Study: 90 Percent of Black Kids Will Use Food Stamps in Lifetime

A study published in the November issue of Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine says half of the nation’s children will be on food stamps at some period in their lives and that 90 percent of African-American children will utilize the program.

The estimate comes from an analysis of 30 years of national data, and it bolsters other recent evidence on the pervasiveness of youngsters at economic risk. It suggests that almost everyone knows a family who has received food stamps, or will in the future, said lead author Mark Rank, a sociologist at Washington University in St. Louis.
“Your neighbor may be using some of these programs but it’s not the kind of thing people want to talk about,” Rank said.
The analysis was released Monday in the November issue of Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. The authors say it’s a medical issue pediatricians need to be aware of because children on food stamps are at risk for malnutrition and other ills linked with poverty.
“This is a real danger sign that we as a society need to do a lot more to protect children,” Rank said.
Ninety percent is a remarkable number. I’m sure the report will be analyzed and debated.
This is so sad. All of the gains that the Black Community have made over years and yet 90% of our children would go hungrey with out food stamps.
The people who are running this”study” are white. Im sick of these racist research.

This isn’t about pride at this point. This stat, even if it’s half of the percentage stated, is extremely sad. While food stamps is a necessary entity, we have to get these children a better chance at being successful. It’s proven that a very high percentage of those born into poverty will relatively remain there when he/she is an adult.
@Fatima: when speaking about populations (on pub assistance) you have to discuss it in terms of proportion, or per capita. When two groups are of extremely different numbers, you have to find the average/ratio, and not compare them as face value.
