U.S. Marine and His Wife Apparently Killed By His Own

November 6th, 2008

Couple murdered

A U.S. Marine and his wife apparently were killed by his own. California authorities are holding four U.S. Marines they say tortured and killed a bi-racial couple from Brooklyn, N.Y., in their San Diego-area home. The Marines apparently served under the command of Brooklyn-raised  Sgt. Jan Pawel Pietrzak, of  Bensonhurst, who, with his wife, Quiana, were found bound and gagged in the ransacked house, each shot in the head execution-style, reports The New York Daily News.  Pietrzak was the suspects’ sergeant at Camp Pendleton, according to Quiana’s mother. Quiana Jenkins-Pietrzak, 26, worked for the county’s Black Infant Care Center. Pietrzak’s mother, Henryka Pietrzak-Varga, said she had prepared herself “for the possibility that my son could die in Iraq.” “But to die like this, in their own home?” she told the News Read the rest here.

Sports: Shaq, Wife Reconcile; U.S. Track Olympians Have A Tough Weekend; Michael Vick’s Estate Suffers As He Serves Time

August 18th, 2008

Shaq cancels plans for divorce

Shaq, Shaunie
Weeks after a Memorial Day weekend photo showed Phoenix Suns center Shaquille O’Neal and his wife Shaunie lounging together on vacation, the couple confirms that they’ll remain together. Shaq filed for divorce last September, calling the marriage “irretrievably broken.” And this spring, he famously rapped about his ex-Laker teammate, saying, “Kobe ratted me out, that’s why I’m gettin’ divorced.” But rumors of Shaq’s infidelity or of Shaunie’s abuse of his paychecks are no longer a factor, Mrs. O’Neal says. “Neither one of us could probably answer why we were getting (divorced) in the first place,” she observes. “Things have been going so great that someone actually had to remind us that ‘Hey, you do remember those papers are still there.’ Literally, it was days ago. So, we’ve agreed that before we leave Florida in a few days we’ll make sure that that’s gone away.”

Michael Vick’s estate suffers as he serves time

Michael Vick

A bankruptcy judge may appoint a trustee to oversee ex-NFL star Michael Vick’s estate while the suspended player serves prison time for financing an illegal dog-fighting ring. A Sept. 5 hearing could determine how the former Falcon’s property will be handled. “It has become clear, since the filing of this case, that Mr. Vick has very limited knowledge of the state of his finances,” wrote bankruptcy Judge Frank Santoro. “…It appears that Mr. Vick has routinely relied upon others to make financial decisions for him, giving them discretionary control over large sums of money.” Vick filed for bankruptcy protection July 7. A former advisor to Vick was recently accused of hustling a church out of $500,000.

U.S. Olympians have a tough weekend in Beijing. The U.S. men’s track and field team had a less than stellar weekend on the track, capped off by Tyson Gay failing to qualify for the 100-meters final. Did the U.S. women fare any better? See more of our coverage at BET.com’s Olympics ‘08.

Pastor Joel Osteen’s Wife Wins In Court

August 15th, 2008

She was accused of roughing up a flight attendantvictoria_osteen_joel_olsteen.jpg

It took a jury just a couple hours Thursday to kick a flight attendant to the curb who had accused the wife of mega-preacher Joel Osteen of assaulting her in a racist rant over a first-class seat. The case centered on Sharon Brown, an African-American attendant with Continental Airlines, who sued Victoria Osteen for $405,000, claiming that Osteen slammed her against a bathroom door, elbowed her in her breast and attempted to storm the cockpit during a December 2005 flight from Houston to Vail, Colo. Brown’s claims were supported by another flight attendant, Maria Johnson, who is White. Johnson testified earlier in the week that she believes race was a factor because Victoria Osteen told her that she did not want to deal with Brown or the other African-American flight attendant during the trip. But the 12 jurors didn’t buy the story, perhaps agreeing more with Victoria Osteen’s attorney, Rusty Hardin, who characterized the charges as nothing more than a money-grab. “I’m glad it’s over,” Victoria Osteen said afterward. “I expected it because it’s the truth and I know the truth always stands firm.” Brown expressed disappointment. “We gave the truth to the jury,” she said. “We are happy we had an opportunity to try our case.” Victoria and Joel Osteen co-pastor the Lakewood Church in Houston, which draws 42,000 each week at a football stadium.

Civil Trial of High-Profile Preacher’s Wife Begins

August 8th, 2008

Victoria Osteen has been charged with causing a ruckus on the plane victoria_osteen_joel_olsteen.jpg

A flight attendant whose psychiatrist says felt “disrespected as a Black woman” is suing the wife of the pastor of one of the nation’s largest evangelical churches, saying she was assaulted on a flight from Houston to Colorado. Sharon Brown is suing Victoria Osteen, who is married to televangelist Joel Osteen, with whom she co-pastors the Lakewood Church in Houston, a converted football stadium that draws some 42,000 members each week. Brown claims that Osteen threw her against a bathroom door and elbowed her in her breast before the start of a flight three years ago, The Associated Press reports. The fracas on the Continental Airlines flight apparently began over a spill about the size of a 50-cent piece on a seat in first class. Osteen allegedly was agitated that the spill wasn’t being cleaned up fast enough. Another flight attendant, Maria Johnson, testified Thursday that Osteen was out of control and corroborated Brown’s claims. “She was demanding that attention be given to her immediately,” Johnson said. Osteen kept saying: “This is ridiculous. I’m a first-class passenger,” Johnson added. She confirmed Brown’s assertion that Osteen was so upset that she tried to force her way into the cockpit. “She took Sharon by the shoulders and pushed her out of the way. Sharon stumbled,” Johnson testified. Johnson, who is White, suggested that race might have been a factor, noting that Osteen only wanted to deal with her and not the other two flight attendants, who are Black. But Rusty Hardin, Victoria Osteen’s attorney, said the lawsuit is all about money. “This is nothing more than an attempted extortion,” Hardin told jurors during opening statements. While admitting that Victoria Osteen is sometimes a “very excitable and expressive person,” Hardin said she was never out of control. AP reports that Brown’s psychiatrist, Shayna Lee, testified that “Brown has suffered depression and post-traumatic stress disorder because of the incident. She also felt disrespected in her role as a leader and as a Black woman, and had her faith affected.” Brown’s attorney, Reginald McKamie, told jurors that Brown was only doing her job. “Sharon was attacked by someone in the community who supposedly represents a higher degree of human decency,” he said. Brown is seeking an apology and 10 percent of Victoria Osteen’s net worth as part of her suit. Is this about money or did Victoria Osteen mess up in a major way?

Entertainment News: Beyoncé’s Skin Spread Seen By Some As Slap; Morgan Freeman’s Companion During Accident Was Reportedly Wife’s Former Friend

August 7th, 2008

Morgan Freeman’s companion during accident was reportedly wife’s former friend
If you wondered who the initially unidentified woman injured along with Morgan Freeman in his recent car wreck was, you weren’t alone. Having denied several weeks ago that he knew anything about his wife Myrna seeking a divorce, reportedly due to his alleged cheating, word has surfaced that Freeman and his long-time spouse became separated months ago. Freeman suffered broken bones this past weekend when he and Demaris Meyer were involved in a single-car accident after Freeman lost control of his car on a Mississippi road. He’s recovering at a Memphis hospital after arm surgery, and Meyer is reportedly in good condition. The National Enquirer magazine reports that Meyer had been friends with Freeman’s wife before becoming involved with the Oscar-winner. He’s expected to be released from the hospital this week.

Beyoncé’s face appears lighter in ad. The TMZ.com celeb gossip Web site has started a buzz about singer Beyoncé by printing her photo in a new L’Oreal makeup ad. Fans and visitors to the site gave mixed reactions to TMZ’s comparison of a tannish Mrs. Shawn Carter next to L’Oreal’s much paler-skinned pic of the singer, which TMZ argued was “severely Photoshopped.” The alleged skin-lightening job in the advertisement renders Be “almost unrecognizable,” TMZ says. Some comments posted to the site, which polled whether the ad offends Blacks, express disappointment that the singer could approve it. Others suggest that Beyoncé’s naturally fair complexion may have been lighter due to seasonal change at the time of the L’Oreal photo. So far, no word from the singer’s camp about the criticism.

Entertainment News: Kanye West Hasn’t Got A #*%@ Anger Problem; Wife of Snoop Dogg Is Free To Cruise L.A.; Nelly Joins Singer Sheryl Crow on Olympics CD

July 9th, 2008

The rap super star denies rumors that he’s planning to get therapy
Kanye West

So he’s known for throwing a fit every once in a while. What grown man doesn’t? Rap star Kanye West has put to rest rumors that he has any plans of seeking anger management. The man who recently filled his blog with profanity after he was criticized for taking the stage late at a Tennessee music festival has posted the following kinder, gentler clarification on his official site: “Now the media is saying I’m going to anger management something or ‘nother. I have never had any conversations about anger management. If anything, I need anger enhancement! lol! I get off the plane in Hawaii today and the world is saying my management team said blah blah blah… Oh and a sidebar – I don’t know if everyone has realized this yet, but I don’t do interviews; if there’s anything I wanna say, I’ll say [it] right here on my own blog.”

“Boss Lady” won’t face drunken driving charges.
Maybe she was only doing her mug shot impression of a person who’d been driving drunk. A Cali court has thrown out charges against rapper Snoop Dogg’s wife Shanté Broadus, following her arrest for alleged DUI. Citing a lack of evidence – apparently including her booking photo – a judge dismissed the count against “Boss Lady,” as she’s known on Snoop’s reality series. Guess you really can’t judge a book by its cover, if “Boss Lady’s” best drunk woman pose is any indication.

Nelly joins singer Sheryl Crow on Olympics CD
Nelly

The rap world is making its contribution to the U.S. Olympics through Nelly’s contribution on a forthcoming, exclusive CD. The St. Louis rapper joins pop singer Sheryl Crow and other artists to lay tracks that will be used to help motivate athletes bound for the Games in Beijing. “I know this soundtrack is something we will all be able to enjoy while we’re in Beijing and will help motivate us to compete at our very best,” says swimmer Michael Phelps. The Olympics begin Aug. 8.

Rapper’s boo is allegedly busted driving under the influence
Snoop

The wife of rapper Snoop Dogg has been charged with driving while intoxicated in California, cops say. A spokesman wouldn’t say why Shante’ Broadus’ vehicle was initially stopped. But the 32-year-old spouse of Snoop, who’s been prominently featured on the rappers E! cable network reality show, was booked with a not-so-cute mugs hot and issued a citation. She’ll appear in court next month.
