Health: CNN Star Backs Out of Surgeon General Contention

 CNN medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta has withdrawn his name from contention for U.S. Surgeon General, Obama administration officials said Thursday. “We know he will continue to serve and educate the public through his work with media and in the medical arena,” said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of nominations. Gupta, 39, a neurosurgeon, was President Barack Obama’s first pick for the job. Read the rest.

TV News Personality Could Be Next Surgeon General

 President-elect Barack Obama is leaning toward 40-year-old CNN medical reporter Sanjay Gupta to be the nation’s next surgeon general, the cable news network acknowledged Tuesday. Gupta, who hosts “House Call” on CNN, is an assistant professor of neurosurgery at the Emory University School of Medicine and associate chief of the neurosurgery service at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
