Police Policy Not Always Fair and Balanced
July 30th, 2007Read and respond.
Posted July 30, 2007 – The need for attitude adjustments from members entering the U.S. Capitol apparently isn’t confined to race, gender or political party. But it seems that the punishment for those who step out of line is.
Rep. Chris Shays (R-Conn.) Remember all of the hullabaloo surrounding then-Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-Ga.), when she and a Capitol Police officer got into a tussle in March 2006. Compare that to the whisper about the recent confrontation between and a Capitol Hill officer. Earlier this month, the Connecticut Republican pummeled an officer
with a profanity-laced tirade when the officer refused to speak into a lost constituent’s cell phone to help unite the congressman, who was on the line, with a party that was wandering around in the rain. (Officers aren’t allowed to use cell phones while on duty.) After Shays arrived at the Capitol entrance in a driving rainstorm, he reportedly grabbed the officer by his badge and let him have it, WestportNow.com reported.
Although the officer filed no charges, according to The Greenwich Time, he did lodge a non-criminal “courtesy complaint,” which is a cordial resolution of the matter. “When he returns, we’ll arrange a meeting between him and the congressman if the officer wants it,” Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, a spokeswoman for Capitol Police told the Time.
Mighty polite, compared to the McKinney fiasco.
McKinney, who entered through the same door on most days, believed she was racially profiled by the Capitol Hill officer who denied her when she wasn’t wearing her congressional ID pin. After a heated exchange, she pushed the police officer with her cell phone in her hand and entered the building.
Before long, the chief of the U.S. Capitol Police was on national television talking about the severity of her actions in the workplace of their duty. McKinney spent days describing what happened defending her actions to her attorneys, her colleagues, and members of the press. She faced possible criminal charges and censure from her own party.
Ultimately, McKinney apologized to the Capitol Hill Police, but even that wasn’t enough for the chief who said that dismissing charges “would be sending the message to the public that it’s OK to hit a police officer, and its not.” By the time the dust settled, McKinney was on the outside of the Capitol looking in. She had lost her seat for the second time.
Last week, Chief of Police Phillip D. Morse, Sr., and assistant chief of police Dan Nichols said they met with Shays and the congressman acknowledged he acted inappropriately and would take full responsibility for his behavior. “The congressman stated his full support and admiration for the officers of the U.S. Capitol Police and offered his apologies,” CQ.com reported.
But Jim Himes, the Greenwich Democratic Town Committee chairman, who’s challenging Shays seat next year, said, “Police officers deserve our admiration and our respect, and I think it’s embarrassing to Chris Shays and his constituents that he chose to verbally assault a police officer.”
But, like the press and the Capitol Police, Himes says it doesn’t compare to what McKinney did:
“I think there’s important differences,” Himes told the Greenwich Time regarding the two incidents.
I think there are important differences too. Shays and McKinney are a different race, gender and party.

Shays should be punished for his actions, not let go.
come on now i remember when mckinney hit that cop along with what insued. she is lucky she wasnt jailed ,that is normally what happens when assault occurs.and comparing the two incidents only proves once more that we cant see the occurance only the difference in color.so race, gender and party are the differences huh??? how about her assault, stupidity and unlady like behaviour. but we wont see that we only see a white guy and a black woman. i wonder why???? either incident should be looked at with seriousness not race colored glasses.i was recently pulled over here in sw florida and i had left my illinois license at home and you know what i didnt give the officer attitude because i didnt have what was required to drive legally and you know what i also didnt ask if i was being pulled over because i am black either, get this in florida you go to jail if that occurs. i didnt , because i was honest and respectful . i didnt even get a ticket .so it goes to show when you percieve every issue involving law enforcement of any kind as racially charged then you have already lost the battle.by the way i was doing 60 in a 45 mph zone so there was reason to pull me over. it is called taking resonsibility for you own actions !and not concerning yourself with how some one else is treated when you yourself are in the wrong.seriously how about a topic that doesnt include race .how about a topic that is beyond this petty nonsense .she was wrong and so is he. what does it matter how each one is punished if i remember correctly her behaviour got her kicked out as she deserved!! and his though assault against a police officer wasnt included in his behaviour he should be punished too as i am sure he will be, and if he isnt how does that put race relations back fifty years??? we concern ourselves with nonsence ,and protect our own when we are wrong .wrong is wrong ,some may say they do it as well, i say so what YOU do the right thing !! and concern yourself not with others .
So, let me get this right, the black congresswomen hit the capitol policeman with her cellphone, push on by him and cussed him out. Now the white congressman grab the policeman by his badge and cussed him out and brandon does not see race played a part in how they are punish. Please, give me a break. She was punish big time for being a blackwomen who dare touch and cuss out a white policeman for stopping her from comming inside capitol hill without her badge which she has been using that very same door everyday which these policemen has seen her use day in and day out. Now comes a white congressman who goes off by grabbing the badge of said police man and cussing said policeman out because said police would not speak into his cellphone to help some people who were lost from getting to capitol hill and brandon says she unlady like. Huh, what was the white congressman acting like? This smells of race big time. The capitol police did not try to put that white congress man behind bars nor did they put press on said congressman to apologized for what he did. Look it was race with a message. Negro woman you don’t put your hands or cuss out a white policeman, period. it’s about race, pure and simple.
i guess you didnt get what i meant even after in plain english i explained it . but who cares. think as you will . yes he should be dealt with and i believe i said that and you didnt see that, oh well ,but um.. she ASSAULTED A COP!! and trust me i am no fan of cops but there is a difference and that being ASSAULT!!!! but think as you will thinking on those terms will always work out for you race, race, race. do you think on any other terms ? how about the differences in the incident ?? yes he should be repremanded to!!! any reasonable thinker would acknowledge that .hey.. but i stated that initially but all most see is what they disagree with not the whole of the remark.mlrobins41 i get you because i read your thought in its whole not what i didnt like.
I would have filed charges on him just to show him that he don’t own people, and he’s not god, like they always do. They think others are beneath them but a lesson is to be learned here.
