Sports: “The Contender” Premiers on Versus Channel; Site Could Become Sports Museum, if Price is Right

October 8th, 2008

“The Contender” premiers on Versus channel. Ex-title-holders like Darnell “Ding-A-Ling Man” Wilson will be among 16 competitors in this year’s returning season of boxing reality show “The Contender.” The fighting tournament moves from ESPN to the Versus channel cable outlet and finds former champ and host “Sugar” Ray Leonard replaced by actor Tony Danza. The show is set to premier on Versus in December with the final elimination match in February. “Ding-A-Ling Man,” by the way, is presumably a reference to Wilson’s response to the bell – and nothing else.

Site could become sports museum, if price is right. The legacies of ex-Detroit Tiger greats like “Sweet” Lou Whitaker and Cecil Fielder could be preserved forever in a sports museum if a group of historical preservationists has its way. Detroit City Council voted 5-3 on Tuesday to hold up the demolition of Tiger Stadium’s remaining corner after most of it met a wrecking ball in June. The Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy must pay the city $219,000 in order to prevent complete demolition of the decaying structure and pursue plans to open a museum at the site. The Tigers have relocated to Comerica Park where they play home games.
