Nigerians Hit the Streets in Protest

May 14th, 2009

Thousands of heated Nigerians hit the streets of the capital Wednesday in protest of a government they say is doing a horrible job. The rising gas prices, slow election reform and low minimum wages (currently at around $38 a month) were among the issues being protested against. While there was plenty of security forces on the protest route, more and more joined the march as the crowd moved down the street. “Commercial drivers and motorcycle taxi operators are leaving their work and joining the protest,” said a BBC correspondent. More protests, by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), are planned Friday, but the government pleaded with the group to go back to negotiations instead, fearing the protests could “cause chaos,” reports the BBC. In addition to the country’s oil-rich Niger Delta region later this week, protestors plans to hit several other places across the country. “We are determined to carry these protests to all nooks and crannies of the country. We are not afraid of the government,” NLC President Abdulwaheed Omar told the news service.

Entertainment News: Ne-Yo To Get $700,320 In Lost Wages; Skull Gang crew member denies being robbery victim.

September 4th, 2008

Ne-Yo will receive $700,320 in lost wages.  The controversy over whether R. Kelly booted R&B star Ne-Yo from his January “Double Up” tour because of Ne-Yo’s talent or because of a technicality has ended with a price tag. An L.A. judge has ordered Kelly’s promoter, Rowe Entertainment, to pay Ne-Yo $700,320, in lost wages. Ne-Yo claimed Kelly was hatin’ because audiences were loving Ne-Yo’s opening set, while the promoter said paperwork was an issue – though it seems that fixing the paperwork might have been an obvious remedy. Rowe gave no response to the lawsuit filed under Ne-Yo’s given name, Shaffer Smith. So the producer and performer won by default. And he still gets to call R. Kelly a hater.

Skull Gang crew member denies being robbery victim. Depending on who you believe, the Skull Gang’s Juelz Santana lost an expensive necklace after a promoter evened the score on a debt, or Juelz was just treated rudely. The promoter allegedly lost $70,000 on a gig with Santana’s crew and later caught up with the Gang in the U.K. After reportedly attacking the rapper in his hotel room, but being held back by security, the promoter and his crew allegedly followed Santana to his new overnight spot and snatched the chain. Juelz says he wasn’t robbed, but that there was, indeed, a confrontation. He says the beef was about a gig paid in advance to his former manager, which never took place.
