Black Lawmakers Pick’s
Black lawmakers in Congress represent 40 million African Americans, do you think their support will help a candidate win?
Posted July 19, 2007 – As presidential candidates work to earn support from the American people, they’ll first look to their colleagues in Congress. So far, the Democratic presidential hopefuls have been able to garner the support in their home state but few others.
Take a look at whom the Black members of Congress have publicly endorsed among the three top contenders for the nomination.
Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) has an impressive list of members of the Congressional Black Caucus backing him:
Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill.)
Rep. Jesse Jackson (D-Ill.)
Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.)
Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.)
Rep. Elijah Cummings (D- Md.)
Rep. Artur Davis (D- Ala.)
Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.)
Rep. Al Green (D- Texas)
Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.)
Like Obama in Illinois, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) swept her state for the Congressional Black Caucus endorsements:
Rep. Yvette Clark (D-N.Y.)
Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.)
Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.)
Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.)
Rep. Alcee Hasting (D-Fla.)
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas)
Rep. Kendrick Meek (D-Fla.)
Rep. Stephanie Tubbs-Jones (D-Ohio)
Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) list is the shortest with only three confirmed supporters:
Rep. G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.)
Rep. Mel Watt (D-N.C.)
Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D- Texas)
So far half of the CBC have not signed on with a presidential candidate. Gov. Bill Richardson (D- N.M.), Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), Sen. Joe Biden (D-Conn.) do have members of congress offering home state support only Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) and former Sen. Mike Gravel (D-Alaska) have no congressional endorsements.
But it’s still early.

Though the list may be “impressive” that in no way guarantees Obama’s chance at election much less Hilary and edwards has no chance in hell, yes it is still very early but call me cynical but the democrats still wont win the presidency.Sorry anyone can endorse anyone what does that guarantee??? And being from chicago myself I have been to the areas that bobby rush, jesse jr.represent it doesnt look as if they have done anything for those communities so does their endorsement actually hold any salt??? just a name on the list if you do nothing with your office.
Illegal immigration is the biggest issue facing most Americans today, however the Black Caucus turns a blind eye and a deaf ear. Do we really need the Black Caucus? In the last major election, I was handed a pamphlet on how to vote on each amendment. I had already done my research and knew how I was going to vote. To my dismay, they wanted Black voters to vote the opposite way i.e. yes to teens being able to get an abortion w/out a parent’s consent. Black voters can think for themselves, research each presidential candidate and make a decision regardless of who “The Black Caucus” endorses. thank god goldeneagle1!!!, you are a god send. i have been blogging this site for about two months and in that time i have only run across two different individuals that are informed on the issues. and apparently researching on these issues beyond cnn and fox news. though news sources, not nearly enough those sources have proven to be.but dont expect people to see what you mean, and as you say it seems that the black community falls in line when these out of date organizations speak up so to say. call me a cynic though, i see no change in the near future ,i’m 30 and have been around ,and i have found it is easier to blame than take responsibility for you own destiny. something that is engrained in our society and i shutter to say the black community has it bad ,need proof chicago ,the west side, looks just as it did after the riots when king was shot….now explain to me why when you burn down your neighborhood it is everyone elses responsiblity to clean it up .
