Sportscaster Apologizes To Tiger Woods For Lynching Reference

January 9th, 2008

Golf reporter takes back words about top competitor
Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman has apologized for joking that young golfers should tiger wooda“lynch Tiger Woods in a back alley.” Tilghman made the comments during last week’s telecast of the PGA Tour’s opening event. The quip was in reference to Woods’ dominant performances on the PGA Tour. Apparently unaware of the problems with using any form of the word “lynch,” considering that Black men were often killed this way by being hanged from trees, Tilghman expressed regret for the comment during a weekend telecast.

I agree this is a disgrace, and so very sad. But brothers and sisters, can someone tell me what does “being black” mean. Probably an island girl like me who chooses to send her child to a private school in downtown Boston, is trying to be white? Noooo. I am an Afro-centric sister, with deep Caribbean roots, who wants her child to have the best education possible. Luv

Really, these comments are ridculous. Do you even know the definition of lynch. It doesen’t mean hang black people. It means mob justice without due process. Haven’t you ever heard of outlaws being lynched in old west movies. People give words meaning. You choose to see it as racist. If you actually saw the broadcast, it was obvious that she making a joke about her friend Tiger, who, by the way, is more asian, indian, and white then black. Seriously stop with incescnet ranting about racism. Black people are not the only people on earth that have ever been put upon. Do you think your ancestors in Africa didn’t have slaves. For thousands of years Africans held Africans has slaves. It is not a white, black issue. It is a human being issue. Human beings sometimes do horrible things live slavery and discrimination, whites, blacks, and everything in between.

What we’ve been seeing for many years now is that no matter a sportscaster, politician, actor or celebrity, stick in a microphone in their face and they will surely make an ignorant comment. How this woman couldn’t know the negative connotation of lynching is anyone’s guess. The more insidious side of these comments is that once said, all the offender has to do is come back and apologize, and the supposedly makes things better. This allows many to make statements with impunity, get their feelings “out there” then just come back and apologize. Their feelings however are still…”out there.”

I have never understood how people can talk about us and them at the same time they are speaking against racism as if all whites are racist. It’s a terrible thing to call someone a racist who isn’t. If you think all whites are racist that is a prejudice of it’s own that creates barriers and you may miss out on getting to know some good people. As long as lifestyle choices are labeled as white or black it becomes a limitation as to what a person can do. I won’t miss out on good people or fun things just to please someone else that is who I am.

The announcer’s remark reminded me of a mixed metaphor. A group taking a person in a “back alley” should be beating the person up instead of lynching the unfortunate. I believe what she meant the only way the other pros could beat Tiger was to gang up on him physically. That they weren’t going to be able to defeat him on the golf course. It was actually a compliment to Tiger and an insult leveled at the ability of the other golfers. If anyone took offense, it should have been the nine or ten top golfers in the world who can’t seem to outscore Tiger or make the money he makes on tour.
I grew up with the “Western” in Movies and on TV. Lynching, to me, brings to mind a crowd, a rope and, usually, a white guy who is supposed to be guilty of some capital offense, in the eyes of the mob. Oh sure, you can make a big deal of racial connotations, but to me, lynching is not about race. It’s about mob violence and has almost always been depicted as a mistake.

Kelly Tilghman was born and bred in South Carolina. I’m sure she is quit familiar with the word lynching and its history. For those of you that think that such a word is no big deal, I ask that you to get the book:
Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography in America by James Allen, Leon F. Litwack, Hilton Als, Leon F. Litwack, Hilton Als

Synopsys:
These lynching photographs were often made into postcards and sold as souvenirs to the crowds in attendance. Historians have also detailed the carnival atmosphere and the social ritual of a lynching, which was often announced in advance and drew thousands of people from the surrounding area. Most disturbing is the sight of the white people, looking straight at the camera as if they had nothing to be ashamed of, often smiling.

For the white people that still don’t get it, let me clue you in. Let’s just say that your children and their children are brutalized, tortured, and burned to death for the next 100 years. Then, we all gather round the front porch, sip mint julip, and joke about how we miss roasted white piglets over the open fire!!!

First of all, I think, if everyone would think before they speak less drama would erupt, Especially if you are affliated with any type of media job. Pay close attention to your surroundings and process it throughly if you dont want to be apologizing for it later!

that comment just shows how stupid some people are and that the world that some of us live in wont never change and as a black woman i am not happy by the statement she made and it makes me feel like she can say what she wants and apologize later and its all good

janell Said on

I think that Tiger is a discrase to white and black people. For the fact that he let a white woman make a racial comment about him and act like it wasn’t pertaining to him. Also for the fact that he turned his back on us,his culture (black),and did’nt say anything or at least get her fired. Just accepted an apology just like a slave would. One inch of black in a white person is considered a black person. So wake up Tiger and be proud of being black. Black is beautiful, strong, and powerful.

Time for the boy to recongize! He is letting us down by not standing up and representing. Remember where he came from…those are some sound words right about now, you know! His old man sure as he** wouldn’t have stood by when this goes on. She intended to cause a riot and was hoping one of the other golfers would taker comments serious and do some harm. She should go to jail or do something to make her think a bit harder bout what she running her mouth about. Time to stand up, and make some change! This is an outrage, i’m going to boycott CNN. They are nothing but a bunch of racists. No more CNN!!!! Be proud to be black, strong, and beautiful Tiger if your raeding this!

It is said and done. What we need to do, is to try and comfort Tiger. We all make mistakes, just as long as she realized what she said was wrong and apologized to Tiger, hoping this will be a lesson to her and everyone with racism.

Wow! can’t express what a person would like to say, and futher more it wasn’t just men they lynched, it also was children and women. Thats way people of white color should really know they’re history of evil that was done by thee hands of their people a lot better than that, and understand way we as a people are still taunted and sensitive in these areas, that just all of the sudden can surffice at any whem now, especially since televionsion has become so excessable and the internet.
