Giants’ Receiver Gets a Rare Legal Win

January 15th, 2009

N.Y. Giants receiver Plaxico Burress got a rare legal win Wednesday when a Pennsylvania jury sided with the troubled baller in a civil dispute over an impounded vehicle. Fred Laurenzo, who owns a car dealership in Lebanon, Pa., loaned Burress a 2004 Avalanche truck, worth $36,000, in exchange for autograph signings and other publicity events. But New York City Police impounded the truck, telling Laurenzo that it had been involved in a crime. He said that Burress never contacted police to resolve the matter, and it remained in custody for about a year. Laurenzo sued for $19,000. But a jury awarded him only $1,700, the amount that Burress had contended he was responsible for. Burress still faces gun charges after shooting himself in the leg in a New York restaurant.

SPORTS: Burress Can’t Shake Trouble; Texas Tech Star to Go Pro

January 14th, 2009

Burress is Sued Over a Vehicle
New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress can’t seem to shake the drama. The troubled baller is now involved in a civil suit by a car dealer to determine how much he will be forced to pay for a $36,000 Chevy Avalanche he leased that was impounded by New York City Police. The dealer, Frederick Laurenzo, said he thought it would be “good for my business,” to allow Burress in 2006 to borrow the 2004 vehicle. In exchange, Burress had agreed to sign autographs at promotional events. But just a month after the agreement, Laurenzo said police called him to say they had impounded the car because it was connected with a crime. Laurenzo said he then called Burress and told him to contact police and straighten out the matter. However, Burress never called police or returned Laurenzo’s calls, according to Laurenzo. He said it took him a year to get his vehicle back from police.
Texas Tech Star is NFL Bound
Texas Tech’s Michael Crabtree is going pro after two years of college football. He said there’s very little left for him to accomplish at the university level. So how high does he think he’ll go in the draft? “As far as I’ve seen, top 5. That’s what I’m striving for,” Crabtree said. His size, strength and unique set of skills have enabled him to average 120.3 yards and 1.6 touchdowns per game in college. Over his college career, he made 231 catches for 3,127 yards and 41 touchdowns, especially impressive for two years in college. “I feel like the next level will be a big challenge for me and I’m looking forward to it,” Crabtree said.
