Did Chris Rock Steal Hair Film?

October 8th, 2009

rock

A federal lawsuit filed in Los Angeles alleges Chris Rock stole the concept for his upcoming documentary “Good Hair” from another filmmaker.

The Associated Press reports that Regina Kimbell through court documents calls Rock’s project a copycat of her film, “My Nappy Roots.” She is suing for $5 million in damages.

Kimbell is seeking an injunction to halt the screening of ‘Good Hair’ until the issue is resolved. The movie is set to open Friday in several markets and throughout the country on Oct.23.

RadarOnline has a copy of the deposition Rock gave to the Federal court in an effort to block the injunction. Rock admits to meeting with Kimbell but denies stealing her concept.

He said any injunction against the debut of his film will cause irreparable harm to his film and his image as an actor and producer.

Nigerians Demand Apology for District 9 Film

September 21st, 2009

district 9

Leaders of an African nation have sent a letter to Sony executives demanding an apology for the way Nigerians and other Africans were depicted in District 9, one of this year’s blockbuster summer movies.

From the Associated Press

“Information Minister Dora Akunyili has asked movie houses in the capital of Abuja to stop screening “District 9″ because the South Africa-based sci-fi movie about aliens and discrimination makes Nigerians look bad.

We have directed that they should stop public screening of the film,” she said. “We are not happy about it because it portrays Nigeria in bad light.”

Nigerian officials are offended by the barbaric and cannibalistic behaviors in the film portrayed by Africans.  As of today Sony officials have not responded to the letter.

While the movie was released in North America in August it was released in Africa a few days ago.  The objections to the film are growing as a Facebook Group, Nigerians Offended By District 9, has more than 630 members

The founder of the group also created a video explaining his cause.

Entertainment: Taraji Henson Gets Supporting Actress Nod; New Film Highlights Kwanzaa’s Appeal

December 12th, 2008

Taraji Henson

Taraji Henson gets a supporting actress nod. Actress Targaji Henson received a Golden Globe nomination for her role of Queenie in Christmas-release film “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” Henson is in contention for Best Supporting Actress honors against Penélope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona); Viola Davis (Doubt); Vera Farmiga (Nothing But the Truth); Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler) and Kate Winslet. She is the only African-American actress up for a Golden globe. The film, which stars Brad Pit, got an impressive eight nods, tying Milk for bragging rights as the Globe’s most nominated movie.

A new film highlights Kwanzaa’s appeal. Celebrating Kwanzaa has become a tradition for people around the world in the 42 years since it was created by a Los Angeles professor, and a new film highlights it’s universal appeal. Customs vary from family to family, with participants finding their own way to honor the principles of Kwanzaa, such as unity and faith, but that diversity is highlighted in a new film about the holiday called “The Black Candle.” In it, everyone – from rapper Chuck D to writer Maya Angelou and Baltimore school children – gives his take on what Kwanzaa means. Kwanzaa is celebrated between Dec. 26 and Dec. 31 and was founded in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, a professor of Africana studies at Cal State Long Beach, to pay tribute to African and African-American culture. The writer and director of the 71-minute film, 26-year-old M.K. Asante Jr., told The San Francisco Chronicle that he got the idea for the film while attending graduate school at UCLA. He said he lives by the motto, “If you make an observation, you have an obligation.” The film follows Kwanzaa from its early days in the Black Power Movement to its place now as a holiday celebrated around the world. The film airs in San Francisco this Saturday.
