Bonds’ Perjury Trial Nears The mega-high-profile perjury trial of slugging superstar Barry Bonds will begin on March 2. The former San Francisco Giants outfielder has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of making false statements and obstructing justice. The charges emanate from his appearance before a grand jury in the infamous BALCO Steroid Case. If convicted, the all-time home-run king could spend as much as two years behind bars. At issue is whether U.S. District Judge Susan Illston will allow urine samples that tested positive for steroids, which prosecutors claim belong to Bonds, and whether she will permit potential jurors to be asked if they were aware of Alex Rodriguez’s recent admission to steroid use. Among those slated to take the stand are former teammate Bobby Estalella, Bonds’ former girlfriend Kimberley Bell, Bonds’ former personal shopper Kathy Hoskins and Jason Giambi of the Oakland Athletics. Others who might be called to testify are former Major Leaguers Benito Santiago, Armando Rios, Randy Velarde and Marvin Benard.

More guns are taken from Plaxico Burress’ home. Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress’ problems just got worse. Armed with search warrants, police officers from Totowa, N.J. and New York City stormed Burress’ New Jersey home and removed several guns, including a 9-mm handgun, a rifle and bullets for .380-, .40- and .45-caliber weapons, The New York Times reports. Last month, the star wideout was arrested and charges with illegally possessing weapons after accidentally shooting himself with his .40-caliber Glock semi-automatic handgun in a Manhattan nightclub. He had tried to grab the gun as it slipped down the leg of his sweat suit. Burress was not at home when police arrived, but his wife and lawyer were there, according to the Times. New Jersey law requires weapons ID for any gun, but Totowa Police Detective Dennis Blakeley said there wasn’t “any paperwork on these guns.” Burress’ lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, told The Associated Press that he believed only a registered rifle was taken from Burress’s home and that he did not know whether Burress would face additional charges.

Is Oprah heading to D.C.? Oprah Winfrey, who definitely has the ear of President-elect Barack Obama, reportedly is eyeing a $50 million, nine-bedroom crib a relative stone’s throw from the White House, The New York Post reports. The speculation is that Winfrey, who used her well-documented mojo to help get Obama elected, would serve in his kitchen cabinet – an influential adviser without an official title. “She has never personally been to see [the home],” a source told the News. FOX News reports that the only home listing that fits the description is a $49 million, nine-bedroom, four-bathroom mansion on 3.5 acres, with a parking lot for 100 cars, a gatehouse, and additional building overlooking the Washington Monument.

Gary Sheffield belts league benchmark
The Tigers’ Gary Sheffield has hit the Major Leagues’ 250,000th home run. The score, which totaled the number of homers by all players since the establishment of the pros, occurred during a Monday Detroit win against the Athletics. Sheffield’s grand slam, his second homer of the game, also leaves him just four shy of 500 career home runs. Starting with the National League, the first homer recorded occurred on May 2, 1876.
Golfer wins water war with 129,000 gallons per month

How huge would a crib have to be to use 129,000 gallons of water a month? Tiger Woods knows. The Orlando Sentinel reports that while an average home uses 10,000 gallons monthly, Woods’ house on Jupiter Island near Palm Beach soaks up over 10 times the norm. Fellow Floridian athletes Grant Hill and Dwight Howard put out eye-popping numbers, too: Hill reportedly used 263,000 gallons in May alone, Howard, 189,000 gallons in July. Sounds like plenty of pool parties or lots of toilet flushing – or maybe both.

Boxing champ’s $7 million in jewelry stolen from his home.
If you run into boxing’s big baller, Floyd “Money” Mayweather, he may be a little light around the neck, wrist and fingers. The recently retired fighter, who was once featured on YouTube.com counting out his cash before all the World Wide Web, evidently attracted attention from thieves who allegedly took $7 million in jewels from Mayweather’s crib. The burglary occurred last month when suspects reportedly entered Pretty Boy’s house through his bedroom window. But Mayweather only recently announced a $100,000 reward for information. At least one of the suspects’ partly concealed face is caught on surveillance video. Too bad Mayweather’s cameras don’t capture intruders as well as his own grill.
