Lessons Learned from Katrina?
October 25th, 2007By Pamela Gentry, Senior Political Reporter
How much do you think has changed since Hurricans Katrina and Rita?
Posted Oct. 24, 2007 – For four days now, wildfires have raced through Southern California, burning up everything in their path from Los Angeles to San Diego. So far, San Diego County officials estimate, the angry blazes have caused more than $1 billion in damage, forcing thousands to flee their homes and find shelter elsewhere.
The devastation, sense of helplessness and overall social trauma bring to mind another recent example of Mother Nature’s wrath: Hurricane Katrina.
But there are some noticeable differences this time around.
For example, unlike in August and September of 2005, the federal government was well prepared for the worse. On Tuesday – one day after the flames moved into residential areas – President Bush held a cabinet meeting to coordinate and maximize federal relief efforts. By Tuesday afternoon, he had dispatched his disaster relief chief, Homeland Security Director Michael Chertoff, to the West Coast to oversee operations, and he immediately declared a state of emergency in California.
This morning, Bush left Washington to see firsthand the destruction on the ground.
“Americans all across this land care deeply about them. We’re concerned about their safety. We’re concerned about their property,” the president said, stressing the urgency of the crisis.
Contrast that to two years ago.
Bush was in Washington relying on hurricane updates from Chertoff and Michael Brown, the director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It took him five days before he actually arrived in devastated Gulf region to witness the devastation for himself.
When Bush got word that the levees were breached, he was in the midst of a photo-op with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for his birthday in Ariz., and later that day he flew to California, to deliver a speech on Medicare.
Two days after floodwaters engulfed the Gulf Coast – which of course was two days late – the National Guard finally arrived. That was the same day FEMA Director Michael Brown said he learned that people were trapped at the New Orleans Super Dome.
That was also the same day that Bush checked out the destruction from the window of Air Force One, as he was returning home from the West Coast.
Things have changed, and the folks in California are first to put the feds to the test.
The wildfires have burned about 410,000 acres; the damage is staggering by all accounts.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Congress would consider sending more aid to her home state.
“So far, [state officials] have been able to avail themselves of whatever is available from the federal government. We may have to expand on that as the fires continue to rage,” she said from the House floor.
Today the president will visit a San Diego neighborhood, hold a news conference and have lunch with first responders during a five-hour visit.
Lessons learned from Katrina, I think so.
If Katrina were to happen today, would the federal response be different? I think so; the embarrassment shamed the administration into doing better, and it paid off for the folks in California.
What do you think?

i think as an black american that is really messed up how the goverment does the black community every where around the world. i think the naacp and other black groups should step up and speak out about the situation on both sides’ because i don’t think that this is right for them to do thing so slow.wish it will change quick..ps a positive black man with kids..
southern cal wildfires vs nola flooding is an unfair comparsion at best…
but the world witnessed the difference…
it exactly what nobel prize winner dr watson was referring to…
the victims of nola flooding were by-in-large…
very ‘low iq’ usa black ‘redneck living’ n!ggers who were too f@ckin’ stupid to get out of the way of those billion of gallons of water…
where-as the victims of the so cal wildfires…
were ‘normal to high’ iq middle/upper/professional income citizens of various ethnicity…
who got the he11 out of dodge when ordered to do so!!!
he11 the people in that san diego football stadium looked like they were at a tailgating party!
those people in nola after katrina looked like a bunch of worthless, triffling low-life black n!ggers!
i would hope that by now after experiencing such catastrophies they would shape up right now and instead of doggin our president we need to be praying for him. Can you imagine the type of responsibilty this man has on his shoulders trying to run a country? Cut him a little slack because even with all the nasty comments he’s still running the country right now.
It really saddens my heart to hear or read of a human being referring to other human beings as
“a bunch of worthless, triffling, low-life black n-Words!” Be It Known; “Your Judgement Day Shall Come!” Lessons were learned from Katrina. The tragedy is that so many people have not learned the lessons of the HOLY BIBLE! By the way, the word is “trifling” NOT “triffling”.

I believe that there was a lesson learned in the Katrina tragedy.
A hurricane sweeping over land and levees being breached is a diaster, not saying that the fires are different, but in a way, it is because getting to the victims in a hurricane and water coming on land has to be totally thought out for the welfare of the people that were directly affected and also for the emergency response personnel.
As for the fires, planes can fly, and some of the roads were available. And you can use water or a flame retardant to put the flames out, where as neither would stop the hurricane, nor the water for that matter, so…
I feel for the people that have been and still are affected by Katrina and I pray that the Federal government will do their part and compensate all that had losses and for those who what to return home, help them get back to their roots.
God bless America!
First of all to stupid as hell blues, get a life grey hater,ok, boy! Now to the issue at hand, we must remember that the fires in Socal where a lot of people lost their homes. The group of those people were high inconme to high middle income whites were as in nola the group of people were low to poor income blacks, that’s why the feds were on the spot in Socali a day after than the five days after in nola. It just shows that bush and his admin did not care about the people in nola and the gulf coast, period. There were too many black people for their taste.
i challenge dirty blues to post his real name and address on here. then, we’ll see how many worthless n!ggers show up at his door and kick the f#ck out of him.
katrina was a disaster. the government failed EVERYONE who didn’t make it out of there.
