Atlanta Police have finally identified a robbery suspect they shot dead four days before Christmas. Police say that 44-year-old Carlos Stringer of Riverdale is the man who marked the third shooting by Atlanta officers in just four days. Two of those victims died from their wounds. All of the men shot by police had been confronted during robberies, according to the department. For example, on Dec. 18, officers exchanged gunfire with an armed man police said was running from a house in northwest Atlanta that he had just tried to rob. No one was injured, and the suspect was taken into custody. A day later, an Atlanta police officer shot and killed a man who allegedly kidnapped and tried to rob a pedestrian and was being pursued by a patrol car in northeast Atlanta. Two days after that, Stringer was shot to death while he and another man were running from a Dollar General Store. Police say an officer confronted the men and ordered them to freeze. Stringer was shot in the head and the other man escaped. All three shootings are still being investigated.

Alleged victim in Simpson case testifies after health scare.
Having recovered from an apparent health issue that interrupted his Monday testimony, an alleged victim of robbery by O.J. Simpson testified Tuesday that a gun was mentioned. Bruce Fromong claims he heard someone being told to put a gun away last September when Simpson and alleged accomplices reportedly took valuables from Fromong’s hotel room. Simpson and Clarence Stewart are accused of robbing and kidnapping Fromong and his partner after Simpson claimed that he took back valuables from his football career that had been stolen. Simpson allegedly led Stewart and four others, who’ve since taken plea deals, in a heist that could lead to his spending the rest of his life in prison. Fromong had clutched his chest and left the witness stand without finishing his testimony Monday, apparently having respiratory difficulty. Tuesday, he broke down emotionally while describing how Simpson had called to wish his mom a happy birthday at a time when the pair were friends.

An NBA vet is investigated by the FBI on suspicion of fraud
A Detroit Pistons player is under investigation by the FBI and officials in Wayne County, Michigan for his role in possibly fraudulent deals on two or more homes. Lindsey Hunter’s believed to be a victim by county investigators, but the long-time NBA guard is reportedly the main focus of the federal probe, in which Hunter’s company allegedly swindled a boiler operator. Bruce McClellan says he was tricked into buying a $1.25 million home by people claiming to represent Hunter’s company, though McClellan only earns about $35,000 a year. Says Hunter’s lawyer Deano Ware: “While we are unable to comment on the specific facts involved in this matter because of the likelihood of potential litigation, Mr. Hunter emphatically denies any involvement in any wrongdoing on the part of other members of L&I Enterprises, Inc. Mr. Hunter was strictly a silent partner of L&I Enterprises, Inc., who relied upon representations made to him by individuals he believed in and trusted. He subsequently discovered the representations to be untrue. Immediately upon doing so, Mr. Hunter terminated any and all dealings he had with those individuals and L&I Enterprises, Inc.”

Judge rules in Kwame Kilpatrick’s favor this time around

Embattled Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick remains free after facing the same judge on Tuesday who ordered him to jail last week on a bond violation. A Detroit news outlet had published a photo of Kilpatrick at his mother’s home at the same time that his sister visited the house, raising questions of whether his presence there violated court restrictions. Money for MLK Memorial pours in.

The money keeps on pouring in for the historic Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial in Washington, D.C. On Tuesday, organizers announced that donors, including $3 million from Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, had compelled them to raise the fundraising goal from $100 million to $120 million. Contributions for the memorial, which will be built on the National Mall, already has reached $99 million, according to Harry E. Johnson, Sr., president of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, the private group in charge of the effort. So why the new money goal? There are “a number of variables,” including changes in the structural plan, the addition of a bookstore and security costs as well as inflation for the rising cost estimate, Johnson says. After a stormy past few months over the design of the 28-foot statue of King, to be sculpted by Chinese artist Lei Yixin, the project appears on a positive track. Still, the project must win final approval for all aspects of the memorial site before construction can begin. The memorial is expected to take about 18-20 months to complete.

The Muslim native of Uzbekistan, who was shot repeatedly while pumping gas at a Cleveland gas station, left the hospital Monday, nearly eight weeks after the tragic episode was captured on videotape. Police have been investigating the incident as a hate crime. As he left the MetroHealth Medical Center, 49-year-old Fazliddin Yakubov offered “a million, million thanks” for all the support he has received, The Plain Dealer newspaper reported Tuesday. He had been shot three times in the abdomen while his son was pumping gas. The video led to the arrest of 18-year-old William Neal of Cleveland, who’s charged with felonious assault and attempted murder. He’s being held in a Cuyahoga County jail on $250,000 bond.
