Sex can be dangerous for people with heart conditions, a new study shows. Although the chances of someone keeling over from sex is rare, it does trigger heart attacks on occasion, particularly with men, according to a 1996 study by Harvard Medical School researchers. Thus, the researchers say, if you have cardiovascular disease, or even if it runs in your family, it’s important to ask your doctor what type of sexual activity is safe. For instance, if you’ve recently suffered a heart attack, it’s a good idea to wait three to four weeks before having intercourse, current guidelines suggest. If you have heart failure, your doctor may recommend that you avoid lying on your back during sex, because fluid is more likely to pool in your lungs in that position. “The physical danger posed by sexual activity is probably the least of your problems, however,” writes Ray Hainer of CNN.com. “There are plenty of other ways for heart disease to curtail your sex life. Everything from incision pain following bypass surgery to the emotional stress of living with a heart condition can get in the way of intimacy.” He says that sexual activity and heart conditions often interact in complicated ways. The problem is exacerbated, he says, because heart patients (and their partners) are often uncomfortable discussing their sex lives with their doctors, and vice versa. “I’ve found that most doctors don’t have the time– or the personality– to talk about sex with their heart patients,” says Dr. Edward Chapunoff, a cardiologist in private practice in Pompano Beach, Florida, and the author of “Answering Your Questions About Heart Disease and Sex.” He said, “They are evasive about it. They won’t bring it up themselves and even if the patient brings it up, a doctor might be hesitant to discuss it.”

Children who watch racy TV have sex earlier. Exposure to some forms of TV leads teens who watch sexy programs into early pregnancies and children who play violent video games to adopt aggressive behavior, researchers said on Monday. The three-year study by the RAND research organization is the first to link viewing of racy television programming with risky sexual behavior by teens. “Our findings suggest that television may play a significant role in the high rates of teenage pregnancy in the United States,” said Anita Chandra, a behavioral scientist who led the research at RAND, a nonprofit research organization. “We’re not saying we’re establishing causation, but we are saying this is one factor that we were able to prospectively link to the teen pregnancy outcome,” Chandra said in a phone interview with the Reuters news organization. Teen pregnancy rates in the United States have dropped sharply since 1991 but remain high compared to other industrialized nations. Nearly 1 million girls between 15 and 19 years old, or about 20 percent of sexually active females in that age group, become pregnant yearly. Most of the pregnancies were unplanned, the report said. “Television is just one part of a teenager’s media diet that helps to influence their behavior. We should also look at the roles that magazines, the Internet and music play in teens’ reproductive health,” Chandra said, acknowledging still other factors can influence teen sex habits. Living in a two-parent family reduced the chances of a teen getting pregnant or causing a pregnancy. Black teenagers, and those with discipline problems, had higher risks, the report suggests. Researchers also suggested broadcasters provide more realistic portrayals of the consequences of sex and that parents limit their children’s access to sexually explicit programming.

Women are having sexual problems. Forty percent of women said they have sexual problems, but only 12 percent are distressed about it, according to a new study reported by HealthDay. “The good news is that 12 percent is a very different number than 40 percent,” said study author Dr. Jan Shifren, an associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive biology at Harvard Medical School and director of the Vincent Menopause Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, both in Boston. But 12 percent of 83 million U.S. women ages 20 to 65 is still troublesome, researchers said in a related editorial in the November issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology. The research was funded by Boehringer Ingelheim International, maker of flibanserin, a drug for female sexual dysfunction that is currently being tested in clinical trials. The study included almost 32,000 female respondents ages 18 and older. Overall, 43.1 percent of those surveyed reported some kind of sexual problem: 39 percent reported diminished desire; 26 percent reported problems with arousal; and 21 percent expressed problems achieving orgasm. Only 12 percent, however, reported significant personal distress associated with this problem.

Somali militants attack peacekeepers. Somali Islamist militants unleashed an attack on peacekeepers sparking fighting that resulted in the deaths of 17 civilians Wednesday. According to witnesses the violence was ground shaking. “The fighting was so heavy it shook the ground under our feet. Both sides were using heavy artillery – including tanks used by the AU,” said a Somali cameraman, adding that it was the most violent fighting he’d seen between the two forces. The militia, Al-Shaabab, recently stepped up attacks against African Union peacekeepers. Fighting earlier this week killed at least 33 civilians. An AU spokesman accused the militia of trying to draw them into a war, when they are only there to keep peace. They were “intended to draw [AU] into direct armed confrontation with the opposition forces, and therefore appear to be involved directly in the conflict…We refuse to be drawn into this senseless war,” the spokesman, Maj. Barigye Ba-Hoku, said in a statement. Al-Shaabab has also been launching attacks against Ethiopian troops who are in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu helping to stabilize the government. Ever since Somali dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was overthrown in 1991, the government has been unstable.

S.A. couple killed while having sex on a train track. In South Africa, a train ran over and killed two people having sex on the track, reports the BBC. The incident took place late last week at a train station in Kinross. The victims have not been identified yet. The couple apparently had ignored warnings from the train driver as he was getting closer, police spokesman Abie Khoabane told local media. “They continued with their business,” he said. The area was deserted at the time of the accident. The man passed away at the scene of the accident and the woman died at the hospital later. Police are asking for anyone who has relatives that might have recently gone missing to help with their investigation.

Why do Blacks have kidney-rejection issues? A Johns Hopkins research team reports it may have an explanation for at least some of the higher organ-rejection rates seen among Black kidney transplant recipients. In a small study of 50 healthy adult men, half of whom were Black and half of whom were White, researchers found significantly different amounts of certain immune system cells that are associated with kidney rejection, reports Medical News Today. The cells, known as human leukocyte antigen-specific, or HLA-specific B cells, when “sensitized” produce antibodies that have long been thought to be a factor in transplanted kidney rejection, says Andrea Zachary, professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins and lead researcher of the study. Patients become sensitized when exposed to HLA in blood or tissue that is not their own, Zachary says. Sensitized HLA-specific B cells then produce antibodies that attack transplanted organs containing foreign HLA. “Now that we have an accurate way to count these cells, we are able to confirm what we long suspected, that Blacks might have a bigger army of HLA-specific B cells,” says Zachary, who presented her findings at the Congress of the International Transplant Society in Sydney, Australia on Aug. 12. “Knowing that Blacks have an increased number of HLA-specific B cells – which increases their opportunity for antibody-mediated rejection – we may be able to customize treatments for Black recipients to account for these differences and lessen the likelihood that the organ will be rejected,” says Zachary.
Leave that ear wax alone. O.K., those who have a high-gross meter can skip this one, but you might want to pay attention for your ears’ sake. While many people feel they need to remove ear wax – technically a mixture of secretion, hair and dead skin called cerumen – don’t. It is actually protective since it has lubricating and antibacterial properties, said Dr. Peter Roland, an ear specialist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He chaired a panel that released new guidelines Friday from the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Foundation. The guidelines are the first comprehensive clinical recommendations meant to help health-care professionals identify patients with impacted wax and treat them properly. “The conclusion is that the mere presence of ear wax does not require anything,” Roland said. If the ears are functioning, and there is no problem, most people should do nothing. And that includes resisting the urge to use a cotton-tipped swab to clean out the ear, he said. Using a swab can actually drive excess wax in further, he said, and then medical attention is often needed to remove it.

Black girls who smoke pot are far more likely to take sexual risks and to contract sexually transmitted diseases than non-weed-smokers, according to a new study that examines the behavior of young African-American females. Girls who took marijuana had significantly higher rates of STDs than non-marijuana users (32 percent compared to 23 percent), Emory University researchers found after studying marijuana use and self-reported sexual behavior of 439 sexually active African-American females between the ages of 15 and 21. Marijuana users also had more sex partners, riskier sex partners, including a partner just released from jail, and more recent episodes of engaging in vaginal sex, compared to those who did not use marijuana, the study found. “While adolescent African-American females remain a high-risk group for STDs, little research has examined their marijuana use, sexual behaviors and incidence of STD infection,” said study co-author Ralph DiClemente, professor of public health at Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health. “Although no differences in condom use were identified between marijuana users and non-users, results suggest that marijuana users are engaging in sexual acts with riskier partners and under riskier circumstances, and had higher rates of STDs,” DiClemente said. DiClemente and his team did not compare the behavior of Black girls’ using marijuana against White girls or girls of other ethnic groups. However, they recommend STD- and HIV-intervention programs designed for adolescent African-American females that promote condom use as well as emphasize the risks of drug use and STD and HIV infection. These findings are being presented at the International AIDS Conference meeting now in Mexico City.

Guyana passes strict law against sex offenders
It seems like the Caribbean is toughening up on crime as a whole. Last week Jamaica’s prime minister introduced tougher penalties for gun crimes. Now, Guyana lawmakers just passed legislation that requires people convicted of certain sexual offenses (such as molestation, rape, sexual exploitation and prostitution) to face being supervised by the police for the rest of their lives, even after they have completed their sentences, reports the BBC. Also under the new law, those convicted of armed robbery, domestic violence and hijacking, would be supervised by police for a mandatory three years after serving their sentence. Members of the opposition in the nation’s Parliament supported the law in general but were also concerned that it allowed for the prime minister to add or remove offenses without consulting the governing body first.

Rebels Attack Two Nigerian oil pipelines
A Nigerian rebel group took responsibility for damaging two oil pipelines in southern Nigeria, reports CNN. About the attack, the group Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), said “detonation engineers backed by heavily armed fighters” caused damage to the pipelines early Monday morning. The rebels believe that the pipelines, located in two different cities, are the property of Shell Petroleum Development Company. And Shell has confirmed damage to at least one of its pipelines in the country. “We are working to ascertain the extent of the damage and have shut in some production to limit the amount of crude that will spill into the environment,” Caroline Wittgen, a Shell spokeswoman said. Nigeria is one of the United States’ major oil suppliers, and the rebel attacks on oil pipelines in the nation have led to the rise in crude oil prices. The recent attacks have cut the region’s oil production by 10 percent. “Anytime a pipeline is affected, anytime any production gets shut down, you see oil prices jump up one or two dollars a barrel just because there is no slack in the system,” Jim LeCamp, senior vice president with RBC Wealth Management ( a company that works with wealthy clients internationally) told CNN. Since 2006, MEND has made it a point to attack big foreign oil companies – by bombing pipelines or kidnapping foreign oil employees for ransom – because they believe the oil wealth should be shared with the mostly poor citizens of the Niger Delta region. More than 70 percent of natives in the oil-rich area get paid less that a dollar each day.

British tabloids are reporting that New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez was caught on hidden video camera in a Big Apple apartment where he and singer Madonna allegedly met for sexual encounters. An unidentified man is reported to have contacted Madonna’s lawyers claiming to have the footage. The singer’s reps say they’re aware of his claim, but have no comment. A-Rod has been linked to Madonna for weeks with many speculating that the top-salaried slugger’s marriage suffered because of it. Rodriguez’ wife recently filed for divorce from him, alleging infidelity.

The hot topic in the Motor City right now is whether the judge in Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s perjury trial will release hundreds of steamy text messages he allegedly sent to his chief of staff, with whom he allegedly had a longtime extramarital affair. On one side of the debate are prosecutors, who believe the high-tech love notes will prove that Kilpatrick not only lied about dating Christine Beatty, his former aid, but that he had many extramarital affairs. On the other, are lawyers for the so-called “Hip-hop Mayor” and his purported love interest, who was forced to resign from her $143,000-a-year gig after The Detroit Free Press published excerpts of messages from her pager in January. But it could be nearly two weeks before Municipal Judge Ronald Giles releases any of the hundreds of text messages to the public. And even after they are released, the question is whether the public will see anything new, says Giles, who will make his ruling on July 25. Herschel Fink, a Free Press lawyer who has argued for the messages’ release, said Tuesday, “I’m hoping the judge is going to stick to his guns and release it and the public can make its own decision.” James Thomas, Kilpatrick’s attorney, says there is no proof who actually typed the messages into Beatty’s city-issued pagers, the Free Press reports. He also rebutted the notion that Kilpatrick’s very public apology to his wife, Carla Kilpatrick, after the story hit the front page, was not evidence of illicit activity by the mayor, according to the newspaper. “His apology was heartfelt and related to family issues,” Thomas said. “Certainly they cannot be held as admissions” of guilt.
