Economists: Tiger’s Trysts Cost Shareholders Billions

December 30th, 2009

woods

As Tiger Woods pays the price with his wife, family and career for his infidelity, stockholders in Woods’ sponsored companies such as AT&T and Gillette have  at least 12 billion.

A study by Victor Stango and Christopher Knittel, two economy and  professors at the University of California, suggests that companies who have a business relationship with Woods have seen their stock shares plummet since the Woods scandal broke out in November.

From Reuters.com

“In their study, the two professors said they looked at stock market returns for the 13 trading days after November 27, the date of the car incident that ignited the Woods scandal.

They compared returns for Woods’ sponsors during this period to those of both the total stock market and of each sponsor’s closest competitor. They also reviewed returns for four years before the car accident to build up a comparative picture of the sponsors’ market performance.

The study looked at sponsors of Tiger Woods for which stock prices were available, in several cases through quoted prices for the parent companies. Sponsors included: Accenture; AT&T; Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf (Electronic Arts); Gillette (Proctor and Gamble); Nike; Gatorade (PepsiCo); TLC Laser Eye Centers.”

Gatorade and Tiger Woods are ending their endorsement  relationship.

From USAToday.com

The first dent in Tiger Woods’ gold-plated endorsement portfolio appeared Tuesday as Gatorade said it was dropping its Woods-themed line of sports drinks. It remains to be seen if the world’s richest, most famous athlete permanently damaged his brand image, as well as his SUV, when he crashed into a tree outside a neighbor’s home on Nov. 27.

The current endorsement king of Madison Avenue makes most of his estimated $100 million a year off the course. Among his blue-chip sponsors: Gatorade, AT&T, Nike, Gillette, Accenture, EA Sports, Upper Deck and Tag Heuer.

Gatorade said the decision to drop Woods has nothing to do with recent events.

November 30th, 2009

Golf star Tiger Woods says there is no truth to the rumors of infidelity to his wife, nor did she chase him out of the house to cause his bizarre crash on Friday.

Woods crashed his SUV into a fire hydrant and tree while leaving his home at 2am Friday morning.  Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, according to law enforcement officials.

Woods canceled his scheduled interview with police to discuss the incident.  Under Florida law, he is not required to talk to police about the incident.
