Voting Rights Act is Challenged
January 12th, 2009Do we still need laws ensuring fair election practices now that an African American has been elected to the nation’s highest political position? That’s now a question for the U.S. Supreme Court, which in April will entertain a challenge to the landmark Voting Rights Act of 1965. A Texas utility district contends that the law – which ensures that African Americans and other groups are no longer hindered from voting by such obstacles as poll taxes and literacy exams – was rendered unnecessary when Barack Obama was elected. Congress reauthorized the Voting Rights Act in 2006, and President Bush signed it into law. So, what’s the problem? Read more here.

I just want ted to say that I love to read the phrase ‘African-American’, becuase, to me, that doesn’t mean black, white, latin, oriental, [insert whatever]; to me it represents a ‘people’ as one; American.
last night my black lover stuffed a cabage up my butt!! Tonight will will try a watermellon!!
Its all good and well that Barack Obama got elected, but, let’s not get CRAZY!
It took a confluence of many factors, some negative and some positive, to get the first African-American president elected. It does not, in any way, remedy or alleviate the presence of racism in this country. People, Black and White are getting all carried away and saying that there “are no more
excuses to be made” and that laws and regulatory statutes that were put into place in the last 50 years can now be unraveled and dismissed.
First of all, there weren’t any “excuses” being made. Inherent and ingrained racism still is very much alive. Police killing of Black men is still going on, just because they are Black. The recent police shootings and murders in Louisianna, Texas and Oakland attest to this. Many racist whites are really upset now that Obama has been elected. Blacks were not the only one who thought that they would never see the day that there would be a Black president, and, the poetic justice of it, after they tried in everyway to strip Blacks of their African names and ways, is that this Black president has a totally African name. The worst thing that Black people can do is to get too comfortable and complacent with the results of this recent election. Racist whites are still on the job. They just have had a little fear put in them as they see all of these supposedly rock solid financial institutions crumbling before their eyes, and, the very same negative attributes that they have tried to attach to Blacks for years, now apply to themselves. The stereotypical garbage spewed forth by racists is now dumped at their doors in the form of economic struggle and financial loss that they never imagined. They have even more reason now to wallow in their racism and blame Blacks. They are trying to blame Blacks who just wanted to own homes, like everyone else, for the mortgage crisis. Not so fast! The greed and arrogance of the white man has just come back to bite him right in his a$$, and the cretins almost took down the global economy with them.
Black people better be more vigilant than ever, not less. don’t get complacent or comfortable or think that our “ship has arrived”. The Voting Rights Act better be kept just like it is or even better improved, not discharged or deleted. There is still a large element in this country that would like to see us all as slaves again.
Next we are going to hear that we don’t need Affirmative Action Laws. This is another way of trying to take away people of color rights so to ensure that Obama will be the first and only African American President of the USA. I can’t wait to see how the Supreme Court Justices will vote on this issue. I hope our leaders will be vocal and ensure that our voting rights are protected.
Hub-Ba ..Hub-Ba..-Hub-Ba..I think I need a enema!! I got to much in me!!
Yes we do still need these laws on the books. Some people are NOT going to do the right thing unless there is a law on the books. Contrary to popular believe….WE HAVE NOT OVERCOME YET!!!
Seschris you are 100% correct if they take that law out the books we
will see America sent back 60 years.
I will try to stop the halfs of my brain from fighting!! one half is white and the other is black . The white half is a redneck with big red pimples and craves big beffy black men, the black half likes chicken and ribs with white women.
When will “ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL” be applied to all blacks. When will equality lose the judgment of one’s color. ‘WE THE PEOPLE” INCLUDES ALL MANKIND without string attach. I will never get tire until we all are seen as free. Freedom should ring out loud and “we” the black people should be outraged and do everything to see this “ACT” be no more. We the Black People pay taxes, own homes, educate our children, love our families especially those who paved the path for our freedom…. when shall we all truly be free to vote without strings. God Bless America inspite of the color of one’s skin. Let Freedom Ring.
B.E.T!!! if you let that imposter use my name again I will strike a pose and vogue!!. And I will not let my black love have his way for week cudos!! that means when thanksgiving comes we allways stuff me instead of the turkey!! and we use plenty of butter and oil oh!! he makes me feel like I want to bust!!
BTW Sakonya, Obama is not the first half black to be elected. Lincoln was, documented.. don’t believe everything you see on CNN
Yes, A friend also said that on tall dating site http://Tallmingle.com ,which is a dating site for all tall friends and tall singles, especially models and basketball players.
Ofcourse the voting rights act is still needed.just because Obama has been elected does not mean racism has been eradicated. The two main reasons Obama was elected are the war and the economy which the republicans mishandle. There will be acts of racism when it comes to voting rights therefore the act is needed.
Well hell yea i’m complaining white people took and took and took from us, what the hell we suppose to do so i say hell yeah i’ll complain until i get my 40 ACRES AND MY MULE< so the white people gon have more to talk about because i don’t know about the rest of yall AA’s but they ole me.
This is very interesting…because during Bush’s administration I felt strongly that it should be removed. BECAUSE WE ARE BORN in AMERICA and should have equal and all rights to everything in this country! Now, that President-elect Barack will take over my view is the opposite…now I think it should remain as law..because it can and will hurt us in the long run…BUT there should be some revisions, especially the title…
I am glad at least it’s brought up as an issue…
My message to all of those dumb, naive, blindly loyal to racist amerikkka, negroes(need to grow) is that if you all still believe that white people’s constitution & bill of rights applies to you, then you all are truely DUMB!!! If Black People or African Americans were truly citizens of this racist country, then the so-called Voting Rights Act would not have to be voted on by white politicians in congress every so often, it would be LAW or PERMENANT!!!! Just because Barack Obama(Black Man) was elected the presidency of this racist country, does not mean that racism has ended in amerikkka. The reason why most white people in amerikkka voted for President Barack Obama is 1. He is the best qualified & with the best economic agenda for this country, & 2. the racist republican or reptile party under george(example of white affirmative action)bush screwed up the economy of this country. Hence, in the minds of most white amerikkkans, john(old decrepted racist)mccain & sarah(pretty but dumb as ever)palin would be a continuation of racist george(example of white affirmative action)bush’s FAILED ECONOMIC POLICIES THAT HAVE SENT THIS COUNTRY INTO A RECESSION & DAMN NEAR DEPRESSION. Bottom line, negroes(need to grow) need to WAKE UP, & remember & realize that while white people’s racist ancestors were writing the declaration of independence, constitution & bill of rights, our African Ancestors were enslaved by them, picking cotton, & praying to GOD ALMIGHTY FOR FREEDOM. F@CK RACIST AMERIKKKA, & to those negro(need to grow)dummies who still naively believe in this racist country, & that they are equal citizens with whites, I say to you all WAKE THE F@CK UP DUMBASSES!!!!
WELL DUH KIRK C ODEMS!!!!!!
