Timothy Wright’s Son Takes Over Church

July 14th, 2009

Timothy Wright Son

The son of a prominent Brooklyn gospel great who died three months ago following a horrific auto accident has taken over his father’s historic church, saying, “I have heavy shoes to fill.” David Wright, 30, is now pastor of Grace Tabernacle Christian Center, which was led by Brooklyn’s Grammy-winning “Godfather of Gospel,” the Rev. Timothy Wright. “It’s a big responsibility but my dad has prepared me for this,” Wright said. “I was with him every day, learning from him, learning what not to do and what to do as far as the ministry. “I feel God has equipped me for this.” His 61-year-old father was killed in April, nine months after the car crash left him paralyzed and killed his wife, Betty, and 14-year-old grandson, D.J. The Rev. Timothy Wright released more than a dozen gospel albums, including 1994’s Grammy-nominated “Come Thou Almighty King.” Said the younger Wright, the former music minister who had been serving as temporary pastor since his father’s death, “I was very hesitant to do this; my hope was that [my dad] was coming back and that he would be healed. But he said. ‘You’ll be fine,’ and I put my trust in his hands. The past year has made our family and the congregation stronger and I feel if we can go through what we went through, we can go through anything.”

I am so pleased to hear this. I was like the younger Wright, wanting to see Rev. Timothy return to the pulpit; and, was very dissapointed but understand God’s decisions. So, trusting in the Lord, and moving forward in what He is ordaining, I’m believing that a new and awesome thing is being done in that Ministry. And, it is being ordained by God. It is so great to hear Rev. Wright’s son state that he was with his dad everyday being taught and learning the do’s and don’ts of the Ministry. I would love to see the results of what is being done. I’m excited just hearing about it.
