June 24th, 2009

Former Rwandan Official Arrested
Rwanda’s former deputy interior minister was sentenced to 30 years in jail for participating in the country’s 1994 genocide. Callixte Kalimanzira, 54, who was arrested in 2005, allegedly tricked thousands of Tutsis into going to Kabuye Hill where they thought they would receive food and shelter. Instead, they were murdered by militias, the BBC reports. Kalimanzira, who was tried by the Tanzania-based International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, also is accused of supervising massacres in the region of Butare. He pleaded not guilty at the time of his arrest. In 1994, 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were murdered in a period of 100 days. The tribunal, created to bring the genocide leaders to justice, has entered 38 judgments in total, reports Reuters.

Haiti to Receive $120 Million in Grants
Haiti, one of the world’s poorest nations, is slated to receive $120 million in grants from the Inter-American Development Bank, reports the BBC. The grants, which will be disbursed in 2010, will assist the Caribbean nation with improving its transportation infrastructure and water services, among other projects. The IADB gave Haiti $100 million for 2009 and $50 million in 2007 and 2008.

WORLD: U.S. Teacher Accused in Rwandan Genocide; Guyana Airport Closes Over Strike

February 4th, 2009

U.S. Teacher Accused in Rwandan Genocide
A Baltimore college has suspended one of its professors after hearing accusations that he participated in Rwanda’s genocide, reports the BBC.  The professor, Leople Munyakazi, was working at Goucher College under a program designed for foreign professors who feared for their lives in their home countries. During just 100 days in 1994, Hutu militias killed about 800,000 Tutsis and others.  Munyakazi, who is a Hutu, claims he was persecuted by the Rwanda’s government and was jailed without a trial for five years for genocide accusations. “I’m not hiding; I was never involved in genocide,” Munyakazi said. The president of Goucher, Sanford Ungar, sent out a letter to the school community saying he was alerted to the charges against Munyakazi when a journalist and a prosecutor came to the school. The duo told him that witnesses had seen him participate in the genocide. “Dr. Munyakazi vehemently denies any involvement in committing genocide, and has presented evidence that he assisted numerous Tutsis in fleeing Hutu killers,” said the letter. Munyakazi, who taught French at the school, is suspended pending an investigation, Ungar said.

Guyana Airport Closes Over Strike
Guyana’s international airport is shut down due to a strike by air traffic controllers, which started Friday, reports Caribbean Net. The strike forced the airline to stop flights on Sunday, leaving passengers who were headed to Guyana stranded in Trinidad. All of the air traffic controllers are protesting nonpayment of overtime and salary increases for last year. They contend they will stay off the job until their demands are met.
