University of Texas sack leader Sergio Kindle was treated for a concussion last week after slamming his vehicle into an apartment building while sending or receiving a text message, according to his attorney. The Longhorn linebacker apparently lost control of his car on June 24 while fidgeting with his texting device, said Brian Roark, the lawyer. “It was probably something he should not have been doing,” Roark said. That careless act caused nearly $9,000 in damage, but no one inside the building was hurt, he said. Kindle pushed his car back in the street and went home. Later, doctors told him he had a concussion but did not require hospitalization. The embarrassed linebacker told his coach about the incident the next morning, University of Texas spokesman John Bianco said. “We’re glad nobody else was hurt and he’s going to be fine,” Bianco said. Police say they are investigating, but no charges have been filed. Kindle, a senior from Dallas, led his team with 10 sacks last season. In 2007, he missed the first three games while serving a suspension for a drunken driving arrest, Sports Illustrated reports.

Giants linebacker is silent about Burress shooting. Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce may have been with star wideout Plaxico Burress when Burress accidentally shot himself at a nightclub Saturday, but little else is clear about the incident. Initial reports said that Pierce tried to help Burress cover up the mishap by trying to hide Burress’ gun and dump it somewhere, to keep his squadmate from facing charges for having an unlicensed weapon. Pierce has refused to answer any questions about the episode, according to published reports. Giants General Manager Jerry Reese said Pierce “has been cooperative with NFL security and with the police.”

Hoops teams defeat Down Under opposition. Both the men’s and women’s Olympic basketball teams have defeated their Australian opponents. The men’s squad is undefeated in pre-competition during the games in China after putting down Australia 87-76 Tuesday. Australia gave the men their first challenge, but guard Dwyane Wade says there’s no need for concern. “Nothing alarming for us,” he says. “It’s alarming when you lose.” Meanwhile, Lisa Leslie led with 14 points in the United States ’ 71-67 victory over Australia ’s women. The U.S. ladies captured the Diamond Ball tournament title, and will move on to the quest for gold medals at Beijing .

Bulldogs dismiss linebacker after vandalism. The Georgia Bulldogs have suspended Darius Dewberry after he allegedly broke a parking lot barrier and potted plants at a hospital. The linebacker was attempting to visit teammate Donavon Baldwin, who was arrested for his alleged involvement in a fight and receiving stitches following the weekend incident. Dewberry “was very distraught about a teammate getting hurt badly,” says Coach Mark Richt. The player’s discipline follows a string of episodes involving Bulldogs players this season. Dewberry has reportedly agreed to pay for the damages and the hospital is not pressing charges. Richt says the linebacker must perform 20 hours of community service, undergo counseling and work a part-time job while he misses the first two games of the season.

College football player arrested for allegedly dealing cocaine
Senior Alabama defenseman Jimmy Johns has been charged with felony drug dealing after allegedly selling cocaine on his school’s Tuscaloosa campus. “He didn’t want them to know he was involved in it,” the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force’s Capt. Jeff Snyder says of Johns’ teammates. Coach Nick Saban moved quickly to cut Johns, whose bond was set at $120,000. “This type of behavior obviously will not be tolerated and he is no longer a part of our program,” Saban’s statement read. Alabama players have been involved in various legal scrapes and hit with suspensions recently. Police say they got tips about Johns’ alleged drug involvement just two months after Saban said of his players’ misconduct that “enough is enough.”
