The death toll in the Dominican Republic climbed to over 80 on Wednesday as mudslides and floods from Tropical Storm Noel swallowed whole neighborhoods. The U.S. National Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm watch for parts of southeast Florida as the storm shifted away from Cuba’s northern coast and threatened the Bahamas. As rains continued to deluge the region, rescue workers fought to help areas of the island of Hispaniola that were isolated by flooding. Once they arrived, they found 56 dead in the Dominican Republic, 24 dead in Haiti and one dead in Jamaica, according to news reports.
Smugglers used voodoo to force Nigerian girls into foreign prostitution
Twenty people were arrested in New York and across Europe, charged with smuggling young girls out of Nigeria to work as prostitutes after scaring them with voodoo, according to Dutch prosecutors. Thirteen of those arrested were nabbed in the Netherlands. After netting the alleged smugglers there, Dutch authorities notified law enforcement officials in New York, Madrid, Spain, Antwerp, Belgium and the central British city of Coventry and arrested five Nigerian suspects. A sixth Nigerian was arrested last week in Dublin, Ireland. According to prosecutors, the suspects had been smuggling underage Nigerian girls into the Netherlands for years using fake travel documents before shipping them to other parts of Europe to work as prostitutes. “The people smugglers gave the victims false travel papers, airline tickets and instructions on how to apply for asylum at (Amsterdam’s) Schiphol Airport,” the statement said. “The youngsters were also under pressure by voodoo. In Nigeria, they were forced to swear an oath to a voodoo priest to pay back a so-called debt. This had to be done with the proceeds of prostitution.”
