I’m African American! Yes, I know about slavery!Yes,I know my history and even traveled to Africa.Yes, I say the Plaedge of Allegiance and sing the National Anthem.Just because you’re Black doesn’t mean you should hate your country!I love my country! We have alot of work to do in our own communities to stop black on Black violence,Drive by shootings must stop!We can’t blame the white man for everything!Lets train our kids to love one another!Lets not hate our country because we’re black! It’s our country too!Thank you
SERENA way to go my Sistah, keep living your legacy and using the gift that the Lord blessed you with. YOU ARE INDEED THE GREATEST female tennis player of our time!!!
Josh Howard try living in Iraq, Africa, Cuba, Haiti for a while or just move there and see how much you like those countries. You need a reality check Brotha!!
People should not lose a career because they don’t salute the flag and if that is the reason he should sue. you cant force people to feel a certain way about america when this is not the america we live in. People dont have to believe in all the american dream stuff if that hasn’t been their life and we dont have to move to another country to know how fortunate we are to live in a country where we dont have to say something we dont believe in leave these people alone because they are no less american than anyone, but there are 2 americas one is fair a just for everyone, and the other is black america where fair a just doesn’t exist…..
Leave her alone. She needs true love and supprt now. I saw her profile on a famous WEALTHY&SEXY dating site ” http://BillionaireRomance.com” yesterday. It seems she is dating online now.
If these guys don’t want to sing, pledge or put there hands on there hearts, then they don’t have to .Chris Jackson be in the NBA because of what he belives and J. Howard may not have been chosen for the olympic games but that is there chose,so the same song and anthem that gives you these right to choose and free speech just took those human rights away from these two black men.The Constitution was not for black people,if I am not mistakeing the Constitution said that we were like 3/5th human. An even though we act like we are not human at times and especially to our own people we need to get it together or no one will be able to help us,and that includes Obama.By the way I don’t sing or pledge and never will.
It’s amazing how quickly we become outraged over someone’s not acknowledging a symbol but show no outrage over the facts of this country: 11% black unemployment ,a CRUMBLING economy,a horribly broken healthcare system, a subprime crisis that disproportionately affected Blacks and Hispanics, and please let’s not forget those troops we’re supposed to support until they return home to vermin infested healthcare facilities and broken promises. I believe in saving outrage for truly outrageous things.
Well said JFH, well said.
Are you serious, this is not even a issue, if you are black, a %~#~$$, african-american, house, field or back of the bus, multi-millionaire, rapping, 9 to 5, sell out, you have lost your mind if you are patriotic to a society, constitution, and establishment that does not want, open your eyes you blind fool. American is the only place I know if you are white and drunk and driving you will have a opportunity to shoot at police, even try to escape. If your black 50 bullets no questions ask. God Bless America!
I agree with dude that national anthem don’t and didn’t bring freedom to our people so why should we give a fu*k and about the soldiers over where ever killing up innocent people who are they protecting who are they fighting for the army is a place where dumb ass killers get paid to kill innocent people they haven’t won us anything but enemy’s ~$#* america cause this #%$@$ ain’t free
Yes, in a nation where a disproportionate amount of the violent crimes are committed by young Black men (most of the violent crimes occur in the inner-cities…what group resides in said area?), there is too much talk about unfairness from many in the Black community.
J.Howard is a multi-millionaire that gets in trouble b/c of his own mistakes (weed/speeding). He is living off of the money that our soldiers help him continue to make. They protect our freedom….and he dares to talk down on the symbol of our nation??
GO LIVE SOMEWHERE ELSE IF YOU DO NOT RESPECT/LOVE THE USA!!!
Everybody blaming eveything on someone else. Yes, there is the so called freedom of speech. You do not have to say the pledge or sing the anthem. But the comment by Tia is out of line. Many people join the military as a way to provide for there family and make a living. I joined the Navy to see the world and get paid to do it. I was fortunate not to go to first gulf war. I got out before the second. No one in their right mind jioned to go kill innocent people. So I guess then that all the people in jail came into this world to kill, rob, rap innocent people also. Just because you are in a bad environment that does not mean you have to be a product of that environment. If you hate America that much passport cost about $110. You can get on the first thing smoking to where you desire to be. When you get there say what you want to then tell them you have the right to say what you want.
Great comment 2notty4u. I appreciate your service to this country. People can get out if they want…there is nothing forcing them to stay in the greatest country in the world.
2notty4u, Great Job! This Josh Howard controversy will come and go and he will definitely suffer for his non-patriotic views, but my question is this: Why do we as black folk continue to be hypocrites about our love for this country? On the one hand we declare our unbridled disdain for it and its history towards us , while on the other hand , we enjoy all the benefits that no other country in the world allows us to experience. I don’t see anyone trying to break “out of America”; they’re all breaking into this country. Granted, with all its bad history, this is still the best country in the entire world to live in. I’m not suggesting that our nation is perfect, by any stretch of the imagination, but just the fact that we are able to blog on BET, tells me that we have grown as a nation. The biggest proof is Barack Obama’s nomination by the DNC as their presidential candidate. Progress! We must keep a hopeful eye on the future as we struggle to right the wrongs of the past. We must never forget, even with all of its flaws, and it has many, no other country in the world allows people like Josh Howard to grow up in poverty, receive a scholarship that affords him a decent education, which results in him becoming a multi-millionaire and then allows him to speak out disrespectfully against that very same country, because of the freedoms that that country possess, but the United States of America. We need to acknowledge the blessings we have before we focus so quickly on what we are missing. Being ungratefulness is not a characteristic which God looks favorably upon. When God brought the Israelites through the desert, and provided them with bread from heaven and water from rocks, all they did was complain about what was missing. Barack Obama understands gratefulness and that’s why he views this country slightly different than a lot of us and has the audacity to hope for a brighter future, rather than be resentful and despairing about the past.
