Cop accused of shooting handcuffed man quits. Hundreds of Oakland businesses are still cleaning up damage to buildings after a violent downtown protest. In a scene resembling the Los Angeles uprisings after 1992’s Rodney King beating trial verdict, about 100 people were arrested after breaking windows and trashing stores days after a 22-year-old Black man’s death. But as others had done in L.A., some of those vandalizing in outrage over the police shooting of Oscar Grant III left Black-owned establishments damaged, knowingly or otherwise. Read the rest here.

Youth could serve life if convicted of officer’s murder. The 16-year-old who police say killed an Oak Park, Mich. cop has been charged as an adult. Jonathan Belton allegedly shot officer Mason Samborski, 28, on Dec. 28 after Samborski stopped Belton for driving without a license. Oak Park cops insist that Samborski took Belton into the lot of an apartment complex to release him to an adult without arresting him. But what caused a struggle between the teen and Samborski before the officer was shot in the head is unknown. Belton turned himself in after the incident. He pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and is being held without bond. Samborski, who was married and dad to a small daughter, was buried this week. Belton was first arraigned as a juvenile, but could now face life in prison if convicted.

N.Y. officer kills self after fatal stun gun case.
The New York City Police lieutenant who ordered another officer to fire a stun gun at an emotionally disturbed man who fell to his death killed himself Thursday, The Associated Press reports. Last week, Lt. Michael Pigott (pictured on the right), a 21-year veteran of the police force, was stripped of gun and badge and given desk duty following the Sept. 24 incident that led to the death of Iman Morales, who tumbled 10 feet to his death as shocked onlookers witnessed the tragic event. Morales’ mother had summoned police, saying that her son had threatened to kill himself. When officers arrived, Morales fled naked and perched himself atop a 10-foot window ledge. He then began to jab at police with an 8-foot fluorescent light. Pigott then told an officer to zap Morales with a 50,000-volt stun gun, which sent the 35-year-old man lunging to the ground like a missile. A man below captured the unfortunate incident on a video recorder, who posted it on the Web. News stations have been showing the tape over the past few days. Pigot apologized, saying “I am truly sorry.” Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly expressed condolences to the family of Pigott, who was to turn 46 the day of his suicide, saying that Pigott had served with distinction.
