Much of the nation was in shock when Meghan Williams, then a 20-year-old Black woman from West Virginia was gang raped and tortured by seven whites.
She said she was made to drink water from a toilet and had her hair pulled out from the roots.
Civil rights leaders called for swift action. Prosecutors quickly jumped into action as six people are in jail for their crimes. Too bad that they’re innocent.
Williams said she made the story up to get back at her abusive boyfriend.
To be fair prosecutors said other evidence, than Williams testimony led to their convictions.

BET.com News reports a study that states one out of four black males who drop out of high school will be incarcerated or institutionalized at some point in their lives.
According to a study conducted on national high school dropout rates by Northeastern University.
In the past kids who dropped out could find low-wage work. However the combination of the recession combined with a lack of jobs often forces dropouts into criminal activity.
Just a reminder of what many of us know, an education is a very valuable thing to have.

DNA Frees Black Alleged Rapist After 23 Years A Black Texas man sent to prison 23 years ago for rape, is now a free man, cleared by DNA evidence proving that he never sexually assaulted anybody. Jerry Evans is the 20th Dallas man to be freed, thanks to science not available at the time of his conviction. “I knew it would come one day. I just didn’t know it was gonna be 23 years,” Evans said. Judge Thompson told Evans, who began his sentenced in March 1986, “On behalf of the citizens of the State of Texas, the court would like to apologize for the wrong that’s been done to you in this case.” Public Defender Michelle Moore attributes her client’s conviction to overzealous, perhaps even corrupt, police work. “The more that we know about the case, the more convinced I am that what was in the police report, the timeframe, is not what really happened,” she said. Dallas Co. District Attorney Craig Watkins, who has seen his share of overturned sentences, said this is a chance for the state to reexamine the process for sending people to prison. “This is an opportunity, with the 20th exoneration, for us to really, really, take a close look at what we’ve been doing for years and correct the mistakes of the past,” he said. Meanwhile, DNA evidence also confirmed that Vincent Draper, another man convicted and sentenced in Dallas County, did indeed sexually assault an 8-year-old child 24 years ago. Judge Carter Thompson ruled that he must remain in prison.

Store owner could face life in prison. A 69-year-old shop owner will appear in court March 3 after he allegedly shot a man for peeing on his building. Leroy Moon, who runs Detroit’s Asian Fisheries, is charged with killing Shawn Johnson, 36, early this week. Johnson, an elementary school janitor, apparently stopped outside Moon’s business about 7 p.m. When Johnson began relieving himself, Moon reportedly told him to stop and called for another man to bring a gun. Johnson is said to have walked off Moon’s property, while still urinating, when Moon pushed him and then shot. Neighbors say the business owner’s alleged behavior is out of his character, and that he has even given food to the neighborhood needy.
TMZ says Rihanna photo was legally obtained. A popular TV show and celebrity news Web site obtained a controversial photo without breaking the law, producers say. While Los Angeles Police investigated how a head shot of singer Rihanna wound up on TMZ’s Web site Thursday, the companion Fox show broadcast the image again Friday evening. Rihanna is shown with her eyes closed, bruised and beaten in the face, after she was allegedly attacked by her romantic associate Chris Brown on the night of the Grammy Awards. But the LAPD says it would never release a photo of a domestic violence victim and wants to know how TMZ got the image. TMZ posted the Web photo under the caption “Rihanna – The Face of a Battered Woman.” The show’s and site’s main producer, Harvey Levin, is a lawyer.

Levert death could prompt a change in jail policy. The city of Cleveland, prompted by the death of R&B singer Sean Levert, has proposed changes in jail policy that could make it easier for inmates to get their psych medication. Levert, a member of the LeVert trio and son of O’Jays singer Eddie Levert, died in late March after getting sick at Cleveland’s Cuyahoga County Jail. His widow, Angela Lowe, is suing the city, arguing that her husband died because he was denied his Xanax anti-anxiety medication. He had his medication at the time he was booked into the jail for neglecting to pay child support. Under the new proposal by the jail administrator and jail doctor, inmates will be allowed to get their meds as soon as their prescriptions are verified, The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

The Judge puts a leash on DMX. It’s clear that the judge doesn’t trust DMX. The rapper was back in an Arizona slammer Monday after being extradited from Florida to stand trial on multiple charges. The judge slapped him with a $120,000 cash bond, saying the oft-AWOL DMX (whose real name is Earl Simmons) is a flight risk. The judge issued a bench warrant for Simmons’ arrest earlier this month after he missed a scheduled appearance in Maricopa County Court to answer charges of animal cruelty, drug possession, and ID theft. He was arrested at his home near Miami. Police had been tipped off about his whereabouts.
