Sports’Man’Ship: Young Keeps Promise to McNair’s Sons
September 18th, 2009
With much of the news this week focusing around celebrities and athletes involvement in controversial moments, we need to acknowledge an NFL athlete who stepped up to the plate to be there for two children going through a tough time.
Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young lived up to a promise he made to the sons of former NFL great Steve McNair “to be there for them,” as he accompanied the boys to their school’s annual Father/Son Breakfast.
According to Yahoo Sports, Young showed up to their school to participate in the breakfast bringing together fathers/grandfathers with the male students. Young also picked up the tab for the entire event.
Steve McNair was killed on July 4.
When asked why he went to the breakfast, Young said
“Those are my boys, I wouldn’t say it was to pay anyone back; it was just out of love. Steve would do it for me. He pretty much did it for me when I was growing up. I have a history with the boys and I want to do anything I can. I am their big brother.”
While nothing can replace losing a father, 11-year-old Trenton and 5-year-old Tyler had someone at the table for them. I’m hoping Young inspires other men to become involved with our youth any positive way they can.
Thanks for stepping up #10.

Why is someone always trying to hook up a “moment”…anyone (male or female) going to get rich websites, will get exactly what they are looking for…(ok). Back to the topic at hand…..great gesture from Young….ah, if only all men of color would act as such….Keep it real..
