Sen. Barack Obama By Pamela Gentry, Senior Political Producer

Posted Dec. 24, 2007 – Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) continues to battle negative hits from Clinton supporters that end with an apology.   This time it was former Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey who “accidentally” mentioned Obama’s middle name, Hussein, at a time when there are false rumors floating around that the Illinois Democrat is really a stealth Muslim candidate whose intent is to bring down the U.S. government.

Two of Sen. Hillary Clinton’s campaign volunteers in Iowa were fired for circulating an email that implied the same negative vibe against Obama, who’s considered Clinton’s top competition. Kerrey’s slip of the tongue occurred during his endorsement of Clinton last Sunday. He now says he’s “sorry for the insult.”

”I answered a question about your qualifications to be president in a way that has been interpreted as a backhanded insult of you. I assure you I meant to do just the opposite,” Kerrey wrote.  Adding, that was not his intent.

What’s not clear is why Clinton’s folks have so much to say about her rival.  If these political allies would stick to script and chat up Clinton, all of this could be avoided.

Still, the weekend ended on a high note for Obama.  The Dallas Morning News endorsed Obama for the Democratic nomination, saying, “Mr. Obama is our choice because of his consistently solid judgment, poise under pressure and ability to campaign effectively without resorting to the divisive politics of the past.”

One of the largest and influential newspapers in Texas, the News issued its endorsement without ignoring race altogether.  While giving a nod to the Democratic candidate it believed would “inspire a refreshingly new approach,” the paper wrote that “race is not an overriding factor for us. But it is undeniable that America has failed to heal its racial wounds, including here in Dallas. We need a motivated leader capable of confronting the problem, and no candidate is better equipped than Mr. Obama. His message isn’t about anger and retribution. It’s about moving forward.”

In the opinion article titled “We Recommend,”  the paper endorsed former Gov. Mike Huckabee, (R-Ark.) to win the Republican nomination. “Mr. Huckabee is not an ideal candidate … His religious conservatism, particularly his past rhetoric on women and gays, can be alarming,” the paper said. “But religious conservatives aren’t easily pigeonholed …. Mr. Huckabee has a stout heart for working families and the poor.”

The paper also said it was not in complete agreement with Obama on all issues, but wrote, “We recognize his potential to unite disparate political factions and restore cooperation between the White House and Capitol Hill.”

Obama, campaigning in Iowa Sunday, told folks, “If we’re serious about winning this election, then we can’t live in fear of losing it.”

I am voting for Hillary because she is the qualified candidate. I am also voting for Hillary because she is a woman and I am a woman. Although I wish that she were a black woman. I want to see a black man (or woman) be our nations prez for a change too but Barak Obama isn’t the one. Barak Obama is a muslim name. I’m not comfortable with that as a native american-african american nor as a christian. Although I do like the fact that his wife is a black woman-and deep toned at that! I don’t mean to sound shallow about the things that I see with these two candidates, but let’s be honest, a lot of people are looking at the same things. I am also concerned that Hillary might consent to same-sex marriages, which I am also against. But although my voting for her would be helping another white get in the oval office Hillary is the best qualified candidate for the job. I feel that a woman like her is just what this country needs to get back on course. Lord knows the men sure have messed things up-except for former prez Jimmy Carter.

keke said on December 24th, 2007

I am christian a devot one but so far obama has my vote. he has also said he is a devot christian. Now just because he has a muslim name does not mean anything because hillary says she stands for christianity but she really doesnt. who has told the truth in all of this obama who has found it that they would use name calling to win hillary so I say would you vote for someone when all they do is name calling are would you vote for a person that stands up against it all.

MY VOTE GOES TO OBAMA!!!!!!!!!

SARENA! SARENA

look at your statement in part of your blog you say I feel that a woman like her is just what this country needs to get back on course. Lord knows the men sure have messed things up-except for former prez Jimmy Carter. LIKE HER HUSBAND
if she is elected he will be in charge putting his no good two cense in WE always say Bill was the first black pres and if thats how we want to be know as having our first black pres than we need help. And the first chance we get to have our dreams come true us as black people fight against it. We always try to find the wrong in our people instead of seeing the evil in the white man.

Barry said on December 24th, 2007

I will be voting for Obama, I think that the fact that he’s a black man has very little to do with my vote. He’s the candidate that has shown class and intergrity through out. His people have not stooped to name calling or tried to garner support by instilling fear bassed on his religion. I’m disappointed that the Clinton camp would do this.

dyan said on December 24th, 2007

We have the chance to elect our first REAL! black president, and I’m not talking about the Clinton’s. Here we go judging, when some of us let Bush in office and look what he did nothing!! .My votes are for Obama all day. He didnt have to call anybody out just to make himself be on top. Now dont get me wrong I would like to see a female president get elected for the first time but i can not pass up Obama.

Sameer said on December 24th, 2007

I am a young african american man from Iowa and I know that Barack Obama is not a muslim, but evem if he was, he speaks the truth and common sense and that is all that matters to me! I am not going to judge my vote on religion, but i will judge my vote if I feel that canidate speaks for what I believe in. America needs to wake up and smell the fresh air because we are a diverse country and for you all as minorities to say that you guys are not up for change in the White House should be ashamed of yourselves! Barack Obama knows what the world is like outside the United States’ eyes because he has lived in all parts of the world! I am confident that he knows what he is talking about! Obama has my vote FOR SURE!!

DiamondStar said on December 24th, 2007

What does Obama’s name got to do with his qualifications as a president? You select your candidate of choice based on leadership and qualifications, not on the name that’s listed on his birth certificate. This will be a very tough election, because both Hillary and Obama are very well qualified, which means there should be NO EXCUSE about voting on each state designated primary days.

My vote is for Obama.

Bevie said on December 24th, 2007

Serena, more black men went to prison under Bill Clinton than any other president, but we still love him so much..Hillary’s camp have said so many negative remarks about Obama but think they can continue to do their underhanded crap and we are to think she has our best interest…I don’t think so. Obama is the future. One thing for sure, he sure can’t *#~~$ up any more than Bush and we certainly don’t have to worry about him screwing in the Oval Office. Learn to support your own people. We are the only ones who would vote for someone else because we feel they are better for us. Slave mentality! So many whites have gave him their support. Give the man a chance…Lord knows we have given the white man more chances than he deserved and we still are second rate citizens to him. Just look at the Katrina Victims. Believe in your own people, we might surprise you.

Nik said on December 24th, 2007

Basing your vote on religion is how Bush got elected. We need to stop being one-issue voters and vote for the person that has our best interest in mind. Hillary is great, but as an educator, I have to go with Barack based on the detailed plans for education listed on his website.

Markeis said on December 25th, 2007

WOW! all the comments about a mans name and race. I believe it is time for a change. In the end we will have both of these great candidates in office. If one doesn’t win the Democratic nomination, they will be picked up as choice to run for Vice-President. Mr. Obama is the only one saying that he will have both republicans and democrats on his staff. The best choice is to go with Mr. Obama, only because he truly believes in his campaign slogans.

Emanuel said on December 25th, 2007

right now i am in the middle for who to vote for. But there is a bigger problem that they both we face. Both of there camp’s has cross the line with the dirty tactics. ANd it is so far gone that which ever one makes it to the face off will not win without the others support. Look at the last election. Kerry beat out Al Gore, but gore never came out a gave John Kerry his support and all his faithful supports never showed up in the final election. So bush won eazy. I seriously hope i am wrong about this happen again. But how many of yall will say if the other person win you will still vote in the final election cause it did not happen last time. And thats where the Democratic party will fall again. LETS ALL PREY I AM WRONG, BUT HISTORY HAS A WAY OF REPEATING ITSELF.

Bobby J. said on December 25th, 2007

Everyone has there opinion. My thing is we take chances with white people every time we vote for one of them, why, why, why as a black race, we don’t have the decensy to vote and support our kind. Whites, Spanish, Italians, all races support each other through thick and thin, but Blacks, its a shame that were scared to see one of us get ahead and then in the end, we’re always complaining about being treated unfairly. Something at the end of the day we have to blame partially on ourselves. We may not know a lot about Obama, but how much do we actually know about Hillary, and the other candidates. We only know what they tell us. If we know anything else it’s because we know them personally but at the end, who are we to Judge.

Obama gets my vote, Good Luck to both but Obama gets my vote. A Black Man attempting to make a change for us as a people. I can see him putting more of an effort to make a change than someone that’s not of our race.

You guys think about it and make a difference and or stop complaining.

Gwynne said on December 25th, 2007

What Hillary and Bill Clinton are doing in this campaign through Bob and others is wrong, down right evil.

African Americans should not be supporting Bill and Hillary Clinton, no matter what.

They have polarized this campaign every which way they can. They are on the borderline of dividing the race between Blacks and Whites.

Every time, they come out with their stereotypical comments about Barack Obama, who are they talking about?

Don’t be naive and think for one minute this will not come down to this.

And the closer it gets to these primaries; you are going to see their true colors.

What every African American should be doing is listening carefully to what Bill Clinton is saying.

What he is saying is what Hillary is saying to him. They are so afraid that Barack Obama an African American man can win, that they will even join up with either John Edwards or Bill Richardson to defeat Barack Obama.

But you want to know something; we better start listening to those drumbeats.

African Americans had better start listening to the drumbeats. Listen to the drumbeats of our forefathers and remember what we have had to endure and still have to endure.

This election is more serious then we are willing to admit.

Don’t be fooled by Bill and Hillary Clinton. These “codes” and the messengers of these “codes” are a reflection of who they really are.

And every African American has to listen carefully
and ask ourselves, what are they really willing to do for us to get our vote?

It is really time for real change.

All I’m saying is that it is okay for a Muslim to say or do anything to gain trust and it not be considered a lie because its for their religious “good”. Do your research, A good book about Muslim beliefs is a book by Rod Parsley. I don’t know whether Obama is a Muslim himself or not but it sounds like that was the intention of his parents that named him. I do know alot of muslims in Africa like my co worker. They have to pray alot during the day. I need more evidence like a recent burial of a close relative, did they bury them quickly and facing the east or west, I forget, past pictures of him at a mosque, etc and I’m not voting for him, sorry. A muslim in the white house could mean a rise in Holy Jihad look around, muslims ae taking their strategic places especially in healthcare(alot of doctors are Muslim). We have to pray and ask God to reveal the truth for our sake on all the candidates.

ABDALLAH ISSAH said on December 25th, 2007

You made a refrence about a book by someone who is not a muslem, white people can just tell a lie and you will believ him but if a black tell it like it is you call him a liar.Mr BUSH lied to us about Sadam and his weapons but you believed him but he is a xristian,so wake up and try to read the muslem holly book for a research instead of reading from a book whose writter have a bad spots for islam and muslems.

E.RHYMES said on December 25th, 2007

For those of you out there judging Obama for supposedly being a Muslim, I say to you: “Look out OUR past.” Our people have been tricked, raped, and abused by so-called Christians since we were brought over to America. WE built this nation, who better to lead it than US? We are not heathens and we will continue to promote positive change not just in America, but the world. Barack Obama, Muslim or not, is a man for the people. He is a very eloquent speaker and he is educated to the highest degree, literally. I dont think Hilary is what we need right now. The Clintons had their chance. Barack is classic. He’s just a great person, has a great family, and is a true leader. He also graduated top of his class from law school. Who better to judge injustice for us than someone who’s lived it, and has studied it? Black people in America are being beat down socially and economically every day. Who can provide hope for the souls and broken hearts of men other than the usual sold behind the counter at the local bodega? VOTE FOR OBAMA!!!

fabooj said on December 25th, 2007

What a shame…it seems that because of his name there are people here who assume it’s Muslim. Open a book. Talk to people who are different from you. There are many Arabs/Middle Easterners who are Christian and Jewish. Apparently, if a guy is name Malik al-Hamzah, he’s Muslim (in reality, my man Malik is a Jew). My friend Hussien Makhdi is a Christian.

Here’s my suggestion: If you’re ignorant of reality, do us all a favor and just don’t vote. I’d rather have a few informed people voting, than the ignorant masses evidenced in the comment sections of blogs. What kind of simpleton bases a vote on a name?

The thing that kills me most about all of this, is that we Black people, those of us descended from slaves were brought here from Muslim countries. The slave owners just beat the Muslim out of us and forced Christianity on us. Go into just about any Black Baptist or Methodist church and you’ll find ingrained traditions that have roots in Islam. But listening to Black people who refuse to actually gain some knowledge, you’d think that Islam was something “those people” do. And no, the Nation doesn’t count.

SERENA you are exactly what this CLINTON surrogates are looking for. i dont understand how you make such mistake repeatedly and call it a slip-of-tongue. HELLO. My comment is directed specifically to “SARENA! SARENA!”. If your blog is any TRUE indication of what you really feel or more important, how you REALLY think. . . then, you are in more trouble than you could ever possibly realize. In fact, I can’t even begin to fathom that you are an actual member of the black community. If you are against Barack Obama because you disagree with his political views, that’s one thing and you are perfectly entitled to your “securely founded” opinion. If that IS in fact the case, then instead of closing off the possibility of resolving your issue against him, you should take the time to probe your own understanding as to WHY you disagree with him. You owe him that. You owe YOURSELF that. You may surprise yourself and find that you agree with him more than you know. However, if you disagree with him simply because he has a Muslim name, then you are as shallow as you sound attempting to convince people that you’re not. What’s the first thing out of a liar’s mouth, “I ain’t lyin’.” You sound like a very young woman who hasn’t given her very limited political perspective much thought. Quit listening to your girls and think for yourself. In fact, I’ll stop trying to sound nice. You’re an ASS. Grow UP!!!

I’m voting for the best candidate, not for their race, religion, name,or sex. America needs to move forward,we need new leadership. America has been on The DOWNSIDE side for years. Losing jobs to foreign countries, recieving imports from other countries, instead of manufacturing HERE. The candidates need to stick to the facts and stop all the negative campaigning. We have to many homeless people AND people with no health care, people who can’t afford to buy clothes for their children. and Social Security on the brink of failure. NO I DON’T CARE WHAT HIS MIDDLE NAME IS, OR WHAT RACE SHE IS. I’M VOTING FOR THE ONE WHO’S WILLING TO MAKE A CHANGE IN STATUS QUO. LETS GET RID OF THE OLD AND BRING IN THE NEW. IT’S TIME FOR AMERICA TO MOVE ON. BRING THE SOLDIERS HOME. GET US OUT OF THIS WAR, SPEND THOSE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS YOU’RE SPENDING ON THE WAR AND BUILD NEW SCHOOLS FOR OUR CHILDREN. FIX OUR HIGHWAYS,CLEAN UP OUR CITY STREETS. BRING BIG BUSINESS BACK TO AMERICA. GET OUR GAS PRICES DOWN. TEAR DOWN THE VACANT HOUSES, BUILD NEW HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS. REBUILD AMERICA. HELP YOUR OWN COUNTRY FIRST BEFORE YOUR TRY TO HELP OTHERs. GIVE OUR CHILDREN A FUTURE.

Our problem is a fact that we as a race don,t stick together in supporting one another. Some say they will kill him ,but they can only do that,if is God will, but if it is not God will, he will live as the first black president of the Uinted State.

DLRICH - NY said on December 27th, 2007

As a blackman with young children and neices and nephews it is my fear that we as African Americans still do not realize that if there is no positive change from the status quo, we nor our chldren may not have a future. Think billions of dollars spent on a war, based on a lie, where the rich get richer and the poor die and there is no end in site. Our infrastructures continuing to fail, our social security system almost bankrupt, and our young black men and woman accounting for more than 50% of the jail population. Family values in our community have declined. For the past 16 years we have had either a Bush or a Clinton in the White House. We must change NOW as a society, starting at home with our families and then moving on to our elected officials. Remember if your house is NOT in order, how can you demand change on a higher level. I will support Barack, however I MUST hold him accountable if he is not doing his job.

ITS TRUE THAT SHE SUPPORTED SOME SOCIAL ISSUES CONCERNING THE WELFARE OF OUR CHILDREN SINCE SHE WAS FIRST LADY. OTHERWISE SHE DUMBFOUNDED OR HAS PIGGYBACKED ON MOST OF THE OTHER ISSUES SUCH AS FORIEGN POLICY, NAT’L HEALTHCARE, ECONOMY DEALING WITH THE LOW INCOME,THE MID EAST SITUATION AND CLOBAL WARMING. BARACK OBAMA BECAME A ELECTED PUBLIC STATE SENATOR FROM ILL. IN 2000. IN 2004 HE WAS ELECTED AS THE U.S. SENATOR FROM ILL.AND HAS GAINED THE RESPECT AND ADMIRATION OF EVERYONE HE HAS COME IN CONTACT . NOW, HOW DOES HILLIARY CLINTON HAS SO MUCH MORE EXPERIENCE THAN OBAMA WHEN THEY WERE ELECTED PUBLIC OFFICIALS IN THE SAME YEAR? SOME ONE PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME|

The Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I believe that MLK through the miracle of film, will educate the world before this coming holiday celebration on how to make peace in our world, and our future like never before - the world and all human beings will be influenced to start a movement to achieve global peace in the international community in our lifetime for generations to come. MLK will be proud in his spirit and his spirit will bring us together. He understood that peace is possible. When you look at the old black and white footage from that time in history, before there was the rainbow of color we see now… you will be so moved, the world will understand. Look it up on the Internet. You will see one of the greatest events in world history that will give us an example of how to move forward, starting today. Though MLK was not running for president at the time… THE PRESIDENT at the time in our history signed the paper… and gave MLK the pen - TOGETHER making the dream a reality.

God is amazing!

Amen.
