Laila Ali delivered baby last month. Boxer and TV commentator Laila Ali has finally announced the birth of her first child. Curtis Muhammad, whose middle name honors his grandfather, Muhammad Ali, was born Aug. 26. But Ali posted the news on her Web site Thursday. Ali wed Curtis Conway last year in California. A statement on the Web site read: “Although mom and baby are both healthy and happy, there were some surprises during labor that altered Laila’s birth plan. Mama and baby are resting.”

Ken Griffey Jr. is enjoying career in Chi. Following a trade that moved the future Hall of Famer from Cincinnati to Chicago, Ken Griffey Jr. is having a ball with his new teammates. “This is the most fun I’ve ever had on a team,” Griffey said recently. “I’ve never laughed this much at the ballpark in my life.” Fellow Sox agree that levity has its place in the locker room and among the squad members. Griffey has been well-received in Chicago since the trade.

NFL player apologizes for attack on his teammate.
Panthers’ Steve Smith broke Ken Lucas’ nose The Carolina Panthers wide receiver who attacked a teammate last week in a training camp dispute has apologized to teammates, coaches, fans and his family. Steve Smith broke cornerback Ken Lucas’ nose during practice and was suspended without pay for the first two regular-season games. “I’m completely wrong,” Smith says. “It was an asinine decision. And I’ll move forward better than I probably have ever had to. It’s the first time in my life that I really haven’t forgiven myself.” Lucas, who won’t play for two to three weeks, was on one knee and wearing no helmet when Smith punched him. He says the incident could be a “blessing in disguise” that brings the team closer together.
Dennis Rodman allegedly failed to pay debt for 18 months. Former NBA rebounding threat Dennis Rodman’s Mercedes S600 has been impounded after he allegedly failed to pay the vehicle’s registration for more than a year. Rodman, who’s had other recent troubles, including a domestic violence arrest and a $400,000 tax bill, says he thought his former business manager had paid the registration. Rodman’s whip was taken away by cops this past weekend after a woman driving the Benz was pulled over by officers.

Pro Bowl safety will get a guaranteed $15 million.The Dallas Cowboys’ franchise player has signed a six-year, $39 million contract with the team. Ken Hamlin, a Pro Bowl safety, is guaranteed to earn $15 million, including a $9 million signing bonus. Hamlin’s deal was complete before a 4 p.m. NFL deadline Tuesday, by which teams were required to finalize long-term deals.
Rays Reyes is ‘relieved’
Major League Baseball pitcher Al Reyes won’t face charges stemming from a fight he had at a restaurant while celebrating his 38th birthday this year. Prosecutors dropped their case against the Tampa Bay Rays pitcher, who was hit with a Taser after the April bar fight. Reyes allegedly fell into a ceramic pot and then picked a fight with the man who he thought had pushed him. He later publicly apologized. Robert Heyman, Reyes’ lawyer, says the Dominican pitcher is “certainly relieved.”
