Wal-Mart Employee Loses Life in Black Friday Stampede

November 29th, 2008

Jdimaytai Damour

The 34-year-old employee who was killed when customers flooded through the doors of the Black Friday opening of a Walmart in Long Island has been identified as Jdimaytai Damour.  He was a temporary maintenance worker who took a job to make some extra cash for the holiday season. His family has hired a lawyer, setting the stage for a possible lawsuit. Angry relatives of Jdimytai Damour, a graduate of Long Island’s Freemont High School, were waiting for autopsy results Saturday as police reviewed security tapes to identify shoppers who took part in the stampede. Meanwhile, Wal-Mart has defended the precautions it took on the busiest shopping day of the year, but Long Island cops said the retailer didn’t have enough security on hand. Danielle Damour, the victim’s sister, said the family was seeking legal advice and had not made funeral plans for her brother, a temporary maintenance worker. “We’ve got a lawyer already,” Danielle Damour, 41, said. “They haven’t released the body because they want to do the autopsy.” Damour was knocked over and trampled as shoppers literally walked over him to access the store faster. While only one fatality was recorded, a pregnant women had to be hospitalized after being knocked to the floor and three other persons suffered minor injuries. Shoppers were still coming in as emergency workers were trying to save the man’s life. “He was bum-rushed by 200 people,” said Jimmy Overby, 43, a co-worker. “They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me.”

Shayla T look at the picture again the picture tells the store ( they were black people’s ) but don’t tell anyone that is not politically correct.

My sincere sympathies to the family. I hope the security cameras will help the police to identify these heartless people who stampeded him. God help them for their lack of humanity. I hope they can’t sleep at night.

Greed…………the root of all evil

This is ridiculous!!!! I understand that it would be hard to file a lawsuit direclty at one of the shoppers who trampled him because it was more than one who did it, but there is no reason why Wal Mart cannot be sued. On a day like black friday the amount of security on staff should be drasticly increased. Had there been more security on staff, this foolishness would not have happened. The sad thing is that all of this happened over a few measly dollars.

Yo I work @ another walmart further in long island and I didn’t have this people @ my store but that was expected @ this walmart the people who shop there are very ghetto(not just black people) and rude and I hope they shut the store down that shows they have no control and care for people lives in that area yeah valley stream is part of long island but its still part of the hood and hood people do hood things so of course walmart gonna find a way of this and not have to pay come on its a superpower in the world right now think about it we need to stop walmart from goin any further and this is just another example why

That makes me so sick. It makes no sense for people to be that anxious for anything. An innocent man now is gone behind a sale………….. Straight ridiculous!

So sad! Black Friday needs to cease. It has gotten way out of hand. Christmas is not about that. America has gotten way too greedy. I truly believe this is why our economy is in turmoil. I’m not usually an advocate for litigation suits, but I sure hope the Damour family sues Wal-Mart. The store created a dangerous environment for shoppers and employees, therefore causing Mr. Damour’s death. Wal-Mart wants people to act like animals to get the few “deals” they provide all for the sake of a profit margin. I am not saying that the shoppers don’t share blame – they do. But I feel that if these stores wouldn’t create this hostile climate, then people wouldn’t get hurt.

This is a total disgrace. Black Friday is eventually going to be done with. People have gotten ridiculous about the whole Christmas thing anyway. Christmas is not about how many gifts you can give. And furthermore, this could’ve happened anywhere, so Dave you need to go sit in a corner and read up on some statistics or something.

First, I would like to send my prayers out to the faimly of Jdimaytai Damour. People in this world today just don’t care. People are losing their lives everyday for nothing. For him to be killed our something so little could have been avoided. They should have recognized that someone was hurt, but no don’t nobody care anymore. The people who did it needs to be brought to justice because I know they seen him and the other on people on the floor. Yet no one tried to help, it’s a shame what the people in our world has become today.

I was absolutely shocked at this news. This man lost his life because of some people wanting to get a dollar or two discount. Like you don’t feel it when you step on a body? 200 people walked over this man..I just cannot believe they did this! My prayers go out to the family!

What a TRAGEDY! What A SHAME! This was truly a BLACK FRIDAY! A Working Man lost his life because of GREEDY people. I pray for everyone of you who killed this man. May God have mercy upon you & yours. You know the difference of stepping on a floor & stepping on a body. Shame on everyone who caused this man’s death. Yes Wal-Mart has a part in this too. You say that you are Christian. So with all of the money that the Wal-Mart family has, done the Christian thing & restore a portion of what this family has lost. Take care of his funeral arrangements. Set up a scholarship in his name for his family. Wal-Mart, You should have been better prepared. To the family, my prayers are with you. May God comfort you & give you the power to forgive all of those people who did this to your family.

wal-mart should be sued and pay the family of mr damour an enormous amount of money. 20 million isn’t even enough but it might offer the grieving family a chance to change their life after such a tragedy. wal-mart should have a place in each pay check for the associates to donate the money right from the check instead of hand collecting the money which most people don’t trust. wal mart should have been ready to handle the collection of such a large group of unruly people on black friday because they are sure ready to collect their money at the register. this matter can not be let go with some humane actions
