World News: Zimbabwe’s New $200,000 Bill Is Worth About 13 U.S. Dollars.
August 1st, 2007Inflation has ballooned to near 5,000 percent in the southern African nation
The staggering southern African nation of Zimbabwe is about to begin circulating a new $200,000 bill – just enough to buy two pounds of sugar. Inflation in Zimbabwe is near 5,000 percent, and there are shortages of virtually everything, from bread to blankets. Speaking of bread, it now costs 50 times more than it did last year. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe, which wrested power from British rule in 1980, under the leadership of President Robert Mugabe, has formed a commission to look into the nation’s skyrocketing costs. International critics have blamed Mugabe’s policies, triggered by his seizure of White-owned farms for redistribution to Black farmers.
