National: Tyson Hopes to Publish Tell-All Autobiography; FBI Cites Increase in Mortgage Scams

February 14th, 2009

Tyson hopes to publish tell-all autobiography. Mike Tyson, one of the most discussed, criticized and talked about boxers in history, plans to tell his own story in a book. The former heavyweight champ fell from grace after what many considered a questionable rape conviction and a title fight in which he bit Evander Holyfield’s ear. The New York-born brawler says he began penning the autobiography when he was serving time for the rape in Indiana. “Me and my cell mate would read to each other at night,” Tyson recalls. “One night I would read out loud to him, the next night he would read out loud to me. And we would do that back and forth until the book was completed.” Tyson’s other headlines outside of the ring have included media coverage about a stormy relationship with ex-wife and actress Robin Givens.

FBI cites increase in mortgage scams. America’s money trouble and damaged housing industry has led to an “exponential rise” in mortgage scams, says the FBI. The bureau reports more than 1,800 ongoing investigations into mortgage fraud, double the number from 2006. There are also a reported 530 ongoing corporate fraud investigations. “The increasing mortgage, corporate fraud and financial institution failure case inventory is straining the FBI’s limited white-collar crime resources,” Deputy Director John Pistole recently told a Washington Senate hearing. The Black community has been particularly susceptible to home foreclosures and fallout from the financial impact on housing. The FBI has re-assigned some investigators of terrorist crimes to its financial crime cases.

A federal grand jury has indicted a Colorado man charged with threatening to kill President Barack Obama and blow up a suburban mall. Prosecutors say that Timothy Ryan Gutierrez, 20, of the southwestern Colorado town of Cortez, e-mailed the FBI’s Washington office eight days before Obama’s inauguration saying: “I’m going to assassinate the new president of the United States of America. P.S., you have 48 hours to stop it from happening.” Read what he said in his other threat here.

NATIONAL: FBI Looking Into Who Shot Up Black Churches; Atlanta Councilwoman Wants 911 Questions Answered

January 27th, 2009

FBI Looking Into Who Shot Up Black Churches
The FBI has jumped into the investigation into who shot up two historic Atlanta-area Black churches recently. A spokeswoman for the Peachtree City Police said that the feds are working with the Fayette Sheriff’s Office to help find the culprits who blasted the Bethlehem Baptist Church and Flat Rock AME Church in Fayetteville. The churches are about eight miles apart, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. No one was injured, the newspaper reported, and the buildings sustained exterior damage. Peachtree City police spokeswoman Capt. Rosanna Dove is asking that anyone with information on the incidents call the FBI at 404-679-9000, the Peachtree City Police Department at 770-487-8866 or the Fayette Sheriff’s Office at 770-461-6353. Callers can remain anonymous.
Atlanta Councilwoman Wants 911 Questions Answered
An Atlanta City Councilwoman, who was put on hold by a 911 dispatcher when she called to report a fight in her neighborhood, is calling for an investigation into the city’s emergency response system. But the councilwoman, Joyce Shepherd, isn’t the only one who’s upset about the city’s 911 call center.  Susan Whatley, who noticed a fire at her neighbors’ Grant Park home, placed a call to 911 on their behalf. She said the dispatcher put her on hold for about two minutes, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. It took at least 25 minutes before firefighters arrived. “I told them the fire had been going on for at least 10 minutes,” Whatley said. “I told them, ‘The whole house is on fire.’ Councilwoman Shepherd said Monday, “That is unacceptable.” She’s asked Atlanta Fire Rescue Chief Kelvin Cochran and deputy Police Chief George Turner to appear at a public safety committee meeting Tuesday to explain Saturday night’s delay in Grant Park. Miles Butler, director of Atlanta’s 911 call center, is also expected to address questions on the fire Tuesday. Butler was on city-mandated furlough Monday, she said.
