In Egypt, a train collided into three cars that were on the track, killing at least 40 people and injuring 50, reports The Associated Press. Just prior to the accident a large truck crashed into the cars, which pushed them onto the tracks. The accident happened near the city of Marsa Matrouh, which is 270 miles northwest of the nation’s capital, Cairo. On the scene, 35 people were declared dead; another five were declared dead at the hospital. Because of a lack of enforcement of traffic laws and terrible roads, accidents are not uncommon in Egypt, reports AP. In fact, accidents kill about 6,000 people every year there.

Residents flee a Nigerian town due to threats
Reported threats made by militants caused thousands to flee from the Nigerian town of Bonny, in the Niger Delta region. A Nigerian newspaper said that the unknown militants would behead anyone in the town not originally from the area, reports the BBC. The article also said the group would come to the town on July 16. “They were handing out copies of this article to people on the street. There was panic. People packed up their entire family into a boat and fled,” Kingsley Adonis Pepple, a youth leader, told the news service. Pepple said that all the known militant groups deny making such threats. The area of Bonny is no stranger militant attacks though. Two weeks ago, the group killed nine people, including a pregnant woman, in an attack on soldiers. And more recently an attack on a Navy houseboat in the Bonny Island area by 30 militants left three attackers, a navy officer and a civilian dead, according to an official. Attacks on the oil industry have cut the region’s exports be 25 percent in the last few years. Many groups attack because they want a larger share of the region’s oil wealth, reports the news service.
