November 4th, 2009

delonte-west

Delonte West, the starting shooting guard for the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers is in hot water after being indicted on eight counts of carrying and concealing multiple guns while riding a motorcycle in Maryland.

From ESPN.com

West was indicted on two counts of carrying a dangerous weapon, two counts of carrying a handgun, two counts of transporting a handgun, and one count each of reckless driving and negligent driving. The charges are all misdemeanors. Each of the weapons counts carries a penalty of up to three years in prison.

West was initially charged with just two counts of carrying a handgun and with driving in excess of reasonable and prudent speed.

Court records don’t list a lawyer for West. His agent, Noah Croom, did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

West has been treated in the past for bipolar disorder, and last week his wife filed a domestic violence report against him in Ohio. No charges have been filed in that incident.

Police Get Plaxico’s Bloody Pants

December 29th, 2008

Plaxico Burress

When police descended upon the New Jersey home of Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress last week and seized guns and ammunition, they also walked away with the bloody pants that Burress wore when he accidentally shot himself in the bathroom of a nightclub when the gun he was sporting slid down the leg of his sweatpants.  The Associated Press reports that in addition to a 9-mm handgun, a .30-06-caliber rifle and the ammunition, (including a clip for a .45 gun), police also said they recovered the sneakers that Burress wore during the accidental shooting during the three-hour search of the New York Giants receiver’s Totowa home. It is likely that investigators are trying to determine whether the recovered weapons are registered, according to AP. If they are not registered, it is likely that the suspended NFL star will face additional charges, the news agency reports. Benjamin Brafman, the receiver’s criminal attorney, said Wednesday morning that he believed that only a registered rifle was taken from the home.

Katt Williams is Arrested

November 7th, 2008

Katt Williams

Police arrested Comedian Kat Williams this past Thursday on gun charges for weapons found in his vehicle, reports MTV.com.  Police first noticed that Williams’ vehicle, a Cadillac Escalade that was parked along Broadway, had no license plate. They also noticed that there were firearms in the vehicle.  Minutes later, as Williams left a building nearby, police asked him if the Escalade was his.  Williams admitted it was and he was arrested.  Hours later, he posted a $25,000 bond and was released. The comedian was scheduled to perform that night at Carnegie Hall.  He did make his way there, but was extremely late due to the eighteen hours he spent in jail.  Williams apologized to the audience after he arrived, telling them all about what happened that day.

National: A Black Man’s Unfair Sentence is Reversed; Black LAPD Officer Wins $3 Million Judgment; Rev. Jackson: Why Not Bail Out Struggling Homeowners?

September 23rd, 2008

A Black man’s unfair sentence is reversed. An 18-year-old Black man who had been sentenced this summer to 10 years in prison on a drug charge had his term slashed to 10 years’ probation after his lawyers complained that his White co-defendants had been sentenced to probation only. When police busted into a northeast Dallas apartment in June 2006, they found Jonathan Danyell Brown next to a mountain of cocaine, a rifle and a handgun, reports The Dallas Morning News.  Also arrested were Tomie Jean Taylor and her husband, Dennis Earl Hughes, who authorities said leased the apartment, paid the bills and allowed Brown to use as his drug headquarters. Brown, who had dropped out of school to sell drugs, paid the 30-something couple with crack. The trio was facing the same drug-trafficking charge and had similar criminal histories. Prosecutors, however slapped Brown with the additional weapons charge. Get more on the story hereShould the sentence have been reduced?

Black LAPD officer wins $3 million judgment. A jury awarded $3.1 million Monday to a Los Angeles Police officer who was called a “rat” and racial slurs by his superiors and demoted after reporting on alleged misdeeds in his department. The jury believed Robert Hill’s claims that he was subjected to racism and retaliation after reporting that a sergeant possibly embezzled LAPD funds. Hill, a 25-year member of the force, said that the sergeant regularly dissed Blacks and Latinos, at one point saying, “If God loved them, why did he make them Black?” After reporting the incident, Hill said he was told to drop the complaint if he wanted to keep his job. When Hill refused, he was given a much less desirable job, he said in his court papers.  Hill’s attorney told jurors that Hill’s superiors “cooked up this scheme” to punish him for violating the department’s “code of silence.”

Rev. Jackson: Why not bail out struggling homeowners? There is something seriously wrong with a government that would spend $700 billion to bail out Wall Street but ignore homeowners who are fighting to pay their mortgages, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said Saturday. “We must challenge plans that bail out the rich, yet put out the poor and put down the middle class,” said Jackson, who blames the current financial crisis on the Bush administration, the Federal Reserve, the Securities Exchange Commission and congressional oversight committees. “We can’t just bail out Wall Street and ignore Main Street. We must freeze foreclosures, and restructure and modify loans to protect the home equity of people defrauded and victimized by the sub-prime lending schemes.” Read what he wants Congress to do hereWhat do you think of the Bush administration’s plan to bail out Wall Street?

Entertainment News: Lil Wayne To Return To New York To Face Weapons Charges; Will Smith Will Portray Last Pharaoh; Terrence Howard Shushes Crowd During Performance

September 9th, 2008

Lil Wayne will return to New York tomorrow. Having missed an earlier court date on a weapons charge, due to a dental issue, Lil Wayne returns to court tomorrow on a continuance. The rapper took a red-eye flight from Hollywood to New York after his Video Music Awards performance and win for Best Hip-Hop Video, in order to appear Monday. Weezy was arrested last summer after cops stopped his tour bus and searched the vehicle, allegedly finding a .40-caliber pistol. He’s charged with criminal possession of a weapon.

Actor is confirmed to play ancient Egyptian ruler.
Will Smith will portray Last Pharaoh. Will Smith is set to take on one of his most challenging roles in the film The Last Pharaoh. After earlier reports surfaced of his interest in the role about the ancient Egyptian ruler Taharqa, Variety.com confirms that Braveheart writer Randall Wallace is taking on the screenplay at Smith’s behest. Taharqa ruled Egypt from 690 B.C. to 664 B.C. and became known for his fierce battles with Assyrian king Esarhaddon.

Shhhh! Not while he’s trying to sing!
Actor hushes fans at performance. Terrence Howard takes his newfound music career seriously, according to Web reports. The Oscar-nominated actor whose new CD, Shine It Through, was recently released reportedly shushed a couple of fans at his New York performance last week. The star appeared at “The Beat of Chic,” an event for special invited guests at Bloomingdale’s department store, and was reportedly annoyed by the constant chatter of two women in the front row. “Obviously you two are talking about something that’s more important than my music,” Howard is said to have announced. “Why don’t you share it?” After the man who rapped the words “whoop dat trick” in the film Hustle & Flow stuck the mic in their faces, the ladies apparently decided to shut it up. But it’s not only the two front-row spectators who’ve been underwhelmed with Howard’s musical debut: Fan feedback on the CD has been less than favorable.
