Senators Sleep Over in Capitol
Will Their Effort Force Pres. Bush to Change Course in Iraq?

Posted July 17, 2007 - Democratic Senate and House members are going to burn the midnight oil and hold an outdoor vigil like those held in the 1970’s in protest of the war in Vietnam.

Tuesday night the chamber will remain open as members of the senate filibuster on a bill that would shift the role of the U.S. military to counter terrorism and training of Iraqi troops. But that won’t be all – the Upper Senate Park will also host war veterans, military families and anyone else who wanting to join the call for a new plan of action in Iraq.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) wants to force Senate Republicans to allow an up-or-down vote on the Levin-Reed Amendment to the Defense Authorization bill, with language that will also reduce U.S. troops in combat.
Reid laid the ground work for tonight’s events from the Senate floor, saying “The American people deserve an up-or-down – yes or no – vote on this amendment. A ‘no’ vote on Levin-Reed would be a vote to ‘stay the course’ – to continue the President’s failed strategy indefinitely. A ‘yes’ vote would finally bind the President to responsibly reduce combat operations and return our focus to the real and growing threats we face.”
Senators are signing up to make floor speeches throughout the night. Sen. Barack Obama didn’t do too bad; he’s scheduled to hit the floor Wednesday morning at 6:00 a.m. - just in time for the morning news shows.

As usual, more meaningless symbolic actions on the part of the party that claimed when they came to power they woudl do oh so much and have done nothing. All this is pointless, because knowing the spineless dems, some will NOT vote to have the reduction in troops they are trying to suddenly do now. They have shown nothing so far and I expect this to do nothing as well. They’ve had numerous chances to show and prove and this is the best they can do? Come up with a “plan” than evokes memories of aht 1970’s style vietnam sleepover/protest. As usual, living in the past.
sometimes, one must do what is necessary to achieve the goal, and kudos to those who did what was needed to get the point across. Bring those troops back home.
So let me get this right mil,you can’t see that that more or less those on capital hill (democrat senators along with some republicans)actually proved a point??? seriously now.. the elections are right around the corner you cant see that? that was a political ploy to get votes in 08′ come on people they ALL agreed to give the soldiers till sept what month is this again??? , keep in mind the democratic congress decided not to give the soldiers what they need equipment and armour wise, by doing so in their supposed all nighter. Now how does NOT giving the troops what they need in a WAR ZONE mind you help save their lives?????And I’m sorry but WOW they stayed up all night poor them …the soilders sleep in ditches I should Know!!! soldiers follow orders and do what 90 percent of the population won’t, as a volunteer my self along with so many others. while you all express your disgust with the president how about those democrats who in their own interest of being elected, and I am no republican but any reasonable person can see that they handycap our boys by their facade of an all nighter give me a break!!!!by the way I am not a fan of conflict , but I have taken an oath to protect all that is this country, I dont want an award for that!!!! it is my honor!!!
Much respect blackrepublican ,again the do-nothing congress proves as you say over and over again a symbolic show is more than enough to keep minorities believing “they represent us” please!!! you are right friend, please help me out with the uninformed ones….
No, this was NOT a political stunt. There are democrats that have been vocal about this war from the start and had withdrawal plans on the table. Progress is better than nothing.
BTW: The republicans are the ones that are spineless.
Right???? the same democrats who voted to send them to war more than four years ago along with republicans, you dont remember that???? I agree that republicans are not what we need but the democrats consistently whine when they themselves voted to go to war , before you comment please read what is being said go to c-span check it out, the democrats are a joke so but dont think for a moment that the dems actually know whats right please, at least you know where the republicans stand, with the democrats they waver with the wind and show up and make noise at every minority get together, and it just so happens to be right before election time and you cant see that???? what year is this anyway 07′ right! when is the election 08′ right!check out c-span or just bone up on constitutional law the president needs the votes from congress to go to war. Hello Alma welcome to actual fact not emotional spill.
Your fact is distortion. EOM
Expound maybe??? or more of the same… read different sources of opposing arguments then form a rebutal that at least refutes some one else’s argument or point of dialog . I believe I am being clear with my sence of understanding. because i pay attention to what is going on not conspiracy theoreticals, remember theories even in science have to be proven. and in actuality paying attention to what goes on not forming oppinions popularized by the MEDIA or any political party thats is how it works, you listen with both ears to ALL then form an opinion , and I am not clear that is what you did no hard feelings though ,I’d rather dialog than leave one liners and think a point is well taken.
