Usain Bolts to Record 100 Meters
Jamaican Olympic champion sprinter Usain Bolt logged a Mercurial 9.58 seconds in the 100 meters in Berlin Sunday to surpass the 9.69 he set in winning gold at the Beijing Games last year. Former world record-holder Asafa Powell clinched a second medal for Jamaica as he finished third in 9.84. “I was feeling good after the semis. I knew it was going to be a great race and I executed it,” Bolt, 22, told reporters. “It’s a great time, a great feeling. I feel good in myself and I knew I could do it. There was a big build-up, great atmosphere. It wasn’t going to be an easy race but I had a perfect start and just went from there. I came out here to do my best, and I did what I had to do. There’ll be no partying for me ahead of Tuesday. I’ll rest up as always, I need to rest up for the 200 meters.” Defending 100-meter champ, American Tyson Gay, finished second in 9.71 seconds, third fastest time ever and 6/100ths better than his previous personal best. “I ran the best I could. I just wanted to give my best tonight, it wasn’t enough but I’m happy to have the national record,” he said. “I knew I had to put out a championship performance. I gave it my best and that’s all I could do.”
Korean Upsets Tiger
In perhaps the biggest upset in professional golfing history, Korea’s Y.E. Yang came from behind to yank the 91st PGA Championship from world’s No. 1 player, defeating Tiger Woods in a suspenseful finish at Hazeltine National. It was a nail-biter, indeed. The 37-year-old Yang, ranked 110th, clearly understood what a tremendous upset it was to beat the world’s top golfer. “This might be my last win as a golfer,” said Yang, “but it sure is a great day. It means the world right now.” With the come-from-behind victory, Yang deprived Woods of his 15th major. It also keeps the Tiger from Jack Nicklaus’s 18 by the end of next year. Prior to Sunday, Woods had never lost a major after starting the final round with the lead. “I played well enough to win the championship,” Woods said. “I did not putt well enough to win the championship today. I didn’t get it done on the greens, and consequently, I didn’t win the tournament.”

The PGA will fine Tiger Woods for remarks he made about a rules official following his victory at the Bridgestone Invitational. After defeating Padriag Harrinton by four shots Sunday, Woods said he told his rival, “I’m sorry that John got in the way of a great battle.” He was referring to European Tour chief referee John Paramor, who warned Woods and Harrington they were being timed. Woods was perturbed that he was put on the clock at the par-5 16th hole. Harrington rushed three difficult shots that led to a triple bogey as a result, Woods said. “I don’t think that Paddy would have hit the pitch shot that way if he was able to take his time, look at it, analyze it,” Woods said. “But he was on the clock, had to get up there quickly and hit it.” Harrington conceded he was rushed, although he said it would be unfair to give the final group preferential treatment.

Tiger Woods rolled to a final-round 65 for his 70th PGA Tour victory Sunday, placing him third on the all-time wins list, behind Jack Nicklaus (73) and Sam Snead (82). The victory marked his seventh at Firestone Country Club’s South Course, and he became the first time a player to win that many times at a single PGA Tour venue. It was also his second consecutive win. “I had a situation where the wind was in my favor, and I hit a good shot in,” Woods said of his highlight-reel approach on 16, where he had pulled his tee shot into the trees and was forced to pitch out sideways. “It carried far enough. I was surprised it spun back that much considering it was downwind.”

It will be his last victory at Warwick Hills. The tournament’s sponsor, General Motors, has announced that it would bring to an end the PGA Tour’s longest partnership, The Associated Press reported. The Greenbrier in West Virginia will replace the Buick Open in 2010, GolfWeek magazine reports.

Hunter Mahan made an astonishing run at the world’s most dominant golfer Sunday, shooting a 62 to end 12-under, but in the end, Tiger Woods prevailed, shooting a final-round 67 to edge Mahan by one stroke and Anthony Kim by four in the AT&T National in Bethesda, Md. The victory was Woods’ 68th career win. “Hopefully I can play like I did this week and continue to build next week,” Woods said. Kim actually broke the course record with his amazing 62 in the first round, but on Friday morning Woods snatched it all back with a 66 as Kim could muster up only a measly 70 in the afternoon. “I’m not out here to watch Tiger,” Kim said when asked about Woods’s round. “I didn’t pay $30 to come out. I know he’s obviously the best player in the world. We’re all out here trying to beat everyone’s brains out.” Strong words from a talented young player, but not powerful enough to fell the No. 1 player. On Sunday, Woods seemed to do everything right, rolling in a 20-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole for the winning margin.

Tiger Woods Silences Critics
For those who thought Tiger was washed up after undergoing knee surgery last year, think again. In winning his second PGA tournament this year since returning to the circuit, Woods nailed seven birdies, an astonishing eagle and a couple bogeys Sunday at Muirfield Village Golf Club. But, what really has people talking is the way Woods performed throughout the week, hitting 49 of 56 fairways, matching his illustrious performance at the 1998 Masters. “I tried not to watch him, but it’s hard not to,” said Michael Letzig, who started off Sunday tied with Woods, 4 shots back, and ended up tied for 14th. “Some of the shots are just unreal. … He’s a lot better than everybody else. It’s tough because it’s golf to us. The way he plays, the way he hits his irons … it’s unreal.” Woods finished with a final round 65 to take a one-stroke victory over Jim Furyk.

Obama Has a Sporty Monday
You might call Monday “Sports Day” for President Barack Obama, who spent time entertaining everybody from golf great Tiger Woods to members of the Chicago White Sox, his favorite sports team. They were in D.C. to play the Baltimore Orioles. Woods was also in Washington and presidential staffers invited him to drop by the White House for some idle chit-chat. President Obama, who occasionally plays golf, greeted Woods in the Oval Office; the rest of the White House tour was conducted by Marvin Nicholson, an Obama aide who once caddied at the Augusta course, where Woods tied for sixth place at the Master’s this year.

Mike Brown is NBA Coach of the Year
Cleveland Cavs Coach Mike Brown was named the Coach of the Year, the second time in two years that an African American was granted the prestigious honor. Brown has taken Cleveland to the postseason in each of his four seasons, and his team’s 66 wins – the greatest regular-season win total in franchise history – a Central Division title and the No. 1 overall playoff seed. “If they did not want me to coach them, I wouldn’t be able to coach them,” Brown said with James and the other Cavaliers standing behind him as he accepted the Red Auerbach trophy. “I look at this as a partnership. Yes, my name is on this, but this is the ultimate team award from a coaching standpoint. I haven’t put on a uniform or done anything out on the floor. The players have done it all. The coaching staff has done a lot and when you win an award like this, you can’t do it by yourself. You have some great people around you.” James, who many expect will be named the league MVP, said that Brown has flown under the radar because of James’ flamboyance as a super star. “That was the main reason,” James said. “But that doesn’t take away from the fact that we still have to go out there and play for him and abide by his system. There are a lot of teams with great talent, but that doesn’t automatically qualify you as a good coach or give you wins. It just showed this year how good of a coach he is.”

Woods Loses Bid for Fourth Green Jacket
The final hour of the 2009 Masters at Augusta National Sunday provided just the fireworks that the event needed to shatter its reputation as a lackluster tournament with few exciting highlights. But, it was the undercard that stole the show, as Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods battled it out in a final round of a major for the first time in eight years. Mickelson tied a Masters record with a 30 on the front nine to get into contention, but Woods caught him with three birdies over the next four holes and put the crowd of thousands on the edge of the green. Sadly, however, the tourney ended with far less fanfare as Mickelson faded, settling for a 67 and leaving him five strokes off the lead. Woods also fizzled, bogeying the final two holes for a 68 and wrapping up a shot behind Mickelson to finish another shot back. By the time the major ended, Angel Cabrera had become the first Argentine to win the green jacket at Augusta National.
Bolt Blew Herb as a Kid, Paper Says World-record-holding sprinter Usain Bolt smoked dope as a youngster, he told a publication Sunday. “In Jamaica, you learn as a child how to roll a joint. Everyone here has tried it. I did too – but I was real young then,” Bolt was quoted by the online publication Bild. “My family and my friends don’t smoke and I don’t hang out any longer with people who smoke.” Three-time Olympic gold medalist, who set world records in the 100 and 200 meters at the Beijing Olympics and was part of the Jamaican team that broke the world mark in the 400-meter relay, made the admission in an interview published online Sunday. One of Bild’s reporters says he met Bolt at a disco in Kingston, Jamaica, and that the sprinter drank Guinness mixed with Red Bull.

In his first major since the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines last June, Tiger Woods returned to compete for his fourth green jacket at the 2009 Masters at Augusta National. By day’s end on Thursday, Woods had missed his target of breaking 70 for the first time in the opening round of the Masters and trailed leader Chad Campbell (65) by five shots. “I knew [the course] could be had with good shots,” said Woods. “Basically I was in position to shoot four-under. I just didn’t get it done.” On the 18th hole, Woods hit a closing bogey that ended his chance at under 70. “I had good pace, just didn’t make any putts,” he said. “I was hitting putts on my line, just got to read them a little bit better. If I hit bad putts it would be a totally different deal, but I hit good putts.”

Woods Brings Excitement Back to Golf
The PGA must be ecstatic that Tiger Woods is back after a nine-month vacation from the circuit to mend from knee surgery. The golf great’s victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Sunday produced the highest overnight television golf rating since the U.S. Open. Woods made up a five-shot deficit Sunday at Bay Hill, defeating Sean O’Hair with a birdie on the last hole. NBC Sports says the final round drew a 4.9 overnight rating with a 10 share. According to Nielsen Media Research, that’s the highest rating of any golf tournament since the U.S. Open in June. Woods won that tournament in a playoff.
