Lee Pushes a ‘Godfather’ Film of His Own
Actor-director Spike Lee says he’s surging ahead with his plan to make a film about the life of Godfather of Soul James Brown. “We’re doing it together, it’s going to happen,” Lee told MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival. Shortly after Brown’s death, Lee and Paramount Pictures purchased the rights to the singer’s life. The film will feature the singer’s voice dubbed over Snipes’ voice. “I want to hear James Brown’s voice,” Lee said. “That’s just my personal taste.” Lee had better hurry if he plans on getting the film done any time soon. Snipes was sentenced to three years in prison in April 2008 after being convicted of federal income tax evasion; he remains free while awaiting an appeal.

Janet Can’t Shake Her Nasty Troubles
Troubles continue for pop diva Janet Jackson. Last year her Witchu Tour withered as dates were canceled one after another due to an alleged illness. In the another recent snafu, she reportedly has split with her second major label in less than three years following the poor showing on her last CD, Discipline. Now, her Japan tour is a no-go due to the global financial crisis, according to BBC News, which reports that concert promoter Kyodo Yokohama announced that Jackson was nixing five dates between Feb. 14 and Feb. 22. The 42-year-old singer was planning to visit such major Japanese cities as Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka on the world Rock Witchu outing, which was her first major tour in nearly seven years.

A doctor has reportedly ordered Janet Jackson to put her “Rock Witchu” tour on hold again on the day that she was to resume her shows in New York. Jackson had canceled a date in Connecticut this past weekend. The performer’s first North American tour in seven years has been plagued by poor ticket sales and Jackson’s undisclosed health challenges – plus whispers that her health is being used as an excuse to avoid the embarrassment of empty arena seats. Jackson was rushed to a Montreal hospital before her show in the city last month, but she was released the next day. The singer has also postponed this week’s concert at Madison Square Garden.

Claiming she’s not fully recovered from her recent illness – but fueling more speculation that ticket sales are slow – Janet Jackson’s rep says the singer’s been sent home on doctor’s orders. Jackson, whose brother Randy recently said she has vertigo, scrapped performances in Greensboro, N.C., Atlanta and Fort Lauderdale, which were scheduled through tonight. Her other cancellations have included Boston, Philadelphia and Montreal, where she was hospitalized after reportedly falling ill before she was to take stage.

Don Cheadle is among winners of British award.

Actor Don Cheadle will receive the British Academy of Film and Television Arts/Los Angeles (BAFTA) humanitarian award for his non-profit. Co-founded with his fellow Ocean’s Eleven stars George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, Not on Our Watch is devoted to ending human rights atrocities in Africa. Cheadle earned an Oscar nomination for his starring role in Hotel Rwanda, which documents the true story of a hero who intervened for peace during an African nation’s civil war. BAFTA will recognize Cheadle in Hollywood next month.

Could poor sales be what made Janet sick?

Two more shows in Boston and Philadelphia have been cancelled since Janet Jackson missed a Montreal tour date because of a reported illness. Chatter from both the Web and the streets has it that “Miss Jackson, if you’re nasty” is scratching appearances because she’s already performed to plenty of empty arena seats and has been losing cash from poor ticket sales. A Michigan show has been re-scheduled. There’s even speculation that the Montreal cancellation was a stunt Jackson pulled less than an hour before showtime, rather than a true health concern – which, if true, may explain her man Jermaine Dupri’s high-profile partying the same night that she was hospitalized.
