SPORTS: Serena Advances in the Sony Open

April 3rd, 2009

Serena Williams is still No. 1 in the world after beating sister Venus 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the semifinals of the Sony Ericsson Open Thursday night. “Even though she’s my sister, I’m still here to win,” said Venus, of their 20th encounter (which they’ve split). “I can’t give anyone anything. So I’m disappointed that I lost tonight, whether or not she kept the ranking or not.” If Serena had lost, she would have lost her top ranking to Dinara Safina, who’s in the second spot. After jumping to a 4-1 lead in the last set, breaking Venus’ serve for the sixth time last night, the game was hers. On Saturday, she will face Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, a 19-year-old, who beat Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Azarenka is the one who got sick in a game against Serena in a fourth-round match at the Australian Open in January.
