National: Tyson Hopes to Publish Tell-All Autobiography; FBI Cites Increase in Mortgage Scams

February 14th, 2009

Tyson hopes to publish tell-all autobiography. Mike Tyson, one of the most discussed, criticized and talked about boxers in history, plans to tell his own story in a book. The former heavyweight champ fell from grace after what many considered a questionable rape conviction and a title fight in which he bit Evander Holyfield’s ear. The New York-born brawler says he began penning the autobiography when he was serving time for the rape in Indiana. “Me and my cell mate would read to each other at night,” Tyson recalls. “One night I would read out loud to him, the next night he would read out loud to me. And we would do that back and forth until the book was completed.” Tyson’s other headlines outside of the ring have included media coverage about a stormy relationship with ex-wife and actress Robin Givens.

FBI cites increase in mortgage scams. America’s money trouble and damaged housing industry has led to an “exponential rise” in mortgage scams, says the FBI. The bureau reports more than 1,800 ongoing investigations into mortgage fraud, double the number from 2006. There are also a reported 530 ongoing corporate fraud investigations. “The increasing mortgage, corporate fraud and financial institution failure case inventory is straining the FBI’s limited white-collar crime resources,” Deputy Director John Pistole recently told a Washington Senate hearing. The Black community has been particularly susceptible to home foreclosures and fallout from the financial impact on housing. The FBI has re-assigned some investigators of terrorist crimes to its financial crime cases.

Entertainment: Oprah Falls Off Weight Control Program; Bobby Brown’s Book Will Be Released Today

December 10th, 2008

Oprah

Oprah falls off the weight control program. Oprah Winfrey has opened up about her recent weight gain. She admits to being embarrassed by her weight gain in an eight-page spread in the January issue of her O magazine, which has a coverline that reads: “How Did I Let This Happen Again?” Winfrey writes about how and why she has gained 40 pounds in four years, now reaching 200 pounds. “I’m mad at myself. I’m embarrassed,” she wrote in the article. “I didn’t just fall off the wagon. I let the wagon fall on me.” Of the causes of her weight gain, the media mogul says, “This past year, I took myself off of my own priority list. I wasn’t just low on the list; I wasn’t even on the list.”  Oprah has thyroid conditions that also slowed her metabolism. After missing meditation, workouts and eating junk food, the weight piled on, she recently told the press. Winfrey was reportedly so upset by her weight gain that she didn’t allow any full-body covers of herself, only headshots. Winfrey will talk more about her plans to take better care of herself when her O story launches a weeklong series on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” beginning Jan. 5.  “Oprah’s Best Life Week” will give viewers thorough advice on health, spirit, money and relationships to guide them through the new year.

Bobby Brown

Bobby Brown’s book will be released today. The Bobby Brown autobiography, “Bobby Brown: The Truth, The Whole Truth and Nothing But …,” is to be released today, reports EUR Web. Despite months of delay, the book that was to be collaboration between then-friends, author Derrick Handspike and Brown, is apparently hitting bookstores despite disagreements between the authors. The Web site reports that the book released today by Down South Books is being called an “unauthorized autobiography.” In the book, Brown, 40, apparently dishes about his marriage to singer Whitney Houston and their troubles and explores other relationships.
