David Dinkins, the first African-American mayor of New York City calls out President Obama for not doing more to help out the Democratic candidate Bill Thompson who lost to incumbent Michael Bloomberg.
From New York Post:
“The president should’ve done more. He found time to go to Virginia, he found time to go to New Jersey and he should’ve been here,” former Mayor David Dinkins, who was in office from 1990 through 1993.
He was referring to Obama’s stumping with New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, who lost to Republican Chris Christie this week, and Virginia Democrat Creigh Deeds, who lost the gubernatorial race to GOP candidate Bob McDonnell.
By comparison, the country’s first black president gave the most lukewarm of endorsements to Thompson, who lost to Mayor Bloomberg by a mere 5 points on Tuesday.

Representatives from African, Asian and the Caribbean nations reeling from the worldwide economic crisis met at the U.N. headquarters in New York to make a plea. At the meeting the officials asked wealthy countries, who they say are to blame for the bad economy in the first place, to help out struggling nations financially. Money from exports have decreased and migrant workers don’t send as much money home as they used to, representatives said at the conference, reports the BBC. Poorer nations need “specific arrangements for the flow of resources to our governments,” said Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow, who spoke for the Caribbean. There were mostly Latin American and Caribbean presidents and prime ministers at the conference, which was set up allow undeveloped countries voice their concerns, the BBC reports.

At least one person opened fire in a Binghamton, New York, building Friday morning, killing at least 12 or 13 people, according to Gov. David Patterson, and holding up to 40 more hostage. One gunman was also killed, according to law enforcement. “This is a horrible situation. There’s no available data on what’s going on there other than the fact that lives have been lost,” said Gov. Peterson, reports CNN. More than 12 were wounded in the gun fire, according to preliminary reports. The shooting took place at the American Civic Association, a place that assists immigrants, while people were taking a citizenship test, a source told the Associated Press. SWAT team sharpshooters are positioned outside of the building and the FBI plans to send in hostage negotiators. A nearby high school has been put on lockdown. Story developing.

Looks like Caroline Kennedy, who many politicos seemed certain would be named to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Hillary Clinton, has backed out. Polls have shown that Kennedy would have been an unpopular choice among New Yorkers. That reality, combined with the fact that Gov. David Paterson has assured that he is still in the interviewing stage, eroded the notion that Kennedy was a shoe-in for the slot. According to CNN, as of about 8 p.m. Wednesday, she had not yet informed New York Gov. David Paterson of her decision to withdraw. Kennedy is the 51-year-old daughter of President John F. Kennedy. Initially, she expressed her interest in being appointed to the junior senator spot, but her suggestion sparked widespread disapproval from many who said she lacked the political experience to hold such a weighty title. Others, however, were excited about the possibility of a Kennedy representing them, considering the clout that the name brings to the table. Caroline Kennedy’s decision coincides with the failing health of her uncle, Sen. Edward Kennedy, who collapsed on Tuesday during the Inauguration lunch. Kennedy was diagnosed with a deadly form of brain cancer in May, and he has been undergoing treatment.

Cuomo in the Running for Hillary’s Senate Seat
New York Gov. David Paterson acknowledged Tuesday that he is considering appointing Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to Hillary Clinton’s vacated U.S. Senate seat. At first, neither Paterson nor Cuomo would acknowledge that the son of former Democratic Gov. Mario Cuomo was in the running for the post. Suddenly, the notion that Caroline Kennedy is a shoe-in to fill the void is no longer a given. “He has outstanding qualities and is someone I am considering,” Paterson told CBS News at an interview during the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Paterson also reiterated his contention that there are still several other candidates in the mix. Still, Kennedy, whose uncle, longtime Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy collapsed during an inauguration lunch Tuesday, is considered by many to be a favorite possibility. “I was very impressed by her in our conversation. I found her to be very hardworking, very forthright. And she had some faux pas with the media when she first started, as have a number of people who have gone on to be outstanding in their service,” Paterson said. “So I am weighing her ability and her acumen and what she might be able to do in New York, more than that, and also, in comparison with some rather stiff competition in New York.”

Bush snatches back a pardon. With the potential of a scandal to mark one of his last official acts as commander in chief, President Bush has yanked back a pardon he awarded to a man accused of steering poor and minority people toward overpriced mortgages and loans with hidden costs. Isaac Toussie, one of 19 people that Bush pardoned on Tuesday, had been convicted of mail fraud and making false statements to the Housing and Urban Development Department. In the rare presidential revocation of a pardon, White House press secretary Dana Perino said that Bush made his decision “based on information that has subsequently come to light.” Turns out that Toussie’s father donated $28,500 to the Republican Party, just before his son petitioned the White House for the pardon.
