U.S. Senate Rejects Bill Seeking Justice For Lynching Victims

July 31st, 2008

Republicans said they will not support it until an energy bill has been passed

Lynching
The move to seek justice for Civil Rights Era lynching victims came to a screeching halt Monday as Republican members of the U.S. Senate said they will not support any legislation until they can get a vote on an energy bill. The Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act would give the U.S. Justice Department $10 million per year to prosecute those responsible for killing Blacks and supporters of civil rights initiatives. In addition, the bill called for $3.5 to aid local law-enforcement agencies involved in the investigations. The bill was among about three dozen pieces of legislation aimed at helping mentally ill people, homeless youths, stroke victims and child-porn prosecutors. Leading the charge against the measure was Sen. Tom Coburn, an Oklahoma Republican, who consistently fights new spending measures. He was joined by 39 colleagues. The 52 votes in favor were eight short of the number needed to force a final vote on the bill bundle. Democrats argue that the Republicans want to keep the money on hand for the war in Iraq. “History will tell whether this is a setback or a setup for ultimate victory of the Till bill,” Alvin Sykes of Kansas City, president of the Emmett Till Justice Campaign and drafter of the bill, told The Clarion Ledger newspaper in Mississippi. “Every justice-seeking American should be calling and e-mailing their U.S. senators, strongly urging the passage of the bill.” The “Till bill” is named after Emmett Till, the Black teen from Chicago who was kidnapped and brutally beaten before being shot to death by the Ku Klux Klan in Mississippi in 1955. Why do you think the bill didn’t pass?

First of all, I’m not sure how much difference this initiative would have made anyway.

The article states “Republican members of the U.S. Senate said they will not support any legislation until they can get a vote on an energy bill.”

Sounds like the bill failed simply because the Democrats would not play ball with Republicans. Republicans never said “NO”, they just wanted something in return. That is how politics has always worked. Why would this be any different? Democrats are to blame for refusing to work with Republicans. Democrats had no real intention of passing this bill. It was just a game to them.

No I am not at a lost for words I’m just amazed that liars and idiots like you are still around in 2008. Your only point is to insite racial arguments as indicated by all of your comments. As I said before, SPOKEN LIKE A TRUE IDIOT! There is already a fund for victims of crime and certainly white people are benefiting from it.

This is Funny I cant believe all you people on this site, and when i say you people i am not being racist i just mean all you uneducated black power vs. white America people. if i remember correctly Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream that one day you will be judge by the content of your character and not the color of your skin, but when ever i hear African Americans speak about there oppression and how white America this and white America that, it seems to me that they want to be treated equally and they want people to see them for who they are not the color of there skin but it is fair if they call people white racist and whitey, they cant see past the color of there own skin, and anyone else’s. IF you are black you can go around saying black power, thats ok that is pride, but if a white person went around saying white power he would be called a racist, how is that equality, thats why i say American power and Humanity power. look beyond color and race. Judge for the content of his/her character.

This is politics just like smedheat said

10million dollars to help prosecute people responsible for crimes committed 50 years ago is a waste of money and resources, you could spend a billion dollars and you would not be able to prosecute let alone find anyone responsible for these crimes against humanity. yes this was a disgusting time in out history, second only to slavery but nothing can undo what was done. The only thing holding you back in this country is yourself remember that.

America every other country hates us because we are the best. be proud to be American Vote this year but please don’t vote Obama just because he is black Vote because you believe the person can run this country and can keep us Safe.

American Power:

your statement “uneducated black power vs. white America people”

was uncalled for and ignorant on your part. you do not know who you are dealing with. Who are you to judge anyone else’s education or to lable anyone else. But in the same paragraph you have the ball to judge the very same people you accuse of judging each other. Get real or get lost!

American Power, I wil vote for Obama because he is a black man if I want to and that doesn’t make me stupid or lazy. Remember my vote counts just as much as your vote does whether you like it or not. The reason behind my vote is MY BUSINESS!

i think the bills didn’t pass because republicans dont want justice for black s. they’d rather see them die than survive and be succesful

i think the black comunity needs to stop blaming everything on white people. it was Africans that were the first slave owners they enslaved our Anciestors first. raping, killing, and hating each other. read your history books read about the slave trade and how it was started.

manny Said on

john, we don’t blame everything on white people. and you are just as bad as those who discriminate against us by making that stupid statement! Now you trying to reverse history giving those Africans more blame than they deserve. Does that justify what was done on the slave ships and for 400 years after in America.

Return you black man card at once!!!

john Said on

So the minute a black man speaks up and says we should no longer blame white peple for our problems he needs to turn in his Black man card. I did not take any blame away for what was done here in America but it was the Black man that enslaved us then And it is the Black Man mentatlity that enslaves us now. And check your facts our ancestors werent enslaved for 400 years. if that were true we would still be working the fields.. i dont know about you but i dont work for free and nobody in my family has worked as a slave in over 143 years, I have never been oppressed thanks to the brothers and sister that died for us during the Civil Rights Movement, and there were white people that acctually died for our rights 2. And by the way President Lincoln the president that ended slavery was a republican, tasha you make yourself look ignorant when you make comments like yours.

Joe Said on

Enoughisenough, that statement is one of the main reasons race relations in America are the way they are. Ignorance is one of the most dangerous tools used to justify someones actions. “Dat be racism”. R u serious?

stanley Said on

John:

I think the white community has done a pretty good job of defending themselves. They don’t need you on this site to speak up for them. And it’s wonderful that you life has been so positive and that you have never been oppressed or experienced racism BUT some of us still suffer from racism on a day to day basis. Also, nitpicking the facts of African American history does NOT remove the stain of slavery. No matter how much you would like it to that is apart of our history and does effect how we are treated now to a certain extent.

I do not understand, why do we (black’s ) keep going to the enemy for justice. If the cat got bit by the pitbull why would he go to the german sharped
for justice, knowing that he might get bitt again. This doe’s not make any since to me. The difination of insainity is repetting the same thing over and over execpting a different result.

I believe that the time has come for black people to take a huge step back and look at all the issues that have been unsolved from us black saying “we want freedom”, “enough is enough”, “its thh white mans fault”. it is not just the white mans(persons) fault but the Black mans(persons) fault and every other race in the world. we need to stop blaming other people for the problems we are facing.
Yes, some of them are other peoples fault but we are not helpign the situation in any way by the way we talk, act, confront them. If the tables were turned i could see the same thing happening with every other race.
we need to move forward, not just as one race but a one people. one team. one world.(im british so i will not say one nation.
please take into account what is being said by the younger generation as they will be living with the consequences and not most of yourselfs. (im onyl 15 years old). i hope you read and learn.
Thank You
