Shooting Leaves at Least 12 Dead; Up to 40 Taken Hostage in New York
April 3rd, 2009At least one person opened fire in a Binghamton, New York, building Friday morning, killing at least 12 or 13 people, according to Gov. David Patterson, and holding up to 40 more hostage. One gunman was also killed, according to law enforcement. “This is a horrible situation. There’s no available data on what’s going on there other than the fact that lives have been lost,” said Gov. Peterson, reports CNN. More than 12 were wounded in the gun fire, according to preliminary reports. The shooting took place at the American Civic Association, a place that assists immigrants, while people were taking a citizenship test, a source told the Associated Press. SWAT team sharpshooters are positioned outside of the building and the FBI plans to send in hostage negotiators. A nearby high school has been put on lockdown. Story developing.
