Kennedys Crown A New Leader for Change

Posted Jan. 28, 2008 – In an auditorium packed with frenzied supporters, the Dean of the Democratic Party, Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) threw his support behind the candidate he said represents the hope of America’s future, likening Sen. Barack Obama to his brothers John and Bobby, who “inspired and challenged” a new generation of leaders.
“I feel change in the air.” proclaimed Kennedy, one of the most influential politicians in America. “I believe there is one candidate with leadership at this moment and the moment is now for Barack Obama.”
Kennedy, flanked by his son Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.), and his niece, Caroline Kennedy, the only surviving child of President John F. Kennedy, said that Obama is the “candidate that inspires our country and inspires our hope.”
That message clearly reached 22-year-old Ariana Hodes, 22, a student at American University. “I’m a huge fan. I agree with what he said [Kennedy]. He has the sprit to inspire our generation, because he asked us to get involved, he’s the first to reach out to us,” she told me.
Yvonne Partezky, 58, from Potomac, Md., came to see Obama up close and personal, because she just decided to switch her support from Clinton to Obama after the “race” controversy in South Carolina. “[Clinton] shot herself in the foot with that stuff, “she told me after the rally.
Partezky who’s African-American, said she could see similarities in the Kennedy-Obama comparisons. “I thought he was great, and it reminded me of the ’60s,” she recalled.
Kennedy’s speech was laden with clarification of Obama’s record, which he said had been distorted by Bill and Hillary Clinton, and the relatively young candidate’s readiness to be president, comments designed to counter the Clintons’ assertions that Hillary was the only candidate “ready to be president on day one.”
Lauren Schultz, 24, came to the rally with her husband, Jeremy, to check Obama out, and was impressed with what she saw. “It really made me realize he can bring us all together, and he has the ability to do that,” she said. “Sometimes experience kills your spirit.”
Monday’s announcement by the Massachusetts senator apparently had been in the works for some time, but the timing may have been influenced by the recent endorsement by his niece in Sunday’s New York Times, and the recent focus on Obama’s race.
The Clintons had hoped Kennedy would stay neutral and worked feverishly to put the breaks on Monday’s endorsement. A barrage of phone calls took place, including one reportedly “heated” exchange between Kennedy and former President Clinton.
During the jam-packed rally at the Bender Arena at American University, Kennedy praised Obama for a new style of leadership, “He will be a president who refuses to be trapped in the patterns of the past,” Kennedy said. “He is a leader who sees the world clearly without being cynical. He is a fighter who cares passionately about the causes he believes in, without demonizing those who hold a different view.”
This endorsement isn’t just a photo-op. Obama’s campaign might benefit in upcoming Super Tuesday races where unions and Latino voters will be weighing in. Kennedy’s dedication to these constituents runs deep because of his passionate work on labor immigration issues.
Obama told the crowd, “The dream has never died …. It lives on in those Americans, young and old, rich and poor, Black and White, Latino and Asian and Native American, gay and straight, who are tired of a politics that divides us and want to recapture the sense of common purpose that we had when John Kennedy was president of the United States of America.”
Now Obama want’s his chance to do the same.
He has more people excited than ever before. HE IS THE ONE. As afican americans we have fought for our freedom. We were taped, threatened, jailed and killed for the rights we have now. Why are we the only race that will not uplift each other, support each other or commit to each other. If he was hispanic or asian, the whole population would join together and work their tails off. South Carolina showed us that we too can come together for one common goal.
I am still trying to determined who appointed Hillary Clinton the next Democratic nominee. Did she think that because her name is Clinton, that she would have a cake walk to the Democratic Nomination? Elections are about the American public picking the best candidate, not the old establishment of the Democratic Party. If they had their way, she would be given the nomination today. This is not the Clinton’s personal party. If your conviction and loyalty to the party is that weak, then we didn’t need you to begin with. We should have one mission, put a candidate in the White House that will end this war and bring prestige and hope back to this country. That candidate needs to be a Democrat, be it Obama, Clinton, or Edwards.

Change for Blacks means maybe we will not be judged so harshly in job interviews…maybe our kids won’t be judged so harshly in school…maybe they can go to college…for all of us, black, white etc…we will understand each other better…imagine that.

I was looking at comments from Black people on other websites and was astonished at what I was reading. Many expressed the opinion that they weren’t going to vote for Senator Obama because they didn’t believe he could win. Well my goodness, how can he with logic like that! Barack Obama is a truly viable candidate for president (who just happens to be Black): intelligent, a smart and quick thinker who has the ability to inspire and unite people and pull together a productive and experienced presidential administration. Ted Kennedy said that he “marvels and [Obama’s] grit and grace. This is man who, while he may have a skeleton or two in the closet (who doesn’t?), he is unlike Bill and Hillary Clinton who have an entire cemetery. Has everyone forgotten that the Clintons are one of, if not THE most, scandal-ridden political couple of our time? The two of them can lie smoothly without breaking any trace of a sweat. Remember Whitewater and Monica Lewinsky? Butter wouldn’t melt in either of their mouths. Bill Clinton turned the White House into a drive-thru motel while HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS were being slaughtered in Rwanda, Africa. How can we trust what they’re saying now? I admire their prowess; they can wriggle their way out of criminal charges, and they did some good during Bill’s presidency, but Hillary goes on and on about health care — excuse me, but she was in charge of health care when Bill was in office — why didn’t they fix it then? I’m not going to vote to put a couple of schisters back in charge of the U.S.
Right now, she’s campaigning in Florida - something that ALL of the candidates agreed NOT to do (Hillary included) way back when it was decided that their delegates wouldn’t be counted as punishment for moving up their primary date. Now she’s pushing to have Florida counted (as well as Michigan) because she thinks she’ll need the delegates to boost her count against Senator Obama. YOU CAN’T TRUST THEM!

Obama thinking: “If it’s right, it works!”
Think about it, everyone! Stop staring at the Clinton light and really look at the facts around you. The Clinton campaign is adjusting their tactics now because the offensive attack on Barack Obama wasn’t working. They weren’t so concerned about offending Black people when they were doing though, were they? If it had worked, they’d still be doing it.
Good for Obama!!! I watched the edorsement on tv and i have to say I felt really good. I really do feel as if a change is coming(in a good way)with Obama. I have to say that while i think Hillary is capable of leading I feel that she is to divisive as well as a factor that will unite the republicans. I also as I’ve stressed before that I didn’t care much for tha Clintons with the racial tactics they used to belittle Obama. I hope the edorsement from the Kennedy’s help lift Obama up.

I thought he was for change? why is he (Obama) accepting anything from a kennedy? he is a career politician who is ruining this country. Obama is falling into a trap. Stay away from the crooked politicians.
Kev, its a good strategic move. Its a strong symbol for the change in the Democratic Hierachy and Kennedy is a Super Delegate. Super Delegates are the ones that carry a lot of weight in ultimate delegate count. They can vote in any way, despite how their particulary state votes. Thats what Hillary is bagging on. Also that whats giving her the national lead at the time. However,with Kennedy leaning towards Obama, watch for his influence to swing more of the Super Delegates Obama way. That in the end, really elects the Presidents in the Electorial College.
I think this is truly where the scriptures takes place. “Judge ye NOT”! We should all be praying that GODS WILL be done. Through politicians we have found that they all make promises that may or maynot be kept. I like both Hillary and Barack, not basing anything on color, gender or fear. I feel if they both are for the good of the people, they should be able to work together for the betterment of our Country. I pray that GOD will be the victor in this race.. meaning that whomever is chosen, will seek GODS WILL.
