World News: Castro Says Judge Deserved To Get Kicked In The Face; Hijacked Sudanese Plane Lands In Libya

August 27th, 2008

Hijacked Sudanese plane lands in Libya. A plane, hijacked not too long after leaving Sudan’s Darfur region, landed in Kufra, Libya, reports CNN. The plane, believed to be hijacked by rebels, had about 87 passengers and 10 crew members on board, although the number of hijackers onboard is not known. Some of the passengers on the plane were officials from Sudan’s interim government, according to a Sudanese news service. They originally had wanted to land the plane in Egypt, but the Egyptian government would not give them permission, said Sudan’s U.S. ambassador, John Ukec. But at least one Egyptian official is saying that story is not true. “The hijacked plane never entered Egyptian airspace. It never requested to land on Egyptian soil …We understand that it had a tank that would allow it to fly for four hours. It flew directly toward Kufra,” said the leader of Egypt’s civil aviation control. The airline says passenger safety is their number one priority. “We are in contact with Libyan officials because of this dangerous event. We want to resolve the situation as soon as we can in a way where we can guarantee the safety of all our passengers,” an Sun Air airlines official told a Sudanese news service.

Castro says judge deserved to get kicked in the face

 Castro

Cuba’s former leader, Fidel Castro, stuck up for an athlete who kicked an Olympic judge in the face, reports The Associated Press. Angel Matos, who competed for Cuba in this year’s Olympics doing taekwondo, was so mad he was disqualified from a match that he kicked the judge in the face. Officials of the sport would like him to be banned for life for the conduct, but Castro is standing strong behind Matos, saying he “was predisposed and indignant” when he was unfairly disqualified. “He couldn’t contain himself.” Matos was actually winning the match when, after a hard fall to the mat, he had to take an injury timeout. Competitors are only allowed one minute, so he was disqualified when he took more time than allotted. Cuba’s showing in boxing also got Castro heated and crying foul. “I saw when the judges blatantly stole fights from two Cuban boxers in the semifinals. Our fighters … had hopes of winning, despite the judges, but it was useless. They were condemned beforehand,” he wrote in a newspaper editorial. Cuba, considered an Olympic boxing powerhouse, took home no boxing golds this year. (They won four silver and four bronze boxing medals).  Overall, the nation only took home two golds in this year’s games, which is less than the nine they won in Athens.

Sports: Samuel Wanjiru Makes History With Record Marathon Time; NFL’s Osi Umenyiora To Undergo Surgery

August 25th, 2008

Runner is first Kenyan to win Olympics event. An African distance runner has made history for both his nation and the world. Samuel Wanjiru set an Olympics marathon record Sunday with a time of two hours, six minutes and 32 seconds. He also won the first gold medal of any Kenyan to compete in the Games. “In Kenya, we have many medals, but I’m glad I have this one,” says Wanjiru, 21. Kenyans have won silver medals in the men’s marathon twice, most recently in 2000.

NFL’s Osi Umenyiora to undergo surgery. A New York Giants defensive end won’t play in an NFL game before 2009 after injuring his left knee this past weekend. Osi Umenyiora was hurt in the second quarter of a pre-season game against the Jets. An MRI found a tear in Umenyiora’s lateral meniscus. The two-time Pro Bowler will undergo surgery tomorrow. “It was obviously the news that I did not want to hear,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin says. “But after listening to the explanation and (the doctor’s) thoughts on it, I am convinced that this is the right procedure and the right way to go.” Umenyiora’s loss, involving a four-month recovery, is compounded by the recent retirement of star defender Michael Strahan.

A Jamaican sprinter makes Olympic history in Beijing

Usain
Winning by a full four body-lengths over American defending champ Shawn Crawford, Jamaica’s Usain Bolt made Olympic history Wednesday. Bolt became the first-ever sprinter to break world records and win gold medals in both the 100- and 200-meter races during one Olympics. “I blew my mind and I blew the world’s mind,” Bolt says. His 19.30 seconds in the 200 made him the first man since Carl Lewis to sweep gold medals from both sprints. Lewis did so in 1984. Bolt also beat Michael Johnson’s 12-year-old record of 19.32 seconds. Not even Olympics legend Jesse Owens completed a 100, 200 sweep. Sports: King James Guarantees Olympic Gold; Kardashian Expects Proposal From Reggie Bush

July 28th, 2008

NBA star tells Time US will win

LeBron James

In a recent issue of Time magazine, LeBron James guarantees that the USA will return to its past Olympics glory at the coming Beijing games. Comparing the anticipated thrill of taking the gold medal to opening gifts at Christmas, the NBA star is asked if he’s promising the top prize. “Absolutely,” James states twice. The Cleveland Cavaliers star sat out last Friday’s practice game with a sprained ankle, but he is expected to recover in time for the China competitions. The USA hasn’t taken gold in men’s basketball at the Olympics since 2000.

Kardashian expects proposal from Reggie Bush

Reggie Bush

The most recognizable, non-Black Hollywood personality who’s still known for her special physical assets says she expects an eventual proposal of marriage from NFL star Reggie Bush. Kim Kardashian tells an LA radio show hosted by “American Idol’s” Ryan Seacrest that she’s preparing for a wedding to Bush, who’s been dating her for about a year, though they’re not yet engaged. She’s planning ahead, she says, so that “whenever I get asked, there won’t be any drama.” Wonder if Reg knows he’s going to be asking.

New NBA franchise will choose from six options. The team formerly known as the Seattle SuperSonics has moved to Oklahoma City and needs a new ID. The NBA has filed for trademark rights to six nicknames for the Oklahoma City franchise: Barons, Bison, Energy, Marshalls , Thunder and Wind. The NBA and the team have refused to discuss possible new names publicly, until an official announcement is made. The league assigned Oklahoma City the former Seattle franchise that has boasted superstars such as Shawn Kemp and Ray Allen, after a court case resulted in the Sonics’ release from their agreement with Seattle ’s KeyArena.
