Jesse Jackson, Jr. is Target of Ethics Probe

April 9th, 2009

A congressional ethics panel is looking into possible violations by Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. during his attempt to acquire Barack Obama’s then-vacant seat in the U.S. Senate. Jackson and others had courted Gov. Rod Blagojevich, hoping to be granted the slot. Blagojevich has since been booted from the governor’s chair after being charged with trying to sell the Senate seat to the highest bidder. Late last month, the Office of Congressional  Ethics voted to investigate Jackson, who is being required to relinquish a number of documents, e-mails and other correspondence from Blagojevich’s gubernatorial and campaign staff regarding Jackson, Jackson’s brother Jonathan and his campaign staff, the Sun-Times reported. Jackson, who has not been charged with any wrongdoing, is the son of civil rights icon the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr. In its criminal complaint against Blagojevich, the government listed a mysterious “Senate Candidate A” as one of several candidates that authorities say the former governor considered for the seat now held by Roland Burris. Jackson’s supporters were willing to raise $1.5 million for Blagojevich if he picked the congressman, the complaint said.

King’s Son Delivers Counterpunch To Siblings

August 21st, 2008

The youngest son of Martin Luther King Jr. fights back

Dexter King
Two children of Martin Luther King Jr. have been sued by the institution their mother founded, under allegations by their brother that they have used The King Center for Nonviolent Change for personal gain. Dexter King, the center’s chairman, filed the lawsuit Monday against his brother and sister, Martin Luther King III and Bernice King, in a countersuit to the one his siblings filed against him earlier this year. Dexter says his siblings have established foundations in direct competition with The King Center for Nonviolent Change, according to The Associated Press. Dexter King also says in the lawsuit that his brother used the center without permission to meet with then-presidential candidate John Edwards in January 2008. In July, Bernice and Martin Luther King III sued their brother to force him to open the books of their father’s estate.

Entertainment News: Yung Berg Arrested For Allegedly Carrying Weed, Gun; Sammy Davis Jr. Died Still Millions In Debt

August 12th, 2008

Rapper appears to be under “dark butts” curse.

Yung Berg

Yung Berg faces more troubles than just fan backlash after he was arrested on charges of criminal possession of a weapon, marijuana and menacing after a dispute with his limo driver. Berg is still suffering after he made comments dissing dark-skinned women and was subsequently booed at a Dallas show and practically ignored by D.C. fans, who barely turned out for a promo event. Berg’s limo driver reportedly called cops after the argument with the rapper. Police at the scene arrested Berg on the drug and gun charges.

Sammy Davis Jr. died still millions in debt.

Sammy Davis Jr.

Singer, dancer and film star Sammy Davis Jr. owed the IRS $15 million when he died, despite having earned over $50 million, a new book details. The man who inspired both tap dancers, like Savion Glover, and impressionists, like Eddie Griffin, even declined radiation treatment for throat cancer, saying he couldn’t work without being able to sing. The biography “Deconstructing Sammy,” described as a tell-all, explores the life of the entertainer. Davis died in 1990.

Sports: Ken Griffey Jr., Manny Ramirez Traded; LeBron James Hits 20 In 114-82 Win; Chris Henry Suspended First Four NFL Games

August 1st, 2008

Baseball stars have new Major League homes.

Ken Gruffey Jr

Two of baseball’s biggest names have found new Major League homes. Ken Griffey Jr. has left the Reds for the White Sox, while Manny Ramirez trades his Red Sox jersey for a Dodgers uniform. A Ramirez trade was both speculated and doubted as unlikely for much of the week as Thursday’s deadline for swaps approached. The slugger stated publicly that he was “tired” of Boston. Griffey’s move to Chicago was approved by the player hours after word of the deal reached fans and media. The Cincinnatian hit his 600th home run for the Reds this year. Get the lastest on the last-minute trades at Playa Hater.

LeBron James hits 20 in 114-82 win.

LeBron James

LeBron “King” James led all scorers in the first U.S. men’s basketball team exhibition versus Turkey Thursday. Hitting 20 in the 114-82 win, he drew praise from several teammates, including Dwight Howard, who says James played “excellently.” James had sprained an ankle last week when he landed on a player’s foot during a scrimmage, but appears to have fully recovered from the injury. “Obviously, he’s healthy,” U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski says. The coach jokingly added that he “voted twice” for James as player of the game. Carmelo Anthony scored 17 points.

Chris Henry suspended first four NFL games. Even if he’s given a contract, a legally troubled NFL player won’t be able to play the first four games of the coming season. The league suspended former Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry Thursday, leaving him eligible to suit up 12 times if he’s picked up by a squad. He was suspended eight games last year for player misconduct off the field. Cincinnati released Henry in April after his fifth arrest. His most recent legal snag occurred when he allegedly punched a college student and broke the student’s car window with a bottle. The criminal case against him was eventually dismissed.
