But Tim Montgomery, who dated Jones, told Bryant Gumbel on Tuesday night’s “Real Sports” that he wouldn’t comment on Jones’ recent denial to Oprah Winfrey that she knew she was given steroids. “I’m not going to lie,” said Montgomery. “I knew.” Like Jones, Montgomery was disgraced and discredited from wins in the 2000 Olympics. He admitted to Gumbel that he used steroids because he was “very lazy.” “I wanted my name in the papers and my face on TV,” he added. Montgomery is serving nine years in prison and will serve an additional five for selling heroin.

Kelvin Sampson sanctioned by college league. Ex-Indiana hoops coach Kelvin Sampson can’t coach a college team for at least five years after an NCAA sanction against him. Sampson, who resigned from Indiana last February and works as an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks, was accused of recruiting violations. “A head coach does not promote compliance when he intentionally ignores committee penalties directed at him for intentional rules violations,” states an NCAA report. “A head coach also does not promote compliance when he himself commits intentional violations.”

Browns owner says he’ll soon decide Romeo Crennel’s future. Coach Romeo Crennel could suffer the consequences of a disappointing Cleveland Browns season come January. Browns owner Randy Lerner says he’ll hold off on deciding if Crennel and general manager Phil Savage still have a future with the team. One season after winning 10 games and sending six players to the Pro Bowl, the Browns are 4-7 and not positioned to play in the post-season. Crennel received a lucrative contract extension after last season’s success with the team.

Saying she will focus on efforts to help children learn from her mistakes, recently released Olympian Marion Jones gave her first interview to Oprah Winfrey since being stripped of five Olympic medals and serving several months of jail time for lying in court about using steroids. Once the world’s most famous woman sprinter, Jones still insists she didn’t knowingly take performance-enhancing drugs, believing they were a diet supplement. “I’m trying to move on,” she told Winfrey. “I hope that everybody else can move on, too.” Asked about her lowest moment while jailed, Jones said “so many things to count.” She concluded that missing the birthdays of both her 5- and 1-year-old sons topped the list. Jones wept as she read a letter she’d written to the boys while incarcerated. But she expressed a new pleasure at having people deal with her as a non-sports heroine. “I appreciate, so much, the little things,” Jones added. “I am energized by this next chapter.”
