Nigerian man who married 86 wives is arrested. A Nigerian man, who has 86 wives, was arrested for refusing to divorce all but four. Mohammadu Bello Abubakar, a Muslim preacher, was charged by the country’s Niger state (a government that operates under Muslim law) with “insulting religious creed” and “unlawful marriages.” But Abubakar, who has 170 children with his wives, insists that the Koran does not state any punishment for having over four wives. According to Muslim scholars, up to four wives are allowed providing that they are all treated equally. He is being held without bail until a hearing on October 6. Local authorities previously told Abubakar he had to divorce 82 of his wives by the end of August, or he will face eviction from his home. But last week he won an injunction that stopped them for evicting him for that reason. They will hold a hearing Thursday to determine whether or not that order was a violation of his human rights.

They will also give the messages to leaders from around the world when they come to the General Assembly meeting on September 23. The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 and every year the U.N. looks forward to this “day of ceasefire and non-violence.” People all over the world, including in war torn areas like Sudan and Afghanistan, will participate in this year’s celebrations.

Ex-husband of Atlanta mayor dies. David McCoy Franklin, the ex-husband of Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin who was a trusted adviser of former Mayor Maynard Jackson, died Sunday, according to a death notice issued by Murray Brothers Funeral Home in Atlanta . He was 65. No cause of death has been disclosed. Franklin had suffered a long illness, Angelo Fuster, former spokesman for Jackson , told The Associated Press. Fuster said that Franklin ’s political smarts were “quite valued,” AP reports.

Philly cops nab third suspect in cold-blooded murder. Philadelphia Police have netted a third suspect in connection with the slaying of a 78-year-old Korean War vet who was shot in the face last week by thugs who attempted to rob him outside a Veterans of Foreign Wars post. The murder of the “sweet and gentle man,” as neighbors described him, shocked the community and the police, which launched an intense investigation into the homicide. Last Thursday detectives arrested two 18-year-olds, Karl Jarmon and Terrell Bennett. Their alleged accomplice, 15-year-old Gary Autrey, is now under arrest, according to homicide Lt. Mel Williams. The trio is being held without bail, charged with murder, conspiracy and weapons charges, police said. “We are satisfied that we took these predators off the streets and we made an arrest in a timely manner, and we were able to give the family closure,” said Lt. Williams. “It’s a tragedy whenever people prey on the old.” Enor Williams had been married to Connie Williams nearly 40 years and, according to The Philadelphia Daily News, was a devoted volunteer at the post. “I hate that [the murder] was the last thing that happened to him,” his 59-year-old widow told the newspaper. “I knew they would find him,” she said of the suspected gunman. “I don’t know how, but I did.” *

Her version of the shooting contradicts police account
A Los Angeles woman says that LAPD officers opened fire on her husband, killing him for no other reason than that he was Black, The Los Angeles Daily News reports. Laura Cox, who filed a lawsuit against the department last week, is claiming discrimination, civil-rights violations, wrongful death, negligence and battery in the March 1 episode. She told the News that her husband was in a car accident, which left him dazed and disoriented, so when officers asked him to step out of the car, he was unable to respond immediately. “He did not attempt to flee the scene, he merely began running for his life when the defendants opened fire on him for no reason,” the lawsuit says. “Mrs. Cox contends that the defendants would not have fatally shot her husband to death had he not been African-American.” Laura Cox is seeking unspecified damages. That account does not jibe with the officers’ version. They contend that the 38-year-old man crashed his speeding truck into a tree, and when officers ordered him to surrender – for more than 15 minutes – he threatened them. Next, he fled, pointing something at them that looked like a gun, which forced officers to shoot him, the News reports. The item he was holding turned out to be a power adapter for a car cigarette lighter. He died shortly after arriving at California Hospital Medical Center.

In the lawsuit filed today, Hunter is accused of trying to hire a hitman – a fellow WLBS employee – to cancel Miss Jones. Lawyers for neither party could be reached.
