Veteran Actor Can’t Raise Cash For ‘L’Overture’ Biopic
August 20th, 2008Danny Glover disses Hollywood’s rejection of his historical drama.
Despite spending decades in Hollywood, Danny Glover is feeling the familiar pain of struggling, Black filmmakers who can’t find funding for their own projects. Glover, best known for his roles in the Lethal Weapon series and The Color Purple, has been working to produce a biopic based on the revolutionary Haitian general Toussaint L’Overture. Controversial Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez reportedly offered half of the film’s $36 million budget, but Glover couldn’t come up with the remainder, based on doubts from independent financiers. “Producers said, ‘It’s a nice project, a great project… Where are the White heroes?’” Glover told a recent seminar in Paris. “I couldn’t get the money here. I couldn’t get the money in Britain. I went to everybody… The first question you get is, ‘Is it a Black film?’ All of them agree: ‘It’s not going to do good in Europe, it’s not going to do good in Japan.’ Somebody has to prove that to be a lie.” L’Overture led a violent uprising against French rule in Haiti, which gave the nation its freedom from slavery in the 1700s.

Cute guy!,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, But I am just a bit curious..the magazine HOLLYWOOD GOSSIP reported his profile was found on the famous rich men dating site ___________ http://RichMatchMaking.com ___________m last week and he was seeking his sugar babe there. ………………wow.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why hasn’t Danny spoken to some of is affluent friends/colleagues regarding the funding of his project? Both Spike Lee and Mel Gibson are well known for funding controversial projects….
were are my comments
Isn’t that alot of money for an independant film, can’t he make it for a cheaper
price 36 million whew………….
No one believed in Hotel Ruwanda either, but it recieved Oscars…People need to stop trying to bury Black history. Movie makers of Black America, producers, financiers need to get together and at least review the project..
I am broke and hungry, trying to get an education and they spend millions to make a movie that will last for 2 hours or less. How about he donate some of the money to the homeless. Or the families of the men fighting for this country. Duh! What is wrong with people
I say, why?? the black actors/actress of hollywood with all the blings/things do not promote themselves on black projects as other ethnic groups do?
I say, there is enough african-americans in the u.s.a. that $1.00 apiece could fund I know some black-base movie showing the suffering/uplifting/grand life that we endure other than this drug/pimping/ dealing/prostitution rings the film-makers love projecting us to our children/world with all the negective views….. so prejudice/sterotypes of a few idiots is a reflection on us all. we ain’t that poor in america.
Us not promoting us, shows the world that inspite of our pie -in- the -sky success in america, we don’t believe in us… nor do they
we must put our foot/dollars on a positive us!!! FOR OUR CHILDREN
I hope he proves them wrong! Go Danny!
BlueHeart I am broke, hungry, & trying to get an education also.If u would research he does donate money to good causes. It good that someone wants to make use that our Black History is not lost. And to let u know the men that r fighting r doing what they sign up for. And this is coming for a veteran. Blueheart why don’t u donate some of your time to helping the homeless (voluteer I do).
and they spend millions to make a movie that will last for 2 hours or less. How about he donate some of the money to the homeless. Or the families of the men fighting for this country. Duh! What is wrong with people
NOT….” WHITE ENOUGH”..
DANNY GLOVER IS TOTALLY INVOLVED WITH UNDERPRIVILEDGED UNDERDEVELOPED POVERTY STRIKEN COUNTRIES ALONG WITH HARRY BELAFONTE… SO BEFORE YOU TALK ABOUT BEING HUNGRY AND THE MONEY HE NEEDS FOR HIS BLACK FILM PROJECT YOU NEED TO LOOK AT WHY YOU ARE HUNGRY AND WHOSE FAULT IS THAT? YOU NEED TO BE LOOKING AT ALL THE WASTEFULL SPENDING ON THIS WAR WE ARE STILL ENGAGED IN….. ANYWAY, WHY DIDNT OPRAH HELP HIM? $HE’S ALL HE NEEDS IF NO ONE ELSE BACKED HIM…..$$$$$
Making movies is a business and they do it to make money. Be real now this movie sounds like it would lose tons of paper, so I don’t blame no one for backing it.
THANK YOU WHOVER DELETED “daniel” COMMENT!
NO RACISM FROM HER TODAY!
KoolHAnd!! Its because you dont know your black history is the reason why u can say such dumbness. Not only will this movie educate blacks but the british as well (whether THEY like it or not)! I am Haitian and Toussaint
L’ Overture was a very powerful fearless black revolutionist! Who made a major movement in our slavery days! And If you didn’t know Haiti was one of the first free and independent countries in the world so get your Mind Right KoolHAnd!!!
Your comments aren’t here because they were racist danni. This is Black Entertainment Television.(BET) We wont deal with anybody who goes against that. Jessica this is not a dating site. This is a news blog
Donna, Thank you for all you just said…..I completely agree!!!
GET UP, STAND UP, BLACK FOLKS!
STAND UP FOR OUR RIGHTS / RELIGIONS / HISTORY / FUTURE / WORLD!!!
Who really supports or admires those who don’t support or admire themselves first. We cannot depend on THEM (thats obvious)!
Blueheart, you can’t be serious!
My heart sincerely goes out to all who are bad off, but to make a movie that will reach out, touch, and EDUCATE so many people across THE ENTIRE GLOBE is worth every penny spent. Giving the money away is just that…. “GIVING IT AWAY!” Utilizing our money to educate and depict our history (in its trueness not what they want us to think of ourselves) cannot be valued more. Wake up my brother/sister. Its not about the money here! Its about the entire world doubting us just as much as we doubt ourselves. Keep your head up & may GOD bless you!!

OPARAH CANT HELP EVERYBODY…………………
You are right Anna. Oprah ,can’t or should I say, she is very selective on whom she does help.
It’s a beautiful project and it is a shame that Danny can’t gather the necessary support. Hugo Chavez is supporting it, that is wonderful. The Haitian Revolution is a historic landmark for the entire world. There is alot to be learnt out a movie of that. Oprah is someone who should certainly support. Spike Lee too. Hollywood is so obsessed with making senseless movies that no one would support a movie that is intended to Educate others. This is sad. And for those claiming that the money could be spent elsewhere, this project is necessary to shed light on Black struggles.
