February 17th, 2009

Facebook

School calls foul on Web site statements. A Grand Rapids, Mich. college student is seeking re-admission to school after he was suspended over a Facebook entry. Tony Harris denies having made sexually explicit statements about his ex-girlfriend on the popular social networking Web site. The student says he believes his ex stole his password and used the plot to deliberately cause him problems at Calvin College. Harris is accused of sexual harassment, libel and violation of Calvin’s “responsible use of technology” policy. He says he’ll seek legal subpoenas to get Facebook usage records that may exonerate him. Otherwise, Harris can’t attend the Christian school again for, at least, a year.

November 29th, 2008

Stephon Marbury

The New York Knicks says it needed Stephon Marbury to play and he said “no.” Because of that, the franchise says it is docking the point guard’s salary by  nearly $400,000 and suspending him. Marbury denies the charge and says he will appeal but his tenure with the Knicks might be gets to officially challenges his employer’s decision.  The New York Post reports Knicks president Donnie Walsh and players’ association lawyer Hal Biagas are set to meet Monday to try and reach a buyout agreement.Of course I want something resolved,” Marbury told the paper. “I want to go forward.” The Knicks has not given the details of the conversation that took place before Wednesday’s loss in Detroit but says Marbury was asked to play because the Knicks were short-handed.”I don’t want to get into it, guys. I think I already told you, I asked him to play. We just asked. You’re a coach, and we needed him to play,” says Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni said after practice Friday. Marbury will not be paid when he sits out Saturday’s home game against Golden State and will lose an additional game’s pay for Wednesday’s actions. He earns about $21 million in salary this year, drawing about $190,000 a game.

Sports: Parker, Leslie Suspended One Game For Fight; Serena Williams One of Five Top-Paid Lady Athletes; British Olympian’s Elderly Relative Chases Down Thief

July 25th, 2008

Parker and Leslie suspended one game for fight
Despite a nasty brawl between the Los Angeles Sparks and Detroit Shock, the WNBA was pretty lenient, as Sparks stars Candace Parker and Lisa Leslie received a one-game suspension. Which player was suspended for four games? Playa Hater has the latest.

British Olympian’s elderly relative chases down thief
Pearline Williamson must’ve been something to fear when carrying a switch. The 78-year-old grand “mum” – what moms are called in Britain – of Simeon Williamson recently chased down a woman described as being in her early 20s after the woman snatched Williamson’s purse. When the thief denied having taken the pocketbook, witnesses say Williamson shook her until she dropped it and fled. Maybe it’s no surprise that Simeon Williamson stays with his grandmother when training at an athletic center near her home. He’ll compete in the 100-meter race at Beijing.

Serena Williams is one of the five top-paid lady athletes.
Serena Williams joins NASCAR racer Danica Patrick, golfer Michelle Wie and others on Forbes magazine’s list of the five highest-paid lady athletes. Williams earned about $14 million from June 2007 to June 2008, the publication reports. Williams’ sister, Wimbledon champion Venus Williams, also made the top 10. Actual salary disparities between male and female athletes balance out in the area of product endorsements, where women increase their earning power, Forbes reports.
