‘Vigilante’ Inmate Murder Probe Widens

July 3rd, 2008

FBI and Maryland officials join forces to determine how the Maryland inmate died.

ronnie_white_pgcounty_inmate.jpg

The “vigilante justice” case of a Maryland cop-killer suspect who was found strangled to death in his cell has expanded to include everybody working at the D.C.-area jail. Initially, authorities announced that seven corrections officers who had access to Ronnie White were under investigation for the 19-year-old inmate’s death. White, who was held in solitary confinement, was discovered in his cell Sunday with two broken bones in his neck; he died from asphyxiation and strangulation, according to a Maryland medical examiner. Two days prior, White had been arrested and charged in the hit-and-run death of Prince George’s County police Cpl. Richard Findley. According to police, White, who was driving a stolen truck, struck the officer, who tried to flag the vehicle down. Prince George’s County Chief Executive Jack Johnson, who described White’s death as a case of “vigilante justice,” said that the suspect’s apparent payback killing is inexcusable. “The killing of the officer is absolutely abhorrent, but also, Mr. White was presumed innocent and deserved his day in court just like any other citizens,” Johnson said. “We live in a constitutional democracy, and no one has the right to be judge and jury.” The FBI, which is working with Maryland State Police, said Tuesday that all 630 staffers at the Prince George’s County Correctional Center will be part of the investigation. Several guards have said they will not talk to investigators, according to Ramon Korionoff, a spokesman for Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Glenn Ivey. “The family of Ronnie White is absolutely, unequivocally outraged, incensed and deeply saddened that the life of their loved one could be taken so cold[ly], so callously,” attorney Bobby Henry told reporters Tuesday. “Something is dreadfully wrong with the system.”

It doesn’t matter whether there is an investigation and a trial because the police will be found NOT GUILTY. Several high profile cases have proven that police in America have a license to kill blacks (especially if they have a criminal record or are suspected of a crime). I know that UMLAW and/or his buddy Big Chocolate will be on later posting that if blacks did not commit 90% of the violent crimes in America this would not happen (or some other equally ridiculous BS). But what happened to “INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY”??

A another good example of law enforcement,DOC staff, security guards, etc taking matters into their own hands. This is a prime example why we need to have some agency or organization who is watching the folks thats watching the everyday citizen whether in jail, hospitals. Perhaps they should install video cameras in those areas.

ShanB 504 said on July 3rd, 2008

And I agree with you. We need someone to watch the so called “Top Dogs” of all these law enforcement agencies. They are to uphold the law, yet they take the law into their own hands. Here in New Orleans, a white Tulane Univ. student struck and killed an officer (I believe a retired police officer turned campus police officer), and drug the officer several feet before stopping and then decided to go home. The student later got the vehicle fixed in order to cover up the crime. Guess what? He was drunk and everything else; but he got off ( he got simple time in a boot camp facility). No one took matters into their own hands with him, so why should they have in this case.
P.S.,
A couple of years before this incident, the student’s brother committed the same horrific “accident”.

If the young man was guilty, he deserved his day in court. I am sorry for the families of the slain officer, and for this man’s family because I know they are both grieving their losses. But this is exactly the kind of behavior that cannot be tolerated in a department that is supposed to uphold the law, not be the very ones committing the crimes. They may think they are better than the criminals but in reality they ARE the criminals. They should all be sent to jail. There are seven officers involved–if the pressure is maintained, one of them will talk. It is up to the citizens to make sure that this does not fade into obscurity; those in charge would love for this to just go away in order to protect their brethren. They might talk tough, and declare that “the guilty MUST be punished” but don’t think for a minute that they aren’t looking for a loophole. It’s a good thing that the FBI is involved–hopefully they will get results quickly.

THe GOONSQUAD is what they are called over there at PG County Jail, in Upper Marlboro, MD.
My husband was a victim of them, a few years ago. They have about 6 or 7 Correctional Officers come in and just for no reason, rough these men up.
In the late 70’s they did the same thing to Terrence Johnson, as well as so many other’s. It just didn’t get to the point of the other victims dying.
You’d better bet, former inmates about to start talking NOW!!! Sad that this young Bro lost his life…..Black Men Speak Up in Regards to this INJUSTICE!!!!! and GET YOUR MONEY…..LAW SUITES

There is definitely something wrong with the criminal justice system in this country, and it’s more than just towards our people. It needs to be overhauled completely. The officer and the inmate deaths are senseless, and we do have the bill of rights that guarantee due process and the right to a jury trial of our peers, not this nonsense that used to occur during Jim Crow. But, we do not always need to think about law suits like someone suggested we do, because it’s not always about money, and what does suing someone do? Give you money to not help fight the problem. Rims, systems, and other nonsense is what will be bought, not finding a way to end this type of nonsense.

Daniel,

I agree with you 100%. I understand that BET is supposed to be pro-black, but it’s programming doesn’t provide much in the way to help our kids and whatnot, so why would you think that comments on here would reflect something different. When I heard about the case on CNN, I was like, that’s jacked up, but what about the officer that was killed also?

Criminals have way too many rights in this country, and while it is sad that the dude got killed, and it is senseless, he was suspected of a crime, and then is suspected of committing another crime trying to get away. You won’t hear or see BET go there with it, but that’s why I don’t watch the network, and pick and choose what I read from the site.

When will they talk about and help with the mortgage and credit crises that a lot of blacks are plagued with? My guess is never, because it doesn’t affect them.

I believe law enforcement agencies and correctional facilities should do a better job of screening potential employees/contractors. They should make job applicants take some type of personality and/or psychological test before hiring them. Furthermore, they definitely need to install more video cameras to watch both law enforcement/correctional officers and inmates. This is not what the United States is about. This individual deserved his day in court. When peace officers and law enforcement officers cross the line like this, they become no different than the bad people (criminals) they lock up.

Anyone who is not a FELON can get a job as a CO. And for the most part, a lot of the CO’s are former FLASH LIGHT COPS or Security Guards, so to speak, so they portrait this image as Close to Cop as they could be….you do not need a college degree to become one. Pass the physical with a few push ups and run a few miles and you are in.
But the fact remains, that we have this young man who was killed at the hands of one or a few of them. Now grant it, you have some CO’s who love their job and do not abuse it, or the inmates….BUT then in any profession, there are always a few rotten apples. No EXCUSE I know!!!
Someone has to be accountable for the death of this young man. So, County Executive JACK B. JOHNSON, who will it be? What do you have to say to the family of this young man? And Glenn Ivey, since you are the State’s Attorney, will you represent the WHITE family in this matter. Or were you, before the death of this young man going to prosecute him?????

First my condolences to the slain officer’s family and to the teenager’s family. I will not say this case is completely about race. I will say that it is first about the fellow officers being outraged that one of their own was believed to be killed by the suspect, then the fact that he was black enraged them even more. Many people do not value life. If the 19 year old did indeed hit the officer and killed him, then he had no regard for life. However, we have a “justice system” that is supposed to determine guilt, not one’s own perception. This case should be thoroughly probed based on that fact. I also believe the case of the 62 year old white male who shot two “suspected thieves” in their backs in Texas should be reinvestigated. Mr. Horn went outside to engage these men after being told by the 911 operator to stay inside. He indicated he was going to kill them, before he went outside. He can be heard on the 911 tape yelling “don’t move or I’ll shoot and immediate gunfire. His story is that they were now in his yard threatening him. Based on the time he told them not to move and then the gunfire, they had no time to be in his yard “threatning him”. Also what person in their right mind is going to approach someone holding a shot gun and they have no weapon. Furthermore, the men were shot in their backs. How many people are going to threaten you with their backs turned to you, it’s ludicrious. There was no audio other than Mr. Horn’s voice on the tape. How were they threatining him with their backs to him and not saying a word? These men were running away and Mr. Horn, being the upstanding citizen that he is, decided he was above the law and could kill if he desired!! Of course, Texas, being the “let’s consider a minority guilty first and ask question later and execute them state” let him off!! I believe the family of the men (illegle residents are not) should sue the pants off of Mr. Horn and the state of Texas. I do not condone crime, however, these men should have been given their day in court, not an execution at the hands of a man who is obviously lieing about the events of that evening. Mr. Horn knows he “got away with murder” and I hope that thought eats him up for the rest of his life.

Once again we are told that another black youth dies while in the custody of white officers.
Once again there is “a full investigation” being done.
Once again the corner’s office concluded he was choked to death.
Once again whites are “shocked” and blacks are “outraged.
Once again black leaders will demand answers.
Once again white authorities will give them some.
Once again the white news organizations will interview “angry” blacks.
Once again whites will say “they need to wait for the conclusion of the findings.”
Once again blacks will wait.
Once again the findings will confirm what was suspected…He was murdered by white police officers.
Once again they will be found not guilty of murder and found guilty of involuntary manslaughter.
Once again they will be sentenced to probation or very little jail time
Once again blacks will cry “unfair.”
Once again blacks will be left angry and frustrated.
Once again Lil Wayne or Usher will put out new CDs.
Once again blacks will fill the clubs to get their groove on.
Once again blacks will forget about the murder.
Until it happens ONCE AGAIN!

This case is messed up on so many levels, but one thing needs to be pointed out, the officer was not in uniform, so it wasn’t like the fact he was an officer was apparent (not that anyone should be intentionally hit and dragged)…I knew when I saw the story that this young man would never see the courtroom, so it was no suprise to hear what the so-called law did to him…actually, I was suprised they acted so fast, I thought at least a few weeks. It is not about black or white (though we know how justice works for “just us”) it is more about law enforcement murdering a man in their custody and then attempting to cover it up; it makes the good officers look terrible, and they should be outraged.

TJ said on July 3rd, 2008

Another example of the “law” being well above and beyond the law. No matter how deep the investigation goes cops are worse than any gansters when it comes to a code of silence. They’ve probably already designated who will take any kind of fall to be taken by one of their own! If for only one month precincts could be secretly bugged and the audio released on YOUTUBE and several other internet mediums (the networks would be stopped way before any substantial amount of footage gets out) what would be revealed would completely boggle the minds of “forever” niave public listeners! The level of corruption, complicitness and overall corrosion of our American justice system. This was nothing more than a classic example of an eye for an eye people. Remember that, its no more complicated than that….All the other talk is just superficial rhetoric providing good 6 o’clock sound bytes!

Until we as a nation of people take a stand against the handwritings of the rich slaveowners that set the stage and design against a particular human race, we need to quit acting out on particular and handpicked cases such as this. It’s on the table the people have voted for those that represent “justus” and until we revise the beginnng of the generation of destruction to the blacks we are crying in vain. The legislation from state to state should be on one page of humane treatment, but only in a perfect world, right? I don’t see how White’s family could say they can’t see how he was so coldly killed. He coldly killed someone else. Regardless of race, creed, or religion what goes around comes around. How do they think that officer’s family felt. At least White’s family can probably have a viewing of his body which is more than the other family can say!

I AM SURE OTHER IMATES HEARD SOMETHING, UNLESS THEY HANDCUFF HIM AND BLOCK HIS MOUTH FROM SCREAMING. I KNOW HE WAS IN solitary confinement, BUT THOSE OTHER IMATES SHOULD HHAVE HEARD SOMETHING.WE ALL KNOW THERE IS A CODE OF SILENCE.

Just another example of injustice that continue’s for Black American’s. America needs to clean up it’s own back yard before it keeps going to WAR trying to clean up other Nation’s problem’s.

i think its messed up the way both the cop and Mr. White died, but mostly how Mr. White was killed. That is not how this country handels the crime and who ever killed him desurve to be locked up. Show the how we really handel crime in this country…

Can’t overlook that an officer of law was killed here. I want say it’s right that the young inmate was murdered. There was wrong doing on both sides. I think the only way to see some mercy in this entire situation……I would have to put myself in both situations and both sides of this coin. These officers are being killed.. and all some of you can think of is RACISM …are you sure it was Racism. Would you say there was any RACISM on the young inmates part…what would you call it. Do you have any sympathy for the officers family….they thought that man was coming home after a hards days /nights work…but he didn’t …he was killed by this young man. I know the young mans family is going through much pain. We have to see more than RACISM in this case…there is hurt all around…we are even hurt by it.

I first like to extend my condolences to the slain officer’s family as well as friends and much prayers and wishes extends to all. I like to believe that even though mr. white was charge in the crime he still deserves the right for a fair hearing and a trail and not be judge comdeemed and executed by a system that can only be decribed as a vigilante and should be brought to justice and stand accountable for their actions.

Ms Lady said on July 5th, 2008

I send my condolences to both families and may God give them strength while they are going through their struggles.

As for RM, Femaleblackcop, and DrCool. God knows all and sees all you can’t possibly think its ok for the killing in a solitary cell is good and if you do then whoa unto your children because you just ok’d the devil to have their way with yours. Sometimes we need to stop and think about what we say because it is 08 and God is exposing all that is not right and by your comments you lead me to believe you would have done the same things so may be you have done something unjust yourselves and I pray that God exposes you too. I am not a resident of MD but I have experienced your legal system and it was a joke my family member died as a result of your nonsense in a hospital there and the police did everything but investigate. So my prayers are that God exposes everything and everybody and guys suicide is not an option for you Judgment will be from GOD Who can do everything except fail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

denisha said on July 5th, 2008

this is crazy even if this young man is guilty the system has a responsibility to take care of the citizens in the communities and when they get in their care they are to be treated as humans no matter what the offense is so that just lets the officials know what goes in these jails and something seriously needs to be done about this and not just talking about this incident its plenty more injustice activities going on in the system they might not be as bad as this one but is being done

How would you feel if someone said that about one of your family members? Let’s start thinking about some of the stupid things we say before we put it in print they say people don’t know how ignorant you are until you open your mouth so just smile!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you think that’s punishment enough? HELL NO! F%ck’em. Now his family no what it feels like. He won’t be able to commit a hit & run ever again

Once again, our system has failed alot of people. My prayors goes out to both families, cause it’s not a good feeling when you loose a love one. It’s not right on both hands, but people have to realize that the system says we are innocent until proven guilty. No one has the right to take anyones life. Now in doing that, the people that did will be brought to justiced!! People that leaves negetive comments.Watch what you say, because you could be faced with a life or death moment. BET, keep doing what you do. My opinon, your not only telling the news of the blacks, but the whites too.

I recently post a comment to abcnews.com and I think my post was removed. I’m honored to re-post my thoughts about this access crime. The bible teaches us that the vengence belong to God!!!! America we are in trouble people aren’t respecting life. Laws were created to protect human error how many people have been released from jail because they were wrongfully accussed proven incident after serving manys jails in jail? They are released and society tells them I’m sorry we will give you currency for your time lost. What happens to a person killed from deathrow then later it’s discovered this person was incident? Can’t say sorry!!! The killing of this young man is every mother’s nightmare. Young men get catch up in wrong path and it’s god job to get them in the correct path impose suffering until them. God have mercy on the souls that took any life. Angry Mom

What happen to serve and protect? it’s so many corrupted police officers in the world no matter where you are and frankly, that’s ashamed. I remember when little boys wanted to become a cop. Now days they are scared to call for help. Personally, I think the police are jealous on how ppl are out here getting money to survive for their families. Everytime something happen the first thing they say is “that they don’t make enuff money to go thru want they are goin thru, but it shouldn’t be about the money when you chose a job like that. They should be passionate about their jobs like everybody else. They need to get over their personal issues and make the streets more safe and not worry about the little things like someone throwing a water bottle on the ground(talking bout the white officers) and look for bigger crimes.

ebony said on July 7th, 2008

I think whenever they finds out who killed that man should get life or the chair. Because it it was a citizen went out and killed someone for killing their love one they will be locked up for 50 years to life and it shouldn’t matter rather they were police officers or not it was still wrong.

There is a SERIOUS problem with america today. anytime you have a r.kelly INNOCENT??, whites committing crimes and getting off easy??, a MR. NFL JAILED for dog fitting, and lastly the police hired to protect and serve that are found INNOCENT?? Why is it that the police are above the law, they should get what they desrve just like any other broke TYRONE would get.

Every inmate, from the drunk child waiting to be released in to the custody of his parents to the condemned who is about to be executed (by the judicial system) has the right to protection while in custody.

WHY WON’T THE COURTS INSIST ON LOOKING AT THE VIDEO FEED. THE CAMERA’S SHOULD BE ON 24/7 AND NEVER REMOVED FROM THE PREMISES. THE DEATHS ARE BECOMING REDUNDANT. IF IT WERE WHITE PEOPLE BEING SLAIN IN THIS MANOR IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUS ARRESTS.

nycnnc62 said on July 8th, 2008

Is it possible the camera’s were not on for some reason? If they were in use there would be no reason to figure out what exactly happen in that cell. I’m sure the tapes had not mysteriously disappeared! The DOC has to make sure all thier ducks are in a row on this one. some one has to be thrown out to the wolves, they just need to see who and if need be how many!!

i tell it’s carzy out here and in jail as a young was killed i say dat;s carzy but i think if sum cops dont want to talk they got somthing to hide and they should be put out on da spot. it’s sad that the cops is taken over. like what happend in ny with BELL it’s cazy and sad at the same time. if cops can shot at somebody over 50 times it’s sad how they can do that and get away with it they can go home knowin that they killed sombody and can go to sleep at night but let sombody do that in da the st. and they cant get away they would have life in jail…..
