Attempted bank thief causes woman’s heart attack. A 20-year-old North Carolina man is charged with murder, though he probably never even touched the victim. Larry Whitfield allegedly barged into the home of an elderly woman, causing her to have a heart attack, after he ran from police. Whitfield and a partner in crime advertised their plan to rob a bank by pulling out their rifles this week as they approached the doors of Fort Financial Credit Union. But Fort Financial locked its doors, leaving Whitfield and his accomplice stuck outside. Cops were called and when the getaway car crashed, Whitfield burst in on Mary Parnell, 79, hoping to hide there. He reportedly told Parnell he didn’t want to hurt her, ordering her to sit in a bedroom chair. But the fear she experienced apparently caused her death from cardiac arrest. Whitfield was later arrested and is being held without bail. The prosecutor in his case says kidnapping, robbery and other crimes don’t have to involve violence to result in homicide charges.

Robbers snuff out a mother of eight. The thugs who shot to death a 36-year-old woman last week outside an Atlanta check-cashing store last week couldn’t have know they were snuffing out the life of a mother of eight children and a grandmother who had gone back to school to earn a degree. Nicknamed “Step,” Stephanie Seabrum was shot to death early Saturday after two robbers shot her in the chest while her fiancé waited for her in a nearby car, police said. “They took a beautiful person and messed up a lot of people’s hearts,” said the slain woman’s mother, Sharon Seabrum, 52. “I’m praying for somebody to be caught. This was senseless.” Sharon Seabrum described her daughter as a happy woman with a big smile and a bubbly personality. She “always greeted you with a hug and a kiss,” Sharon Seabrum said. Step had told her mother that she wanted 10 kids, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. “I told her to go ahead: You only got two more to go,” said Sharon Seabrum, who will take custody of four of the children and the grandchild. The other four children will be cared for by others, the newspaper reports.

Jury selection begins in the football legend’s second major criminal trial

For the second time, a criminal jury is being assembled to determine the fate of ex-football star O.J. Simpson. The Heisman Trophy-winner faces possible prison in connection with his alleged robbery of two memorabilia collectors who he said stole valuables connected with his sports career. Simpson is also charged with kidnapping in the year-old incident at a Las Vegas hotel, where he and several men allegedly barged into the collectors’ room, reportedly held them against their will and seized thousands of dollars in souvenirs. Jury selection in the case is expected to take about a week. Simpson’s co-defendant C.J. Stewart is the only other remaining suspect to face trial in the episode after several others struck pleas and agreed to testify against Simpson. Judge Jackie Glass on Monday rejected a request by Simpson’s lawyers to ask potential jurors if they considered Simpson a murderer, despite his acquittal in the death of his wife and her friend in 1994.
