‘Vigilante’ Inmate Murder Probe Widens

July 3rd, 2008

FBI and Maryland officials join forces to determine how the Maryland inmate died.

The “vigilante justice” case of a Maryland cop-killer suspect who was found strangled to death in his cell has expanded to include everybody working at the D.C.-area jail. Initially, authorities announced that seven corrections officers who had access to Ronnie White were under investigation for the 19-year-old inmate’s death. White, who was held in solitary confinement, was discovered in his cell Sunday with two broken bones in his neck; he died from asphyxiation and strangulation, according to a Maryland medical examiner. Two days prior, White had been arrested and charged in the hit-and-run death of Prince George’s County police Cpl. Richard Findley. According to police, White, who was driving a stolen truck, struck the officer, who tried to flag the vehicle down. Prince George’s County Chief Executive Jack Johnson, who described White’s death as a case of “vigilante justice,” said that the suspect’s apparent payback killing is inexcusable. “The killing of the officer is absolutely abhorrent, but also, Mr. White was presumed innocent and deserved his day in court just like any other citizens,” Johnson said. “We live in a constitutional democracy, and no one has the right to be judge and jury.” The FBI, which is working with Maryland State Police, said Tuesday that all 630 staffers at the Prince George’s County Correctional Center will be part of the investigation. Several guards have said they will not talk to investigators, according to Ramon Korionoff, a spokesman for Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Glenn Ivey. “The family of Ronnie White is absolutely, unequivocally outraged, incensed and deeply saddened that the life of their loved one could be taken so cold[ly], so callously,” attorney Bobby Henry told reporters Tuesday. “Something is dreadfully wrong with the system.”

SHANB 504…if the most u can give on a story is just a vague version of it, then no point in telling it. i can make up a story exactly like u’r and change the races and call it the truth.

i will say this now so that every1 knows…i don’t believe that what was done to this young man was justified AT ALL!!!!

but how is this young mans family and i quote “absolutely, unequivocally outraged, incensed and deeply saddened that the life of their loved one could be taken so cold[ly], so callously”….what about the family of the officer this man ran down for doing HIS JOB??? how come no apology was made to the family of that man by white’s family?? and how come BET doesn’t have a story on the officer killed giving detail about him and his life.

oh that’s right…i 4got…if u ain’t black, u don’t count.

I wonder what happens to dirty cops and correction officers who go to jail for murder? I guess we’ll never know because that never happens!!! In America if your a white cop and you kill a black man, the NOT GUILTY verdict is waiting for you. Go ahead and plan your vacation while the victim’s family plans a funeral.

There is definitely something wrong with the criminal justice system in this country, and it’s more than just towards our people. It needs to be overhauled completely. The officer and the inmate deaths are senseless, and we do have the bill of rights that guarantee due process and the right to a jury trial of our peers, not this nonsense that used to occur during Jim Crow. But, we do not always need to think about law suits like someone suggested we do, because it’s not always about money, and what does suing someone do? Give you money to not help fight the problem. Rims, systems, and other nonsense is what will be bought, not finding a way to end this type of nonsense.

were are my comments???

Daniel,

I agree with you 100%. I understand that BET is supposed to be pro-black, but it’s programming doesn’t provide much in the way to help our kids and whatnot, so why would you think that comments on here would reflect something different. When I heard about the case on CNN, I was like, that’s jacked up, but what about the officer that was killed also?

Criminals have way too many rights in this country, and while it is sad that the dude got killed, and it is senseless, he was suspected of a crime, and then is suspected of committing another crime trying to get away. You won’t hear or see BET go there with it, but that’s why I don’t watch the network, and pick and choose what I read from the site.

When will they talk about and help with the mortgage and credit crises that a lot of blacks are plagued with? My guess is never, because it doesn’t affect them.

When thoose officers go to jail I hope the immates take real good care of them.

THIS IS NOT THE FIRST CRIME COMMITTED IN PRISON/JAIL AND IT WILL NOT BE THE LAST .PEOPLE FORGET ABOUT THOSE ARE INCARCERATED WHO WATCHES THE WATCHER?

I believe law enforcement agencies and correctional facilities should do a better job of screening potential employees/contractors. They should make job applicants take some type of personality and/or psychological test before hiring them. Furthermore, they definitely need to install more video cameras to watch both law enforcement/correctional officers and inmates. This is not what the United States is about. This individual deserved his day in court. When peace officers and law enforcement officers cross the line like this, they become no different than the bad people (criminals) they lock up.

Who’s surpised. Maryland ain’t no joke. This ain’t the first time something like this has happened in Baltimore and surrounding counties out there. Maryland is a very racist state. I once lived there. Never again.

Anyone who is not a FELON can get a job as a CO. And for the most part, a lot of the CO’s are former FLASH LIGHT COPS or Security Guards, so to speak, so they portrait this image as Close to Cop as they could be….you do not need a college degree to become one. Pass the physical with a few push ups and run a few miles and you are in.
But the fact remains, that we have this young man who was killed at the hands of one or a few of them. Now grant it, you have some CO’s who love their job and do not abuse it, or the inmates….BUT then in any profession, there are always a few rotten apples. No EXCUSE I know!!!
Someone has to be accountable for the death of this young man. So, County Executive JACK B. JOHNSON, who will it be? What do you have to say to the family of this young man? And Glenn Ivey, since you are the State’s Attorney, will you represent the WHITE family in this matter. Or were you, before the death of this young man going to prosecute him?????

REGINA. I do not know your experience or where you lived in MD. But I have been here all of my life and never run into racism. PG County JAIL, has a majority of BLACK Staff as well as imates, it is not racist.

mz.H Please. You must don’t see much. Come On. You know it’s there. Baltimore.

Mz. H Said on

Regina with all do respect. I am not an individual who gives or even like to receive email friction……But this is PG County, not Baltimore. PG County is more of an middle class working environment. Now you have your THUGS everywhere, I know. But I have never experienced Racism here. I have to disagree with you on this.
Have a good 4th of July weekend!
